Every installment of Fullmetal Alchemist I could claim is a "good" one, and this is no exception. Verily, Volume 9 is (like most other volumes) a "great" one. I particularly love the increasing complexity of the situation as the Elric brothers - and readers! - must untangle information concerning the government, the philosopher's stone, and peoples' loyalties. And every character is memorable, a factor so incredibly important for any well-written work. Thank you, Hiromu Arakawa, for the enticing More...

This one was a really good one! Maria Ross is suspected of murdering Maes Hughs! Rest in peace *sniff* Meanwhile, Barry the Chopper escapes where Falman was supposed to be keeping an eye on him! The Elric brothers return to Central, unaware of the death of their friend Hughes...This book was great!!! This volume of the series had a...sort of quiet intensity mixed with drama and a murder mystery! I stayed up till midnight again reading!!! Heheheheh. Well, what do you expect me to do? THESE BOOKS More...

Volume 9 of Fullmetal Alchemist of Fullmental Alchemist by Hiromu starts an interesting arc that explains how soul transference works. Some of that was hinted at in Volume 8 but it's here that it comes to disturbing fruition.

Barry the Chopper is the key to this unsettling revelation. When he goes missing, his keepers send his body to find him. A body needs a soul to function and as Ed and the ex-death-row prisoners haves demonstrated, a soul can even animate a suit of armor. But a soul can't sta More...

The fact that it is one of the few shonen manga written by a woman makes FMA all the more interesting, but the intricate plot, colorful cast, and historic setting make it a must read for any manga fans.

In this volume, 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross is framed as the murderer of Maes Hughes by a shape-shifting homunculi. Colonel Roy Mustang sets out to help the innocent Ross escape from prison, meanwhile faking her death while his subordinates help her escape the country.

It’s really hard to review volume 9 without giving out some major spoilers, so if this review is more vague than most I apologize. Volume 9 is a bit of a wake up call as Maes Hughes death finally comes to light for the Fullmetal Alchemist and his friends. They are devastated by the loss and blame themselves for dragging him into this mess in the first place. They have some tough decisions to face as a result and some real growth is shown here for both the boys and for Winry as well.

The events in More...

Pretty much every volume in this series is 4 or 5 stars, except maybe the first few (it take a bit to get all the characters straight), but this particular volume has some exceptional storytelling. The scenes where the boys and Winry find out about (spoiler!) Hughes' death (end spoiler) and visit his family and process it all afterward are some of the best I've read so far.

Maria is wrongly accused of what happened to Hughes, and Roy and co. spring into extremely clever action (I love their code names!). We also get a little bit of a flashback to the Ishbal civil war and more background depth on Roy's posse, especially Armstrong. Great cover art, too.

As the manga series continues to spiral in its own different direction from the anime version, I, while I enjoy Barry's antics, find myself wondering if Arakawa can continue to raise the bar given how much she has already revealed.

Still, I liked this volume.

Lots of chess play in this volume as the reader goes back to the Hughes murder. That's the thing with Arakawa too. An event is not forgotten, especially one as pivotal the Hughes murder.

We also get the intro of Xing characters in this volume.

I don't know if it's because I read book 8 so long ago, but this one seemed confusing to me. Not confusing enough that I needed to reread it, but enough that I had to use some effort to keep the storyline in my head.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This volume is definitely the best so far.
But, let's be honest. Anything with a heavy Team Mustang plot is going to be in my favorites.
This volume certainly filled that criteria.

Lecture de nuit. J'adore ! Je pense que j'ai passé plus de la moitié du tome à rire tellement certains passages m'étaient drôles. Et le personnage de Barry le boucher est génial XD

Excelllent, gripping continuation of the series. The Elric brothers find out what happened to Col. Hughes. Meanwhile, someone is out to get Barry the Chopper. A real page turner.

This is the second time this series had almost made me cry -- the scene with Hughes' family was perfect. Arakawa gets better and better and wordless scenes and letting the pictures cary the emotional weight. The military continues to get darker and more ominous, and it is less clear who the "good" guys are; that is made extra-apparent by Barry the Chopper somehow winding up on the side of right.

Sigh. Now I have to wait for inter-library loan to get me the next four volumes . . .

Ed and Al head back to headquarters and Maria Ross is suspected in the murder of Hughes. Some intense and sad moments. The ending especially.

The number of characters threatens to tax a reader in remembering their motivations, loyalties and different personalities. However, strong writing and characterisation avoid this. The plot moves briskly along and panel pacing was well done.

THis one explains so much about the military backstories. and this does so well keeping a story line between books.
