I did end up liking this one. I think most people that enjoy YA mysteries will like it.

Poor Liam just seemed to be having a string of bad luck. Well, of course he brought it on himself, but I still felt bad for the guy. He gets a really bad foul at a basketball game and in a moment of psycho, assaults the other player with a chair. Really bad. But he doesn't get picked up until 3 days later. I'm not sure how he was allowed to leave in the first place.

At first I was confused as to why his paren...more

Liam figures things couldn’t get worse. A confrontation on the basketball court lands him in jail, his parents disown him, his girlfriend breaks up with him and now a judge sentences him to complete his remaining high school years at the Admiral Farragut Academy. Can it get any worset? Apparently, it can. He makes enemies upon arrival at the Academy and he is assigned to Room 509, a dorm room that has been sealed for twenty years. At first, he dismisses the stories surrounding the room: that all...more

I picked this book based on a small excerpt where Liam is literally shoved out of bed by no-one. I haven't read many ghost stories and figured I was over due.

The book starts with Liam being hurt by 2 members of the opposing basketball team, one of which then foul him just as he is about to take the winning shot at the end of the match, Liam loses his mind in the heat of the moment and takes his revenge by beating him with a folding chair, leaving him in a coma. Liam then finds himself facing aggr...more

This was an excellent book! The main character Liam Rider a former basketball star at Brick Memorial High School let his temper get the best of him near the end of an important game and he brutally beat up a competitor. After the opponent's parents decided they want to press charges against Liam for assault and battery. Liam's parents abandoned him and the public defender was able to get him sentenced to Admiral Farragut Academy instead of going to prison since he called in a favor from a long-t...more

Towering Pines is the story of Liam Rider. Hotshot basketball star. After commiting an assualt he finds himself enrolled in Military school. It's here that he meets Lisbeth Harrington and a friendship is formed. But it's also the beginning of Liam's mysterious dreams and his encounters with the ghosts from romm 509's past.

I have to say that when I first started reading this book, I didn't like the characters. None of them!! I thought they were quite the group of angry young men. I felt no Sympat...more

ETA: The author has confirmed that I was sent an earlier unedited manuscript by mistake, accounting for the errors.

I have to be absolutely brutally honest here and say the writing is terrible. The story and ideas are good and intriguing, but the actual writing was appalling. The sentence structures are longwinded and awkward, reminiscent of the run-on sentences I used when writing stories in the 1st grade. Sometimes the author is in dire need of 5 commas, other times the sentences are just too s...more

I picked up and read Towering Pines in August at the book release event in NJ. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I picked it up, I just knew that I had already read Sands of Time by this author and enjoyed it thoroughly -- but I knew that this book was different from what the author told me when I got it signed.

Right away I could see he was write. The angle he took was more akin to a traditional point-of-view instead of the first person accounting in Sands of Time. I immediately found t...more
