The Wheel on the School is a cute book about 6 classmates who try to do something impossible; bring storks to their town. My niece and her family read this book together. During the same time her doll's hat was lost. (I have to claim some responsibility since it was my daughter that lost the hat). She worried about the hat for this was not just any doll this was her absolute favorite doll. While reading this book, she found her answer. The teacher assigns all the students to find a wheel, "...more

This book is a hidden gem. It won the Newbury Medal in 1955 and is a charming tale of the little fishing town of Shora, The Netherlands. When little Lina writes an essay wondering why the storks nest on the rooftops of all the neighboring towns, but fly right over Shora, the whole school, then the whole town come together in a grand project to bring them back. Generations work together and become friends in their quest to bring storks back to Shora.

This is a fun little book about kids (and teachers, and adults) that learn to think differently, imagine possibilities, expand their horizons. In so doing, they push thier boundaries and do more, encountering and touching more peoples' lives that then has a great impact on the results of their dream/goal.
It's set in early Holland and the author does a great job of setting the scene and introducing us to the characters. They are lovable and funny. They are familiar and yet strange, as I, f...more

This is not a page turner and I thought I was not going to like it. I ended up loving it! It is just these little Dutch children trying to get a wheel for their school so that storks will nest there. But it is how their search changes their little fishing village and the people who live there that is so sweet. I have read a lot of it with my six year old and he was really into it. If you read it to your kids you just have to kind of "get through" the first bit.

A sweet story that seemed more of the 19th century than the 20th. (Actually, while I know it was written in 1954, I just realized that I don't know when it was set.) I liked the teacher, especially in the first part of the book. It was interesting to see how he, the intellectual, was contrasted with the fishermen of the village.

I read this book when I was about 8. It has shaped my understanding and love of storks and the Dutch culture ever since. Give it to your kids to read! Read it out loud to your spouse or friend. You won't be disappointed.

"It's really good, and it's cool, and it's funny because the old man hung pots and pans in his tree to keep away the birds. And we read it in Germany and HOlland and the book is about Holland." -- Joshua, age 6 1/2

I really liked this one. It sat on my classroom shelf for 3 years, and I never read it. Glad I finally did.
I thought it should have ended a bit sooner. The first half is great and is almost all you need anyway.

i recently re-read this book to my seven year old son. we both liked it a lot. it might be a little slow-moving for some. it's a sweet story of how one little idea can affect a whole village.

I really enjoyed this one. I feel it is a somewhat ignored book - I had never heard of it before I read it, and I haven't heard much of it since - but really a charming read.

An old Newbery winner that probably few people read anymore, but I love it. His writing reminds me a little of Tove Jansson-- quiet, and with so much said between the lines.

Newbery. I really loved this book. It's about a group of children who want to attract storks to their town and the change it has on the whole town.

From Nanny's bookshelf - don't remember much about it, just that I liked it when I read it when I read it while staying at her house.

I did a book report on this book in the 6th grade. I really enjoyed it, but had difficulty remembering the title many years later:)

This was a Newbery winner in 1954. It would be a great read-aloud to your kids. It's kind of long, but a sweet story.
