Obviously Karen Beaumont is a fan of "The Office" since she has stolen Michael Scott's idea for a shoe store named Shoe-la-la. Girly fun!

Okay, I was prepared to hate this book.

Because I HATE Fancy Nancy --or at least, every book beyond the first one and the whole ensuing industry.

Because I HATE books with glitter on the covers.

Because I HATE,HATE,HATE books that buy into the "Disney Princess" sort of crap that we've been drowning in for years, the sort that made it hard to get clothes for my daughters that didn't look like it belonged on a sixteen year old starlet rather than on a pre-tween girl.

And because the names "Ashley" and...more

There's a lot to like about this book. The short, simple rhymes perfectly capture the energy of 4 young girls. Emily, Ashley, Kaitlyn, and Claire are having a party. And what does every girl need? Just the right shoes! The girls shop for shoes, trying on pair after pair, and leaving an exhausted salesmen in their wake. They give up and go home to design their own special, but still kid-appropriate, shoes.

At first glance, this seems to be yet another princess or Fancy Nancy book. But LeUyen Pham...more

If you know me at all, you know I LOVE illustration. Especially book illustration. Especially storybook illustration. So, I do this thing where I find an illustrator I love and I get every book of theirs I can get my hands on. I immerse myself in their art. I gather little tidbits of their lives from the back jacket blubs. I look and look and look. And, I discover new authors that way.

For this one, I already know Karen Beaumont from the excellent Ain't Gonna Paint No More. The book was fun and...more

This is a fantastic book for young readers! My little girl absolutely loves this story, as it's full of cute illustrations, shoes, glitter and has colors she loves. This fun quick read engages little girls as 4 friends go about dressing up and can't find the right shoes, that is until they discover they can make their own just the way they like them. With it's wonderful rhyming words, girls playing dress up and pink cover, make it a must have!

This is an awesome book. The entire book rhymes and has an amazingly cute storyline about girls and their shoes, going to a shoe store and making a mess of the store after having a ton of fun between friends. When I got this book in the mail, I read it to my 7-month-old granddaughter and she was mesmerized by the colors and brilliantly thought-out whimsical illustrations.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to read to any little girl. It brought a huge smile to my face while reading it.

On the fence!

The rhyme and meter are good (Karen Beaumont, natch) and the multicultural pack of friends is welcome (thanks, LeUyen!).

I'm really, really not wild about adding to the girly shopping-as-recreation culture, though I do notice that they reject the super-pointy heels because they "hurt their toes." (Still--on the glamour girls page? They have heels on again, without comment.)

But I do like the ending, where the girls reject all the shoes in the shop and go home and decorate their own...more

This is, straight up, a SUPER cute book. Four diverse little girls, Emily, Ashley, Kaitlyn and Claire, go shoe shopping. Yeah, it's a pretty simple plot. But it has a lovely rhyming structure of all the different and wacky shoes they try on. And it's full of gorgeous drawings by LeUyen Pham, who also illustrated Julianne Moore's Freckleface Strawberry.

There's really not too much else to say. This one I wouldn't say even just relegates to girly girls, since they aren't just looking at fancy shoes...more

Four best, ethnically diverse (blond, Asian American, African American, and redhead) friends are planning a party and need new shoes to wear to their party. The colors of the illustrations vary in pinks, reds, and purples (and there is a shameless exhibition of glitter on the front cover). The little girls pretend to be grown up in a variety of arenas from rock star to bride-to-be—this is a story all about dress-up. The plot is not complicated and the girls do not grow or change, they just have...more

A really fun book for lots of reasons. First of all, I can't keep enough pink, glittery books in the library. Second, I love the rhyme, rhythm and word play (shoe la la). I also like the way the book ends. I can see this more as a long poem turned into a picture book. I can see kids doing some fun poetry reading wit this one. At first I thought it was meant for primary classrooms but I think it would be a great addition to the poetry library of intermediate classrooms.

This is also one of my new...more

For all those glitter-loving little girls (and boys!) comes Shoe-La-La. Sweet little rhyming story about four best friends who want to find just the perfect pair of shoes. The fun is really in trying on the shoes, and the girls leave the store empty-handed just to return home and find that they can decorate their own shoes for a fancy fix-up. Fans of Fancy Nancy will like this one, too. Oh, and the glittery cover? GREAT appeal. I can see the girls fighting over it already.

Four girls are looking for new party shoes. They go to the shoe store and try on shoe after shoe. Finally, it is time for the store to close. The girls have tried on so many shoes they do not know which to pick. They go home and decorate their shoes themselves.

“Lots and lots of leopard spots.
Pink and purple polka dots.
These show off my pretty feet.
These look good enough to eat.
Fuzzy boots for when it snows.
Ballerina
on my toes.”

I stopped to see my nieces and I was asked to read this book to them. How could say no to them? The story is about four friends getting ready for a party but are in need of shoes. They head to the shoe store where they proceed to try on all types and style of shoes.
My nieces loved pictures and all the dresses. Even the cover with the glitter they enjoyed.
It was written in a rhyming fashion which made it easy to read and follow.

Little girls (and big ones as well) will be charmed by the bright, fun illustrations of four little friends who simply must find the perfect shoes. This fun read aloud knows just what girls like...lots and lots and lots of shoes.

Funny, charming and impressing the idea that a little ingenuity and creativity sometimes brings the best and most perfect rewards, this book is sure to liven up any storytime, bedtime or anytime!

For lovers of Fancy Nancy, and sparkles, and glitter, this story seems a good find. Four girls, trying to find the perfect party shoes. And they do, in a rather unexpected way. But along that journey to find the perfect shoe, they trash a shoe store...and then leave it that way because they're out of time and need to hurry home. As a parent, something in me just cringed at that.
Anie
This was a cute book with good illustrations and would be very nice for a lover of shoes. I do not like how the little girls more or less trashed the shoe store without an apology for the time wasted. It felt like "Hey, let's teach our kids bad shopping etiquette!" Overall the book was cute though.

It's never too early to share a "shop 'til you drop" mentality with our daughter, ladies. Fans of "Fancy Nancy" and all things pink will eat up this book about 4 girls who shop for shoes...find nothing that they like and use their own creativity and imagination to fill their need for party shoes.
Betsy
Cute... my daughter picked this out at her school's book fair. It's perfect for her--pink cover with glitter on the front, all about dressing up with your girlfriends and putting on a show. While it wouldn't have been my first choice, she's thrilled with her selection, and I'm thrilled about that.

Four girls are going shoe shopping! They try on a lot of different shoes but they end up not buying any of them. They decorate their own shoes at the end. They look glamorous! I think little girls would love this book. There are rhyming in the book like other books by Karen Beaumont. Grade K-1

Good book to have on book shelf in class for little girls to read if they love shoes. This book can be used to help students listen and identify rhyming words. I would let students participate in an art lesson where they will be given all types of crafts so they can design and make some shoes.

I brought this home from the book fair for my first grade daughter and it was definitely right up her alley:) She is a girly-girl and the sparkly cover and short, funny text grabbed her attention right away. Definitely worth picking up for the little fashionista reader in your life:)

I liked how the girls crafted new shoes at the end of the story but I didn't like the piles and piles of shoes they tried on at the shoe store -very excessive in more ways than one. The illustrations were good. The friends were having lots of fun. I guess I'm just not a shoe person. : (
Polly
Yes, let's encourage all our little girls to have a shoe fetish at age six. It's such an important part of human life.
To be fair, in the end the girls go with creativity over shopping, and the pictures are pretty and colorful, but I still dislike the entire premise.

Plenty of sparkle! This book is about a group of diverse friends who shops for the perfect part of shoes. They shop, shop, shop, and shop only to leave the store empty handed. The girls discover that they can make the shoes, just the way they want them. The book would be great to use during a lesson on writing using ryhming.

I am mixed about this one. I have appreciated reading the reviews of others and see just as many mixed thoughts. Your girls who like pink, and glitter and fancy will like this. Maybe I am just not a pink and glitter type a gal.
Natalie
Definitely a girlie girl book for those kids who like pink, shopping, and shoes. A rhyming story about 4 girls on the search for fancy party shoes. With girls in the home that are obsessed about shoes-the book was a hit!
Kate Hastings
Preschool. Rhyming text follows a group of little girls trying on every shoe they can get their hands on. The store's a wreck and they don't even find a single pair they like. Cute-- but a shoe store owner's nightmare!
Jeff
This picture book clearly aimed at little girls glorifies shopping for shoes. With the over commercialization of childhood, this just continues to feed a stereotype of femininity that doesn't need to be fed.
