I read this book in high school and was immediately drawn to this young tragic man. Its heartbreaking how this soldier during wartime, has to endure pain, suffering, living life like a stump with a perfectly intact brain...but no limbs, face, or way to communicate. He feels whats going on around him, but cant tell the doctors what he is feeling. This book chronicles his pain, as well as his memories that led up to his enlistment in war... and his grotesque outcome. It wasnt until I was watching ...more
This book changed my way of thinking in reference to our current society's view on keeping people alive even though they are paralyzed, can't speak, can't move on their own...This book brings up the uncomfortable truth of what it would be like to be a prisoner inside your mind and being kept alive...and it's clear to me that this is not a good quality of life. I am strong in mind and honestly, I would rater be dead than to be driven crazy by slow torture of my mind. Great book.
