Benny's Pennies is about a young boy named Benny McBride who has five new pennies. In the end Benny spends his five new pennies on five wonderful, simple gifts for his mom, brother, sister, dog, and cat. Not only could you use this book to teach about the character word generosity, but you could also use it in math. This would be perfect for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. The book could help teach them about the monetary value of a penny, how to count backwards from five, and sequencing to r...more

I've seen a good deal of books focusing on adding but this one really focuses on subtracting, which i have not seen a lot of. really you could focus on both but i really liked the subtracting aspect of the book. You could also review comprehension with this book really easily using a story board. the pictures would be very simple to make i think. children may also get good connections out of this book because of the different types of gifts. Maybe one has a mother, and their mother got flowers f...more

This neat book is packed full of lessons. Teachers can discuss money: how many pennies? How much did he spend? How much was each item? Did he spend his money wisely? There is also a lesson on one to one counting: going through each page and counting the coins he has left. There's even subtraction: if he had five pennies, and bought two items for a penny each, how much does he have left?

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I read this book for the first time to my students this past school year and fell in love with it. It is so great for class discussion on many levels: counting, money, saving/spending, one-to-one correspondence, family, helping, friendship. There are just so many lessons packed into this simple, short children's book. Genius.

I found this book in the teacher resource library at my placement. Benny buys five different items as he walks down the street with his five new pennies. I am going to recreate this story in my placement with my kids since they just started money. We will extend it to more difficult purchases after we reinact the book

This book reminds me of another book I have read about a boy who receives money and purchase gifts for his family. I think providing children literature that teaches them generosity to others should be incorporated into the classroom to enrich the lives of students.

Good illustrations, nice story, good lesson in money, giving, and gratitude. Nice rhymes, not "dumbed down" for younger children. AR level is 2.0.

I used this book when I taught a money lesson. The kids really liked it. Nice rhymes and predictable wording.
