The description is incorrect, this volume covers the years 1857-1861, the Buchanan administration thru the Lincoln inauguration. Once again, Allan Nevins does a great job covering the four years leading up to the Civil War. He details the slow but steady progression of the country towards war. Buchanan is a weak president ruled by his cabinet, the "directory," which includes several members whose allegiance is to the south, and not the Union.
