i LOVE this book, but i have to say the subsequent follow-ups were all basically the same. bear gets sick, bear stays up, bear files taxes, and on it goes.

Good rhythm, lots of different voices to invent...a good read aloud book.
Poor bear hibernates right through most of the party that is carrying in right in his own lair. When he wakes up he is a blubbering mess about being left out but is quickly welcomed to join the fun. Unfortunately, soon after he joins the fun, all of his mates fall asleep leaving him wide awake and on his own. Its no fun being the last awake party animal at dawn....come on, who wants to go to denny's for some 4 am breakfast?...more

This book, available in a baby-friendly board book format, is one of our favorite books for Graeme. The illustrations are beautiful and the text engaging for all of us. During the harsh moments of winter, several small creatures discover the warm cave of a hibernating bear. They hope to settle down in comfort and have a bit of a party by each contributing what they still have to offer, despite the scarce days they're in. Things are going great until the bear wakes up!

This is a fun look at winter...more

I bought this book for my daughter two Christmas's ago. We still read it. As a matter of fact she's reading it now.

I was reminded of it this afternoon while listening to the wonderful NPR show A Way With Words. One of the hosts mentioned this as one of his favorite books (since he's a new Dad).

It's beautifully illustrated by Jane Chapman and written by the wonderful Karma Wilson. The story is both simple and complex. My daughter appreciates it on a different level now than two years ago, but is...more

The illustrations in the book were spot on, they helped tell the story and emphasis the point of the story. They worked really well together, the story and the pictures complimented one another, one would not have worked as well without the other. The illustrator, Jane Chapman, did a great job adding just enough detail to add to the story but not to much to distract from the story. Overall, this is a great visual story with a great story line to go along with it.

This is a story of a bear, hibern...more

While a great brown bear is sleeping during winter hibernation, several animals decide to make the bear’s cave their temporary home. Some of the animals are a cute little mouse and a belching bunny. While his cave fills up with animals, the bear still sleeps. The bear wakes up and finds that all of the animals have been having fun in his cave while he slept. The animals make him feel better by helping him have fun once he is awake.
The illustrations for this book were done in acrylic paint. The b...more

When my now-four-year-old son had to have his tonsils and adenoids removed, he received this delightful book as a gift. Pre-surgery, his snores sounded like a freight train and his poor brother, who shared a room with him, often complained of his "snorks." J. immediately fell in love with it, comparing himself to the snoring bear.

The story is a very simple, yet captivating one superbly written by Karma Wilson and illustrated beautifully by Jane Chapman. The glossy pages are full of color and lif...more

My godson's father is famed for his snoring... So this was a pretty darn obvious choice as a gift.
It's winter and the bear is hibernating... But that doesn't stop a lot of animals from seeking shelter in his nice warm cave... And having a party! But what will the bear think about all these animals in his cave, eating his food, when he wakes up?
The animals are quite cute and the general storyline slows to a nice pace each time that we repeat "But the bear snores on."

Great board book and no forced rhymes!! I can't stand when authors try to make verses rhyme when they just don't - like JANIS does not rhyme with BANANAS! No matter how many times you try to convince yourself that it does, it just isn't happening!
Not so with this book - not only does it flow but it's nicely illustrated and the story? Endearing and enchanting. A definite hit with the pre-school set - especially those who love wilderness animals!

We have this book as a board book and it is GREAT! The language from the Mouse sipping wee slurps to the Hare burping big burps is evocative onomatopoeia. Add the expressive drawings of a menagerie of animals and you have the workings of delightful warm story that you can savor with each retelling. We've added this one to our growing list of bed time books for my 18 month old daughter's night time routine. A real hoot of a read aloud.

This is obviously where Lady Gaga gets her best ideas: "The coals pip-pop and the wind doesn't stop.... But the bear snores on."
Said bear learns an excellent lesson on how to deal with missed opportunities (see also "Existential Regret: A Crossroads of Existential Anxiety and Existential Guilt". doi: 10.1177/0022167803259752. Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jane Chapman follows a group of animals who take refuge from a winter storm in Bear's cave and have a party while Bear sleeps... until Bear wakes up.

Chapman's illustrations were rendered in acrylic paint. Chapman's brushstorkes make the fur look very lifelike. Appealing animals drawn include bear, mouse, hare, badger, gopher, mole, raven and wren. My favorite images are too dark, coals, corn pops, crunch, party, wakes up, and final two pictures.

Wilson writes in a bouncy manner where the words jump off the page in anticipation of being read. Chapman’s excellent and effective illustrations portray a clear contrast between the harsh conditions of the snowstorm to the comfortable, warm and cosy conditions of the bear’s cave.

This would be a great book to read aloud to your class especially with the fantastic illustrations the book offers. It’s a simple tale sharing the fun to be had with bear, mouse, hare, badger, gopher, mole, raven and w...more

This is such a fun book! Loved all the character involved. It was easy to read, I got a large print book. It's set up was simplistic and focused a lot on the beautiful illustrations. It was fun meeting each character and coming up with different voices to fit each one.
Basically the story is based around a cold winters night, and a group of animals coming together and finding shelter in a hibernating bears cave. More and more keep joining until it is one big party in the cave. This book teaches gr...more

The lively yet lovely illustrations really set the feeling of a cozy, inviting den, which the animals invite themselves into. What will happen when Bear discovers they are there? The twist at the end is it’s the bear who is awake and the animals, who have been partying, who are snoring.

Vocabulary: divvy, slumber, blustery

Activities: Act out with simple face masks (need seven participant).
In the book they have white popcorn and black tea. What other colors of food could you bring to share with fr...more

Bear Snores On is a great book for reading aloud. It is the story of a hibernating bear whose cave is visited by several other animals. These animals do all sorts of things but yet the bear snores on. It isn’t until a small pepper flake, from the soup the animals are making, makes the bear sneeze! This wakes him up and he isn’t mad about the fact the other animals are in his cave/waking him up but because the animals are having fun while he was not. The ending is super.

I really liked the rhymin...more

This story left me a little cold. This story follows bear as he is hibernating. His little woodland friends decide that he should not be sleeping but, having fun. They come in the cave and start to party. He wakes up & gets mad and then he feels bad. He decides to relent and party then when he is ready to party, they are all tired and fall asleep. This story sends a message that it is ok to do something if you want to and never mind the consequences. They made bear feel bad about the fact th...more

A great brown bear goes into hibernation for the winter. Many other animals crawl into his cave to keep warm and they have long-term fun without waking the bear at all. But when they accidentally get pepper on the bear he sneezes angrily awake. Instead of being mad at them for waking him up though, the bear is sad because they were having fun without him. They decide to have more fun now and then when the other animals are worn out, the bear is wide awake. I liked this book. I think it would be...more

This book has more five star reviews than I have seen on any picture book, and with good reason. This was a delightful surprise to read. I loved the charming prose and the beautiful artwork. The colors were well coordinated and the illustrations fit with the writing very well.

The writing itself was entertaining, upbeat, and fun. I was partying right along with all the animals! I would definitely recommend Bear Snores On to anyone looking for a good picture book. With the theme of hibernation, i...more

I had to read this book aloud in one of my education classes and I think that it gave me a better understanding and appreciation for the text. I enjoyed that it was a continuous story that kept adding more animals to the mix with every turn of the page and each character seemed to have a personality which was interesting and kept the reader engaged. The story line was a bit rough and predictable (obviously the bear had to wake up at some point), but this story could help teachers teach on hibern...more

This book is great fun.

The language flows well, the friends interact naturally (which is not always the case in these books), and its easy and fun to create voices for the different characters that are introduced throughout the book. My son loves this one and has brought it over for reading since the age of 12 months or so.

Karma Wilson's sequels (from what I've read) are not nearly as enduring-- but I won't hold it against here because she set the bar pretty high.

P.S.-- It would just be cruel...more

I am now a fan of karma Wilson and all of her books. She uses rich vocabulary and the children can learn a ton from this book from hibernation to emotions as well. I would recomend this book to be in everyone's classroom.

This is a fun rhyming story that could introuce hibernation though science is hardly focus here. It is a cute story of a collection of animals that gather in a bear's den during a terrible storm while he sleeps. The group grows a few animals at a time and the party grows continually until the bear sniffs a pinch of pepper and sneezes himself awake. He's understandably upset to find his den occupied by so many but they are friendly animals and they ofer him to join i the festivities and they all...more

I read this book to my preschoolers all the time. They love this book. What I like about this story is all the different characters it has in it, which makes it funner to read allowed because I get to use different voices to play each animal. When dealing with kids it is always good to have animals in the story. Its cute because everytime the phrase "And the bear snores on" comes up in the book, I have the class pretend to snore. it is very cute and keeps them interested in the book. I think Ka...more

Illustrations and text are both really nice is this book. It's winter time and bear continues to sleep even as many animal visitors sneak into his den. The text is very rhythmic. I find myself almost singing the words. I particularly like how the words "but the bear snores on" are not only accented by placement and bold text, but also by how they break the rhythm of the rest of the text. Its almost as if you hear a big bass voice coming in to break the song and say "but the bear snores on!" The...more

A wonderful story to read on a cold winter's night. Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman created wonderful characters that take up residence in bear's cave as a great brown bear snores on. A itty-bitty mouse and other friends look for warmth and a snack beside the sleeping bear. Through Jane Chapman's beautiful illustrations and Karma Wilson's catchy writing, children learn about friendship as they are introduced to hibernation. Children will enjoy listening to this snowy story about what animals may d...more

Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson is a lovely hibernation story. Bear is busy sleeping in his cave for the winter when a mouse wanders in and decides to build a fire. Fast forward a few pages and there is a forest party building inside the cave. Most readers will anticipate that bear will eventually be woken from all of this excitement, however his response is both surprising and comical. Descriptive language, warm illustrations, and lighthearted entertainment make this a perfect book to cuddle up...more

An adorable parade of woodland creatures gathers in the lair of a hibernating bear to take shelter from a blustery storm. Everything goes quite cozily until Bear wakes up to an unexpected party. It's like THE HOBBIT meets WINNIE-THE-POOH, told with big cute pictures and spare cutesy verse.

This 2003 ALA Notable Book makes a great choice for preschool story times built around themes of winter, friendship, forest animals, or waking up from snoozing. I am also convinced it would make awesome puppet...more

Karma Wilson grew up an only child of a single mother in the wilds of North Idaho. Way back then (just past the stone age and somewhat before the era of computers) there was no cable TV and if there had been Karma could not have recieved it. TV reception was limited to 3 channels, of which one came in with some clarity. Karma did the only sensible thing a lonely little girl could do…she read or pl...more
