3.5 stars so I rounded down because there were issues.

Good story although the ending fell a little short for me. I felt as if Jasha and Ann deserved a more succinct HEA. The serpent and the rose birthmark explanation seemed a bit weak and I would have liked more focus placed on it. As it was, it seemed as if it was an afterthought since we didn't find out about until 80% of the book was concluded. WOW, I loved this book. Maybe because I wasn't expecting to find such an amazing read due to the reviews it had. But I'm glad I actually read it, because I've really enjoyed it.

I loved everything about this book. I was extremely happy with the world that was created. This book was truly outstanding-these days, the paranormal has become increasingly common in the romance genre. This particular series, the first one, was a truly nice surprise. Instead of having the common elements found in paranormals, this one contains a fresh storyline that pushes the boundaries of good and evil. Definitely a must-read for anyone that desires a storyline that is not predictable, and is full of twists that leaves you panting for more.

I love shapeshifters, because there’s always a mystery about them, if not for the life itself is more about finding happiness or discovering the past. There’s some kind of dark side that can be found in any book that features a shape shifter and this one was no different.

Scent of Darkness is the first book in the four book series Darkness Chosen, and overall I'm pleased with the book and how things turned out.

The cast of characters is very well developed and the gaps in characterization lead to questions that can be answered in future books. To be fair, I think I would find this annoying if I was reading this book right when it came out back in 2007, but now that I know that there are three other books I don't mind it at all.

The cast of characters is very well developed and the gaps in characterization lead to questions that can be answered in future books. To be fair, I think I would find this annoying if I was reading this book right when it came out back in 2007, but now that I know that there are three other books I don't mind it at all.

Ann Smith, the heroine of the story and Jasha Wilder's administrative assistant, is a pretty complicated lady. She has a very tragic past that's had a huge role in shaping her present reality, but it hasn't stopped her from being successful in her own right. And yet, she's not really all that happy or content- what she really wants is a relationship and love from the dude that she's seriously ga ga for- her boss, Jasha Wilder.

Jasha, on the other hand, is successful, talented, handsome, and with business acumen to spare, but he's got a nasty, dirty little secret: he and all the dude in his family can turn into predators because of a deal one of his ancestors made with the devil. Ever since, all of their souls have been in jeopardy because part of the deal was the destruction of holy objects held dear to Jasha's family. When Ann inadvertantly discovers one of the holy objects previously thought to be lost forever, all hell brokes loose (no pun intended) and a host of problems and possibilities immediately present themselves.

The sparks definitely fly between Ann and Jasha, even though they both try to deny certain facets of their relationship, albeit in their own way. One of my favorite things about the book, though, was the dynamic that existed between Jasha and the other members of his family, and the unique and funny way in which Ann fit right into that dynamic. They joked together, stood by one another, annoyed the crap out of each other, and basically acted just the way that lots (dare I say, most) families act in real life. The family dynamics alone made me want to read the
rest of the series.

I waxed positively vitriolic in my review of Desire Untamed about victimization of characters in books. Scent of Darkness is a good illustration of how a book can feature a strong hero and an on-the-timid-side heroine without either of those characters being demeaned. Do both characters screw up and make decisions that are misinterpreted throughout the course of the book? Sure, but there was never a moment while reading that I felt as grossed out and disgusted as I did with my previous book. Ann is struggling to find out what she wants from a relationship; Jasha is struggling to be a better person than his pedigree allows for. Both of them find strength and encouragement from the other, which is always nice.

My biggest criticism of the book, and it tends to happen for me with most first books in a series, is that there are a lot of loose ands and facets of the story that don't fully get explained. What's up with Ann's tattoo? What's the deal with Firebird? The fourth son? The dude at the end of the book? Hopefully all this will get explained in the next three installments.

Overall Grade: A-

I did enjoy this book but there were a few things that nagged at me. First, the positives: the style of plot and format reminded me somewhat of Kresley Cole, with a fast-paced beginning (no mucking about), before a slide into a quieter, get-to-know-the-characters stage complete with meet-the-family scene and some light humour. although it has a good story line. I did not see much growth in the characters. I did not like how the virgin in this story acted after she got excatly what she wanted. I foud myself more interested in the relationship of the father and mother rather than their offspring.

The ending was also very weak. I dont think ive ever had one end so lame. Once again the "man" saves his woman and the day but not really. I don't think it came as such a surprise--the ending i mean-- laughable

The scent makes her irresistible. Gabriel leaves his girlfriend for her, strangers are drawn to her, women put their noses in her hair, cats and dogs want to get close. Suddenly, Evangeline is the special girl that she has never been. But being universally attractive has its problems- bad is attracted along with good. Evangeline must decide between bad and good, while trying to decide if she is loved for herself, or just for her magical scent. What is real and what isn’t?

This is a coming of age story in magical realistic style. Evangeline has come to the point in her life where she must find her own identity. The author paints her as an empty vessel into which the scent is poured; Evangeline has no friends, no interests, no ambitions. Will she allow the scent to continue to be all she is, or will she chose to fill herself with something more?

The story itself is interesting; the scent is a unique idea. But Evangeline herself never came to life for me; her lack of interests and drive made her flat. Gabriel isn’t very deep either; he exists to study for med school and to love Evangeline. The villain is well done; he is warped and made my skin crawl. I give this one 4 stars.

I dont know what to say about this. The sexyness was intense but bordering on rape. And I couldn't believe the hero's "instant whatever you want to call this " after ignoring her for so long. And her going from desperately trying to fight him off during sex to then a page later entreating him to her come back safely... Yeah I'm just not buying what this is selling.

This book is so completely and unbelievably steamy and romantic. It starts out with you learning the history of the Konstantine family. Konstantine was the man who cursed the whole family. He promised his soul to the devil so he could turn into a brutal and coldhearted predator. This of course meant that he promised the souls of his children and his children’s children and so on.

Scent of Darkness is a paranormal romance (yay for repetition!) story that has an interesting historical sign your soul and your descendants soul to the devil fog. A family whom raids, rapes and conquers, one feared by all, hired by some, and served by others.

Although I found this book interesting (A word choice I will often use to soften a negative tone), I felt as though I was flung into a world of survival, rape and intrigue.

Ann, an orphan left for dumpster and rat bait, lived her life in fear of the bad ones that always came. Efficient and drowning in her infatuation and lust for her boss, Jasha ... she decides to visit him at his home to seduce him, to make him see her for more than just an administrative assistant.

Jasha is a powerful man, a successful owner of a winery who is profoundly loyal to his family of cursed shape-shifters, those damned for their gifts as they run and hide from the family they betrayed ... survived .. escaped from.

This book is a quick read for those in need of an airplane book or something simple to fall asleep to. Perhaps I am having a bad day and did not give this book the open-minded chance that I am well-known for .. Screw it.

I liked this book... barely. As I tend to obsess and do the whole OCD bit .. I must continue with the series until the end .. yay me. It is the weekend, and I am confident (Now that my thesis is completed and my homework and studying is done...) that I can avoid my computer for a couple of days (Yay me for hiding...) and knock out the other three books before Monday.

I recommend this book to those in need of a cheap paranormal romance thrill. The back story for this story is highly intriguing, but I found the action unmemorable. Moderate rip your eyes out violence and semi strong sexual but brief content .. Only a few scenes.

The concept of the book was really good. A very interesting good versus evil book going back 1,000 years. I am curious to see how the story unfolds so I will finish the series. That being said, there was something that irritated me about the book.

My opinion: When I first started reading, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get into this book. This mouse of a woman just up and decides to do something WAY out of character for her and go to her boss's house uninvited and try and seduce him? When he has no idea of her feelings for him (or so she thinks)? I thought it was crazy, but I guess she figured she had nothing to lose...oh except her job! Anyway, kudos to her for having the guts to do something like that. She had a lot of chemistry with Jasha right away and although they had a lot of ups and downs, he really helped bring her out of her shell. Her parents had given her away when she was born and she was raised by nuns, so she didn't know much outside what she had been taught. She was virgin until she met Jasha! She is shocked by the fact that Jasha can shapeshift into a wolf, but she also has a secret of her own that she takes great strides to hide. I liked how this book set the scene for the books to follow, and I look forward to reading all of them to see what happens to the Wilder family.

This was really 2.5 stars. There was some action, there was some sex, there was some alpha male stuff going on and there was a heroine who was strong and intelligent but acted wishy washy when it came to should I stay or should I go.

I have a couple of problems with this that brought the stars down...the first time they had sex, and if I read correctly, the second time, it wasn't 100% consensual. But she was ok with it cause it was so good. HUH? She was a virgin and was practically taken against...more

I would not recommend this book in audio...the narrator is truly awful. I stopped about halfway through and picked up the book to read instead, and I have to say I enjoyed it much much more.

I like the mythology behind the series very much, but I was not too fond of the hero and heroine of this particular book. I found Jasha to be a littl over the top and Ann to be incredibly whiny and wishy-washy. Maybe it had something to do with the narrator's portrayal of...more

During Anne’s fleeing she falls and lightning strikes revealing a small icon of the Virgin Mary in pristine condition. When Jasha catches up to Anne he is aroused beyond belief and he sees her in a way he has never seen her before. In the rain and lightning things go further than they should but there is no going back from there. With the next day comes a new revelation. The Wilders murderous cousins from Russia have finally found them and now Jasha and Anne must flee for their very lives.
