When Tropical Storm Faye cut my power off last night, I had little else to do but read by candlelight. My copy of Isabel Allende's Ines of My Soul was in my truck, and walking out in the rain to fetch it didn't seem plausible, and while reading Linda Grey Sexton's memior about her mother, Ann Sexton, is as enjoyable as reading a memoior of a woman who was physcally, emotionally and sexually abused by her mother can be, Searching For Mercy Street didn't seem like the kind of book I ...more

When I first saw the movie back in the 1990s, I hadn't embraced my dark side yet. I thought it was depressing and left me with the feeling of, "Now what?"

Of course, as I grew older, I realized that not everything has a happy ending. And I learned how to make fun of the bad parts of life. So when I picked up Election in a bookstore a few years ago, I figured I'd give it a go. Very smart move on my part.

Election is an interesting spin for Perrotta--it's the only novel he has writ...more

election.
i saw the movie years ago and loved it.
so, when i saw the book at a book sale, i was completely psyched.
told through multiple narratives, election follows the student government process at a middle american high school. tracy flick, an overacheiver, is assured of victory for student body president, until a meddling teacher (mr m.) convinces the BMOC (football star paul warren) to run against her, inciting mayhem and treachery.
for me, this was one of those rare instances where ...more

Paul Warren-Popular, good looking, nice, smart, HS football player.
Tracy Flick-Agressively ambitious, president of the junior class, editor of the school newspaper, star in the school musical and slept with her English teacher.

I am going through my Tom Perrotta phase. I held off on this one, because I loved the movie. As much as I loved the movie, I have to admit that the book was better, as usually is the case. In defense of the movie, it's a pretty decent adaptation and where is strays from the book, only make the movie stronger.

The characters in the book are much more sympathetic, especially Tracy and Mr. M. I also preferred the ending in the book, it brought the story full circle. The ending in the movie in fu...more

Great movie, mediocre book. Yes, one of the rare times where the movie is significantly better than the book.

Perotta is not a great writer. He's a hip writer and some of his observations are smart and incisive. Yet, in this book and "Joe College", he struggles with the basics like point-of-view. I read Elmore Leonard at the same time and the difference is striking. Even though Leonard is an old fuddy-duddy, he's honed his craft. Perotta hasn't.

Tom Perrotta's Election is undoubtedly one of his best books. Quite different from the film in several ways -- particularly the conclusion -- it's completely entertaining of its own right. I don't think it takes the events that it portrays in quite the same serious light as the sublime, Little Children, instead it presents things in a broader, much more satirically comical way. I also didn't think that it was quite as devastating as the film Election was either. There was...more

I like Tom Perrotta a great deal, but this wasn't my favoritest-of-all-time book of his (it's kind of a toss-up between Joe College and Little Children for me). However, I think the movie (which I saw first - I know, I know; bad me) did it justice admirably. Somewhat like Fight Club, I think I prefer the movie version to the book. But it's still very enjoyable. Any Tom Perrotta book is pretty much a guaranteed good, worthwhile read.

This was a library book my mom read and still had a few days left on it, so she passed it along to me. Extraordinarily fast read, entertaining. Common ingredient between this and the other Tom Perrotta book I read, Little Children: extramarital affairs, and lots of 'em! Seems like he relies a little too heavily on unexpected character pairings to move things along, but as I said already - fast read, entertaining.

Didn't make complete sense of the movie, so I got the book. Much more complex. Makes Tracey more understandable, more complex and more likable. Same for just about everyone. Biggest promotion for Paul, who in the movie is just a dumb jock. In the book, he's actually bright -- Mr M wakes him up from intellectual stupor and he's running for President to make up for his mediocre grades. Etc.

Kinda boring, but a real fast read. I didn't care for the characters, so it was difficult to care whether or not they got what they wanted. Everything happened too quickly. With so many characters I think they all could have been fleshed out a bit better. This is my first Perrotta book, and I've heard lots of good things about him, so maybe I'll just try something a bit longer next time.

Perrotta absolutely nails life in American suburbs, and this book is no exception. He really gets the nuances of high school subcultures. The book was written before Hillary Clinton ran for president, but yet Tracey Flick can remind you of her. It's a really interesting book, but I was frankly grossed out by the male teachers' conversations about going to bed with high school girls.

This is my favorite fiction book ever written. It's funny, sweet and manages to capture the horrors of adolescence (and suspended adolescence) perfectly. Perrotta does a magnificent job of capturing the differences in the voices between his characters. I also love all of the transferrence that happens between scenes. I love the ending of the book, too.

There's been so much buzz about Perrotta with Little Children and now his new Abstinence Teacher, felt I had to give one a try. I was expecting a more masterful prose style, it threw me with its simplicity. Not a bad novel, but I felt like I was just passing time until I picked up something else. Maybe this was one of his more lighter works?

A very quick read. If you love the movie (it's a favorite) then you'll like the book. It's classic Perrotta writing -- it's simple and reads like a magazine article. The plot is awesome -- a scandalous high school election with an over-achiever, a jock, and a coming-to-terms with her lesbianism loner.

Huh. I've loved the film "Election" since seeing it in the cinema in, I guess, 2000 or thereabouts. Until two days ago I had no idea it was based on a novel. The book was a reallly easy read - one day - and, until the last few chapters, was very close to the film. Smart, funny and very enjoyable.

More love for Tom Perrotta! I'm just crazy about him. The movie was very faithful to the book, so no surprises. But, definitely more character insight. I think I liked Tracy Flick more in the book than in the movie and Paul is a lot brighter in the book. A great, quick read!

Pretty fast read. I finished it in a day. Entertaining but I think the movie was much better. Probably because I've had a crush on Reese Witherspoon since I saw her in The Main in the Moon.

Some different things happen in the book that they improved on for the movie.

After having Mitch bug me all year about reading this book, I decided I should finally just finish it off. It wasn't quite what I expected, but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. It definitely would be an interesting choice for a high school book club discussion.

This was very sharp, witty, fast paced. Very similar to the film if you've already seen it. However, the only criticism I'd have is that none of the characters are that likeable (apart from the good natured popular jock who is really too dull to relate to).
