My Reflections: Wicked, is a quaint tourist town set in Massachusetts. One of its main attractions the Wicked Woods, is a large area of forest so large and dense that those who’ve lived in Wicked most of their lives haven’t seen the heart of it. In fact, most seem to avoid the woods, there’s something not quite right about them—something inherently creepy and almost, well—Wicked.
Sixteen year old Briony has lost her family to those woods, both her parents and her little brother Jake. She would have been with them had she not been insistent on going to cheerleading camp rather than a family vacation. Now, Briony is staying with her Aunt Sophie at the Edge Inn Bed & Breakfast which is at the very edge of the Wicked Woods; the very same woods where Briony lost her family and Aunt Sophie lost her husband, Briony’s Uncle Pete, in the same incident. Their bodies were never recovered. It has been about a month when the story starts and Briony is doing her best to control her grief and not lose hope that maybe, just maybe—her family is still out there.
Briony meets new friends and enemies in the short time she has been in Wicked. Among those is Fallon, a gorgeous blue-eyed blonde who is sweet and shy and Kevin, also gorgeous but where Fallon is light and shy, Kevin is dark and nowhere near shy!

After a few Wicked incidences occur, Aunt Sophie tells Briony that she is a member of The Wicked Woods Preservation Society. A society that keeps the member’s and tourist’s of Wicked safe. Safe from what you ask? Well, if I tell you it will ruin the book and I so don’t want to do that! What I will say is this: there is another population living in Wicked Woods-one that exists solely to decrease the population of Wicked proper and all that visit it. The things that go bump in the night couldn’t be truer in the town of Wicked and if you ever visit there---wear a crucifix, preferably one of silver.

Summary: The Wicked Woods is mysterious, suspenseful and most of all, downright scary! After reading The Wicked Woods I found that it left me wanting more! More of the town of Wicked and more of the Wicked Woods and what hides inside its deepest recesses! But most of all, I want to read more of what happens to Briony, her friends, her family and her enemies!
Kailin Gow has created the most realistic heroine-Briony has the same insecurities, fears and doubts that all young women have but the message she sends is this: be true to yourself and others, do what you know in your heart is right and rely on your inner instincts. I think that most of us can relate to Briony at a base level which makes her an instant ‘friend’ and someone we root for throughout the book. She is, after all, one of us.

I love Wicked Woods! From the start, you get the sense Wicked Woods is crawling with creatures you don't want meet. Briony's parents and little brother had disappeared in the woods, so it is ironic she ends up living with her eccentric great Aunt Sophie in a bed and breakfast at the edge of the woods. The town of Wicked Woods seem so real. Briony is a heroine who is brave, sexy, smart, and even has a sense of wry humor. Okay, I'm a fan of Kailin Gow, I preference this review with that statement because I want you to know I enjoy her Bitter Frost series. I actually enjoyed this book. However, the impending "but"...

This was such a captivating story that anyone can enjoy. The writing is smooth and easy to follow along. This is my first read by Kailin Gow and I must say that I really enjoyed this story so much more than I imagined I would.

I seem to have a intense fascination with this author, Kailin Gow. I really enjoy her writing style. This is a YA , horror series... but tends to veer I believe toward a more adult audience. I had instance's of a laugh out loud moment. I think there is a great story here with many twists... :)

This book has a feel of such books as : Twilight, Shiver, movies : Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Supernatural. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The story didn't really seem to flow well, there wasn't any real character development and I wasn't a real big fan of Briony. This new series from Gow is spectacular. Gow really develops Briony as a full character. After losing her parents and little brother in the most bizarre way, Briony goes to live in the very place they disappear. Wicked Woods is spooky and unexplored. Ok. Im gonna be honest here. I think the author should take the time to do character and world building rather than writing so many short books all at the same time.
I mean I can't recall a physical description for aunt Sophie and the only descriptions we get for the two two 'love interests' is that they're hot or handsome. The MC briony or whatever the hell her name is interchangably moves between both like its nothing. I hate wasting my precious eyesight on books that have no depth.

This was yet another fast and easy read for me. This doesn't come as much of a surprise to me though as Kailin Gow never seems to disappoint. Wicked is filled with things that you don't want to run into day or night. Though I didn't find it overly horrifying there was definitely a certain creep factor that lay within the pages. I mean living at the edge of the woods where your entire family disappeared holds a certain amount of creep to it.

I mean living at the edge of the woods where your entire family disappeared holds a certain amount of creep to it.

The story itself is both predictable and not. I know confusing right but there are things that you see coming but there are a few things that really did surprise me. The town was vivid and easy to see and become a part of and love. Though the people are most oblivious to what goes on around them, I guess it is a case of people see and believe what they want to. This made me want to pull my hair out a few times but I did kind of learn ignorance is bliss at times.

Briony herself is a dream. She is strong, determined and is willing to do what she feels is right. She has lost her family but not her way and although to start she's a little freaked and panicked, there is still something about her that you can't help but feel drawn to. Maybe it's the fact that she has been thrown into a completely different world from what he is used to yet she still pushes on. Not only that but the fall from queen bee of the school gives her some startling revelations. At this point she became more human, more relatable. Time and time again Briony grew and developed and this is only the first book so I am excited to see how much further she will develope.

The romance is going to be a love or hate thing I think for many. There is definitely the makings of a triangle. First there is Fallon he's sweet and genuinely seems to care for Briony but their relationship felt like a friendship. Well it did to start but then it seemed to hit a fast forward button and they were saying the "L" word. I was baffled but accepted what was until Fallon runs off. Then Kevin steps in and though Briony is a little more hesitant with him. The passion and tension that goes on between these two I much more desirable. Both of these guys hold secrets and both want Briony but I am routing for Kevin.

I am looking forward to picking up book 2 now and getting more Wicked. Kailin Gow has created another fun read and group of characters that I want to follow. Not to mention the action that happened all in the last half and the ending that seriously left me in wanting! That is a common problem I have when it comes to Kailin, I always seem to want more. The up side is that I have Shimmer on my shelf an will soon be tearing into it!(less)

Hmm... the two supporting friends Maisy and Steve could have kept me more entertained though and Claire and Tracey was a bit flat, Pepper who has a name like that? But those are all minor details that since those characters didn't make to much of an appearance in the story didn't really seem to bother me that much.

They made you wonder but not too. Come to think of it Gow could have done more with the characters of Kevin and Fallon and when I found out that F was a vampire I thought this was going to turn into a Twilight sort of thing but just with a younger version of Bella that is a slyer which would had been a-ok in my book! Hmm what else should I mention? *thinking* O h yes I love how Gow left the ending all good cliff hangerish. And I say good cliff hanger because I have read some books that left you with bad cliff hangers that made you want to go find the author and punch them in the face. *getting mad just thinking about it*.

Now since I liked this book so much and possibly can't think of anything else to rambel about then here it comes my personal rating system! *yea!* *throwing confeti right now* For the characters I'm going to give a 6 out of 10 , why? Because even though the side characters weren't that interesting Gow focused her attention on the main characters(ones that made more than maybe a sometime appearance) and I think that's what really matters. The plot a 9 out of 10, why? Because the whole MC becoming a slyer thing was cool and unexpected. the setting/scenery a 10( wow no one has received that from me before!), why? Because the description of the differnet scenes and just the name of the town alone creepied the sh*t out of me. And finally the overall experience a 9. And oh yes I will be reading what's next to come and any other Kailin Gow stuff I can get my ands on! Kailin Gow if you every read this you just made yourself another fan!

I bought this ebook cause it was cheap. Oh boy. That should have been a warning. I'll be honest, I got about 20% and just stopped. I am not a glutton for torture.
What bugged me at first was the writing style, it was very formal, awkward and stiff. There was one line that was '"Get the door" And Briony did so.' I mean... REALLY?! And I kept thinking as I read descriptions or lack thereof of the book was "show, not tell". How elementary is that?

The first thing my mom noticed about Wicked Woods was the typo on the back..."The woods at the edge of Aunt Sophie's inn is filled with secrets and inhabitants both seductive and deadly." Did you catch it? 'The woods...is filled with secrets...'. I'm pretty sure 'is' should be changed to 'are'. *shakes head* Wow this book irritated me so much that I was actually reduced to nitpicking about insignificant grammatical errors on the freakin...more The first thing I noticed about Wicked Woods was the cover. I've read several other of Kailin Gow's books and while none of them especially blew me away, I really enjoy the stories and the worlds that she creates. At first when I started reading her books, the many typos annoyed the hell out of me, but soon I sort of looked past them and tried to enjoy the story as best I could. Seriously though, someone needs to fire her editor or something because whoever proofreads her books does a shoddy job.

The main character, Briony, whose name sounds awfully similar to Breena from Miss Gow's Frost Series, is very much a Mary Sue (as are all of her female protagonists might I add) and I never really liked her. On countless occasions, Briony is told that she is beyond pretty and she knows it too. How shallow! And isn't it a surprise that she has two boys who fall head over heels for her and the only reason Briony feels any attraction to them at all, from what I can tell, is because they are both undeniably hot? No actually, I'm not really surprised at all. Initiate hair pulling now!

I even read the author's review of her own book: "So, this is where I give the Wicked Woods series a 5 because I know where this story is going, and trust me, it is not Twilight-based nor is it Buffy-based. It is something entirely different." (You can read the rest of it here if you so desire). [EDIT: I just recently noticed that she edited her review down to exclude the above quote. Not sure when that happened, but I guess that means she read my review.]

And after reading that, I couldn't help but notice similarities to Buffy and Twilight, and so in a way, reading Kailin Gow's own review kind of ruined the story for me. Now, I don't mind it when authors review or rate their own books, but if your book really isn't "Twilight or Buffy-based" then your book should speak for itself. You shouldn't have to go out of your way to assure your readers what your book is or is not. The readers should be able to form their own opinions about your work.

I'm not sure if I'll be continuing this particular series or not. I'm quite positive that the countless number of other books that are currently sitting in my 'to-read' shelf would be much better. Enjoy at your own risk! And also, don't make the same mistake as I did of purchasing the overpriced paperback edition. It's hardly worth the time or money.(less)

I was a bit worried to read Wicked Woods, as I was not a fan of the previous book I read by Kailin Gow. However, the book kept grabbing my attention until I finally decided to sit down and read it. Once I started, my worries subsided as I was pulled into Gow’s delicious world of Wicked, but I soon started noticing some issues that I feared would make an appearance in yet another Kailin Gow novel. Let me explain.

Once I started, my worries subsided as I was pulled into Gow’s delicious world of Wicked, but I soon started noticing some issues that I feared would make an appearance in yet another Kailin Gow novel. Let me explain.

Briony, after the death of her family, moves in with her great aunt Sophie, and soon learns that Sophie is a hunter of dark and dangerous creatures that lurk around the Wicked woods. Briony discovers that these creatures were likely the ones who killed her family, so she is more than eager to fight them. Throw in some classic high school drama, a deadly love triangle, and a life even the greatest insomniac would struggle to handle, and you get Wicked Woods.

Though I found myself constantly comparing Wicked Woods to other books I have read, I did find it to be an exciting and enjoyable novel. There were some plot points I found unnecessary, but overall I found it to be the promising series that teens will love to sink their teeth into.

Kailin Gow’s writing has always been my biggest issue with her books. I find her sentence structure very strange, and I have noticed that her sentences seem to be long and far from tight. There were also many spelling and grammar issues throughout the book, but I tried my best to ignore them so I could better enjoy the story. I think overall that Gow’s books could be much better if there was more editing done on them.

Briony was a strong main character that certainly handled things a lot stronger than I would be able to. Her life is so hectic, but she doesn’t let that weigh her down. I found Briony to be a little less dimensional than I would want her to be, but hopefully she grows throughout the series. The supporting characters fit their roles perfectly, and some even went beyond that to be relatable and enjoyable characters. The dialog between the cast of characters was a bit strange and unbelievable for me, but again I tried to over look that.

Wicked Woods is a dark and dangerous tale that many fans of young adult urban fantasy are sure to enjoy. It is not without its share of faults, but I am excited to see where the story goes throughout the next installments of the series. (less)

Best series yet! Huge props to Kailin! I have been waiting for Wicked Woods since late spring 2010. So yes, I had quite a wait! I must say it was well worth it!

Briony recently lost her parents and younger brother along with her uncle. Sadly, this all happened at the same time. They all seem to have disappeared in the woods. Nobody has been able to find them. No trace. No signs. No clues. Just.....gone.

I can't figure out why this author has won so many awards. Plainly, the people who gave those awards somehow missed reading really good fantasy.

I would just like to say QUANTITY is NOT QUALITY. 80 books don't mean much if the content is just so-so.

I read the first two books of this series, just to be fair. However, I still feel that this is just too "pulp fiction". Vampires, werewolves, love triangle. Please, don't you have more imagination? Not going on my favorite author list!

I'm not really into paranormal novel actually. But I thought to gave it a try. So I have to say that this was my very first YA novel.
At first I thought this book's a bit boring, the story was cliche and the part when Briony found out about vampires didn't quiet convincing.
I think the best part or at least part when things got started to interesting was when Fallon and Kevin started to fight and suddenly Pietre and other vampires showed up.

So, I could not give this more than a 3 because I found too many typos. The story is not bad, it is pretty entertaining. The characters are interesting, but if I find typos in a book, I get super distracted and it takes away from the story.
Overall, it was a decent read, not the best supernatural story I have ever read, but not bad either.

I hate to give books one star. I contemplated giving it 2, but I couldn't in good conscience do that. I got about halfway through the book and I just had to stop. It was soooo bad. I tried to keep reading, I really did, because I always like to finish what I start, but I just couldn't. Let me explain.

quick read.. predictable story line .. main character met with vamps too soon and had poor reaction to whole "i want to train u to be my replacment" plot. also too buffy the vamp slayer at times. may still give book 2 a shot to see if the love triangle improves things

2 1/2 stars. Ok, nothing spectacular. There are lots of typos and the story was just shallow. There was the insta-love thing, and a main character that seemed pretty fickle. It ends in a major cliff hanger so you have to read the next book if you care at all about the characters. I don't mind cliff hangers, but this one feels like the book is just cut off somewhere in the middle of the story just so it can force you into buying another book. I'm very unimpressed so far. I don't know whether it's the author or a translator, but in the first ten chapters of the book, I've run across so many grammatical errors that I've stopped counting. For a cut-rate Buffy, the writing should at least be at a sixth-grade level, which this is not.

I'd give this book 2.5 star's because to be fair YA is really not my thing. I just happened to read the blurb and thought that it sounded interesting, but there really isn't anything new here; just more vampires and werewolves done in the same ol' way.

This was another great buy on my Kindle. The book was only 1.99 so if it's ok it's still a good deal, but this was a really good book. I read it in a day and bought the 2ed book the day after. A great book at an even greater price.

The writing is pretty awkward and the story is nothing new. I was a little drawn in so I may read the sequel, but I am not sure how much more I will read if it doesn't get better. I am glad I got this for free.

Wasn't impressed with the writing or the characters. I also think that whoever published this book should be ashamed at the shoddy editing. Seriously, I was angry that I actually paid money for this book.
