Seriously, these books are like crack. Some choice terms and quotes (defs mostly from King's invaluable A Sea of Words):

I've heard people say that this isn't one of his better novels, but I think that's mostly people griping because there's not enough action in it - the battles that are threatened in the earlier half of the book never come off, and the titular Ionian Mission is confined to the last quarter or so of the book. But his trademark wit and historical vibrancy are there in bucketloads; and I think it's a good reminder of the fact that life in the royal navy at the time didn't consist of non-stop battles...more

I've been a bit slow in getting back to the Aubrey/Maturin series, but I have no idea why- this book reminded me how much I love them. The characters still have their witty and pithy comments, the nautical knowledge is omnipresent but does not impede the storytelling, and I was completely enthralled with the story. I'm so glad Jack seems to have his luck back!
I can't wait to get the next book...

The O'Bryan Series appeals to sea faring individuals and probaby more to young males. However, I love it, because it makes me use a dictionary and consequently I learn new words and also an atlas and I learn geography. Plus the writing is excellent, I think. This is number 8 in the series and I look forward to the other 20 some odd.

another jack aubrey/stephen maturin napoleonic era sea saga. the writing is excellent with well developed, multi dimensional characters, interesting historical and nautical facts and a good action yarn to boot. a terrific series of books.

Not my favorite, but still a good read. I've finally started looking up some of these words (mostly the sailing terms I am not familiar with). Guess this isn't my favorite because there are not battles until the very end.

Aubrey meets with frustration and questions his own character before the violent conclusion. Rev. Nathaniel Martin makes his entrance, and Jack and Stephen return to the Joyful Surprise.

One of the better of the 10 I've read so far...probably b/c there is a plot line involving the need for Capt. Aubrey to make political, as well as military decisions.

The Aubrey/Maturin books fall under the category of "guilty pleasure". Still, they are a pleasure....

Not the best of the Aubrey-Maturin series but sufficient for fans of the genre.
