Written by Andrew Kramer and illustrated by Leslie Lammle (2010). New York: Harper. This is a cute picture book which illustrated driven with small amount of words. It is the sotry of three children who are siblings who are in their pajamas, sitting on their beds. Then the moom shines in and they go on a treasure hunt as pirates. They look for the treasure with a stolen map, fight other pirates who want the same thing and then scaring them off with ghosts made out of blankets. A great storm come...more

It’s getting close to bedtime, which means it’s time for the pajama pirates to sail off for an adventure. Three siblings imagine that a bed is their boat and head off for a treasure hunt. They defeat the enemy pirates just before their mother calls them back to bed. They row back to shore and fall into their beds to dream of buried treasure, sewing new sails, and buying new oars.

Lammle’s illustrations take center stage in beautiful two page spreads full of rolling waves, not-so-scary enemy pirat...more

Hmm. I always find it interesting when I want to give a book more or fewer stars than the average. But oh well, I liked this one! The rhymes were sweet and all the kids playing together was fun and the whole pirates thing WORKED in this story (unlike another one I looked at at the same time whose title I did not even jot down because it was annoying).

Plus the illustrations were lovely.

I really wanted to like this book, but the rhymes were inconsistent and don't lend themselves well to read-alouds. The illustrations in this book were wonderful and engaged the imagination. I almost think this book would have been better if it had been a wordless picture book. This might be a great bedtime book for an early independent reader who loves pirates.

When night falls, pajama pirates set out in search of treasure but soon find themselves surrounded by foes.

A cute book that takes you back to the time of sleepovers or sharing a room with siblings. When your bed wasn't a bed and the floor was water. Love how Mother Nature in this book is Mom saying it's time to go to sleep. All children will be able to relate to the imaginative way they put off going to sleep.

bedtime story that nicely peaks in adventure, then mellows down to peaceful, sleepy ending. great option for pirate-obsessed who are in need of a bedtime option written in flowing verse and highlighted with dreamy illustrations with strong blue tones. requested twice by my audience...!

Sometimes we have a pirate themed storytime kit, and it is hard to find not too scary easy toddler early preschool stories, and this one seems like it might work. It at least isn't too scary or long. It did make me want to go to sleep, which is sort of the point.

Three children put on their pajamas and take off on a treasure hunt, their beds and room transforming into ships and a vast ocean. I love the contrast of blue and yellow in the illustrations and the whimsical look of the characters' faces.

This book is perfect for showing how using your imagination can take you to many fun adventures as told by children before bedtime. They leave their bedroom to venture out and let the treasure hunt begin.

Hooray for books that encourage the use of your imagination! Didn't all of us imagine that our beds were once something like the Pajama Pirates imagine theirs to be a ship?

The rhymes are awkward. And why do the characters look like they're from that old cartoon in Highlights Magazine, "The Timbertoes"?
But it's pirates, so this will circ.......

Doesn't quite make sense. A ghost from the sails (that just looks like a holey sheet) chases away the real pirates? The illustrations are a bit too busy, swirly.

Used this as a read aloud to my students today. One of the worst written books I've ever read. It just didn't work, and my kids weren't into it at all.
Lauren
Very sweet illustrations. It rhymes, but sometimes the verse is split between pages so it makes it a bit awkward to read aloud in a few spots.
Jane
a great bedtime story for 3-5 year old; should have some background knowledge of pirates and the names of different parts of a ship. Nice rhyme

Gabe got this one from his grandma for Christmas. It's really cute. Fun illustrations and good rhymes and poetry. I mean it's pirates!!! ARRRGGGH!!!

(K-2) Love the sweet illustrations that accompany the rhyming words of children who just aren't quite ready for bed.
Jenny
Loved the charming illustrations, but this rhyming story was awkward to read and could have been stronger.
Amanda
Cute and flows well reading out loud, though end verses a little forced
Nance
The cute adventure taken by these pirates is great; but the rhyme is forced.

Growing up my brother had a captains bed that served as our ship during our ship sailing adventures. For a time both of my brothers and I shared a room so this story which is about 3 siblings (a girl and 2 boys) reminds me a lot of my childhood. It's told in a sing-song rhyme that reminds me of the Llama Llama series by Anna Dewdney

Dreams, pirates, and imagination. This is a softly illustrated pirate adventure book that ends with bedtime. Nice way to end a pirate storytime.
