Meh...I have mixed emotions about this book. I was definitely NOT sucked in at any point--in fact, I was really just reading as fast as i could to get through it. The main character, Sophie is recovering from extremely poor treatment at the hands of a sadistic previous master. Though there is not a ton of detail about Sophie's time with Master Barry, the detail that is given is enough to tell me that Sophie gave up too much power to be his submissive and he took advantage of her. After rereading and reading some other BDSM romances I gained gained more appreciation for the deeper themes of this book.
I really liked it but I didn't get sucked into this book as much as Owning Wednesday (where the characters had a more volatile relationship) and the the abusive ex plot had a lot of potential but fell kind of flat, but I that's okay-- the emotional journey the characters undertook was more important to the story and that part was done really well. I don't know what the heck I was doing reading non taboo books because this one like Ms Jospeh's Comfort Object affected me a lot. It's erotic, deeply erotic, vitally erotic and it's also a BRILLIANTLY written book. The hero- I mean seriously can we have more heroes who aren't just a means to the heroine's satisfaction. This is recommended by the Erotic Enchants group in GoodReads as the book of the month and the first Annabel Joseph book I've read. I found that I can tolerate BDSM acts as long as they are consensual and for the pleasure of both dom and sub.

I wanna know, why Ms. Joseph writes such fucked up females. Seriously Sophie, what is your deal? How can you be that broken? WTF. This story was disturbing as it shows the real dangers of BDSM life style. BDSM people are no different than regular people. Some are abusive bastards too. Having read a few of Joseph's novels I see a trajectory of growth and expansion that makes reading the earlier works just as pleasurable as later, more sophisticated works. Sometimes I have a hard time connecting with Annabel Joseph's books since they tend to be on the darker side of erotica. I love her style of writing, but the scenes are a bit too much for me. Deep in the Woods was an interesting read. I enjoyed reading it, but it definitely isn't one of my favorites of Ms. Joseph's.

First time I have ever read a story with BDSM. I actually liked it. At least, I liked the way the author portrayed it here. I appreciated some of the complexity and the emotions involved in being a dominant/submissive relationship that the author showed. The only thing I didn't really like is the drama with the ex-boyfriend at the very end, when it went down an extreme route.

I enjoyed this one. The plot was interesting. The ex was horrifying - and I was vaguely disturbed by the group which did not really do anything. It didn't sit right with me. Then again I think there is a line -- each to their own it's true but when you are talking drugging someone -- then you remove the consensual part IMHO. Annabel is a phenomenal writer - one whose craft gets stronger with each book. She is a joy to read and a very fresh voice in the genre!
