A sweet book used in our home education curriculum to introduce art (as our reading and phonics program is developed around art) and build vocabulary. I love the latter aspect of it when I think of children using well chosen words. Of course, my girls are drawn in by the small puppy and when we read this book I can anticipate with great accuracy that we will read it several more times in the day.
This story behind a girl and a dog in the painting "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair" by Mary Cassatt tells of a growing friendship between a girl and an artist. Joan Sweeney's watercolor illustrations stand delightfully on their own as great art. Because the book's strength lies in the story, though, and it doesn't add much knowledge in art history or thoughtfulness about works of art, I would recommend it for children as a supplemental read to other more substantial books about Cassatt.
05/11: How sweet! This book tells the story behind Mary Cassatt's painting "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair." It also highlights Nipper, Cassatt's famed "smallest Pekinese in the world." In the book he looks more like a Cairn terrier to me.
