Overall, this book is a great mix of cultural and ecological discussions about old-growth forests. Found the first chapter, which defines 'old-growth,' to be particularly helpful.

I have some issues about the treatment of Cook Forest in the book, a few of my thoughts on the matter can be found over at my blog:

This is a book for specialists. It is a book of essays, each by a different scholar, about what is an old growth forest, how do we manage old growth forests, what are the social, spiritual, economic, and recreational value of these forests and why should we preserve them. This is a great book if you are interested in such topics but it is not a tree identification manual.
