In this compelling memoir by a writer, mother, and feminist, Jane Lazarre confronts the myth of the "good mother" with her fiercely honest and intimate portrait of early motherhood as a time of profound ambivalence and upheaval, filled with desperation as well as joy, the struggle to reclaim a sense of self, and sheer physical exhaustion. So, I'd been wanting to read this book for eighteen years! I clearly remember a particular professor in college recommending it to me. She said it was a great, unvarnished look at the feelings of ambivalence that can surround motherhood.

It is certainly that. It also feels, for better or worse, really cemented in its time (the 1970s), and in the particular perspective of this particular mom (who was in an interracial marriage, who got pregnant by accident at age 27, who lived in graduate student

When this book was published in 1976, it may have been revealing truths about motherhood no one was talking about, but the blurb from Adrienne Rich is a testament to the lack of literature on the subject at the time. Wow. This book helps me know that others have wrestled with the same questions I am and have (apparently) come through it with arrangements that work for them. I am pleased that Ms. Lazarre was so willing to share some of her personal history, including thoughts and actions that most people would not be willing to share. It makes me both happy to see that a book written in 1976 seems so current in so many ways - it makes me feel like it isn't just a personal failing of mine to have trouble being ...more

Powerful look at motherhood with the gloves off!
Classic read, a book that should be read by all new mothers that harber any guilt associated with not measuring up to the impossible standards of Motherhood.

2 months after giving birth, it is the perfect book to read! It took me just a day.

Read this either right before giving birth or right after, not when deciding if you want children. Lazarre is brutally honest.
