Lot's of silly suspense, fake drama and a trite main character. When I bought this book, I thought Immanuel Kant would play a more active role as in those mystery novels built ariund Jane Austen and other historical characters. Instead, Kant is a pathetic old man with no real exploration of him. The protagonist is a young magistrate who would like to be an intellectual but isn't. He is too sentimental and inconsiderate and goes off in all kinds of directions becuase he doesn't really know wh...more

Kisah detektif bernuansa filsafat memang sedang tren.

I had higher hopes for this book than it delieverd. With the tie in to Kant, I had hoped for some philosophy and mystery together. Unfortunately the depiction of Kant is truly not flattering. And the main character was a bumbling idiot who was not likeable and thought too much (and not in a good way).
I might be tempted to read the second book to see if his issues, as resolved in this book, actually help his character.

I finished this novel just to see how things would turn out. It kept me curious, at any rate. However, I was expecting a lot more philosophy--not just the idea that, to some, cold-blooded murder=God-like power. Gregorio couldn't seem to decide whether he was writing a mystery or not. The book seemed to lack focus. Perhaps if I knew more about Kant's philosophy (since he figures prominently in the story and his work creates the themes), I would have enjoyed it more.

I started reading this book and found it draggy and heavy-handed. I put it aside. My husband picked it up and read it on vacation for lack of anything else to read. He said it was a pass. It meandered, dragged and the ending as telegraphed about 1/2 way through the book.
I usually finish everything I start reading. Based upon his recommendation, I am not going back.

I didn't like the main character- I wanted to slap him several times. Blind and repetitive, but perhaps that was the author's point.
I liked the idea of a book with Kant in it, but this one didn't meet my expectations.

I thought this was promising at first, but it ended up being SO obvious that I had to force myself to finish. Maybe if I were a Kant fan I would have been more interested, even though I'd already figured it out.

Probably deserves more than 3 stars, but the 19C German style chosen by the authors for "couleur locale" does not sit well with me.
Also the plot reminded me of Dibdin's Last Sherlock Holmes Story.

Interesting. Unique. Great mood. Unusual "detective." Not your usual cookie-cutter historical mystery. Ending(s) left me wondering. In a good way.

Couldn't finish it - I gave it the old 100 page try, but it just didn't capture my interest at all. Back to the library with this one.
