1894. Arguably one of the best-known Suffragette writers, Beatrice Harraden was a popular novelist who was heavily involved in the Suffragette tax resistance campaign. Her best-selling sentimental romance, Ships that Pass in the Night tells of a doomed love-affair between two patients in a tuberculosis sanitarium. This story caught the public's imagination, and the title b ...more

Sağ gösterip çeneme çaktı kitap resmen. Baya baya canım yanıyor şu an ve isyan edip haykırmak sabaha kadar ağlamak istiyorum. Böyle olacağını biliyordum ama BÖYLE olacağını bilmiyordum. Hala inanamıyorum.

Orijinali Kitap Esintisi adresinde.

"..the real importances of our existence are the nothingnesses which the philosopher in his study, reasoning about and analysing human character, is apt to overlook; but which, nevertheless, make him and every one else more of a human reality and less of an abstraction."

Evet,

If it weren’t for several well placed comedic points, the novel would be extremely crunchy and I probably would not have enjoyed it as much as I eventually did. The story, which I started calling an anti-love story, is well written and engaging. The disagreeable man’s nickname is well given; he is extremely unlikable and I wondered what Bernadine actually saw in him. The only times he comes off as compassionate is when he leaves Petershof and goes Loschwitz, a small village, where he visits a fa ...more

Huysuz adam (Robert Allitsen) ve Bernardine’in hikayesi ;

Rakkausromaani yli sadan vuoden takaa. Tuberkuloosiparantolan arkea 1800-luvun lopulta, ajalta jolloin parannuskeinot olivat äärimmäisen rajallisia. Osa tervehtyi, suurin osa menehtyi hivuttavaan tautiinsa. Kiehtovaa lukea suomennosta ...more

Believe it or not, I found an old copy of this book that dates back to 1910.
I came across this treasure in one of our local thrift stores and I simply needed to read it.
All in all, it was romantic, secretive, and sad. The connection/relationship between Bernardine and Robert is similar to Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, a hate-to-love.
I absolutely loved reading this book, and love reading it over and over again.

Interesting because it takes place in a Kurhaus in the Alps for tb patients, before the illness could be cured by drugs. However, it is quite depressing, and the title is apt.
Read as an ebook from the Gutenburg project. I read it because Gretha has also bought a copy when she was in England. She hasn't read it yet and I don't think she is going to like it, although it has some interesting observations about nursing.

Old fashioned in a delightful way. Not at all what I expected, but if you like old, British books then you'll probably enjoy it. I did!

I picked up this little gem at a market - it was a very old OLD hardback - and I loved the story. Highly recommend to any sentimentalist.

Born in Hampstead, London on 24 January 1864, Harraden studied in Dresden, at Cheltenham Ladies’ College in Gloucestershire and at Queen’s College and Bedford College in London, and received a BA degree. She travelled extensively in Europe and the United States and in 1893 found fame with her debut novel, Ships That Pass in the Night, a love story set in a tuberculosis sanatorium.
