Money. Greenbacks vs. gold. The Lincoln administration prints greenbacks to pay for its war with the Confederacy, and on Wall Street a renegade money market known as the Gold Room pits the greenback against gold. Gold Under Ice is Carol Buchanan’s second novel based on the Vigilantes of Montana. Descended from Montana pioneers and homesteaders, Carol is a nonfiction writer and student of Montana history who turned to historical fiction in God’s Thunderbolt, The Vigilantes of Montana, which won the 2009 Western Writers of America Spur award for Best First Novel.

(Full disclosure: I'm the publisher of this book.)

Carol Buchanan, off the success of her Spur Award-winning debut, "God's Thunderbolt," is back with the sequel, "Gold Under Ice."

This was a very good book. I gave it 4 stars because of the language. I am very familiar with Alder Gulch in Montana, have visited Virginia City many times, I lived very close to the area. Though the book was not about whatthe vigilantes did, it was about the life after the town was cleaned up. Dan went through a lot for his family, put up with a lot from his grandfather, but he won out in the end. I am looking forward to reading God's Thunderbolt Vigilantes of Montana next.

REALLY like this book. Great historical setting about a time and place in history with which I was not familiar, great characterization and description, plus I enjoyed learning about the development of trading on Wall Street during the Civil War era. Romance without the sleaze. Recommend this one.

Terrific sequel to "God's Thunderbolt" and a real page-turner. Even better than her first novel.
