I'm a fan of the Harry Potter series, and I decided to re-read books 1-6 in anticipation of the final book. Deathly Hallows now behind me, my opinion remains steadfastly strong. Mostly, I appreciate the series because I believe that J. K. Rowling has done more for literacy around the world than any politician or legislature. She has inspired kids (and adults) to read, and little is more valuable in education than that.

Selesai juga tugas gw baca Harry Potter yang terakhir. Gw menganggap membaca Potter cuma tugas, sebagaimana gw rasa Rowling juga cuma menyelesaikan tugasnya menulis buku terakhir Potter.
Rada-rada berlebihan kali yaa, kalo Rowling kita bandingkan dengan Eiji Yoshikawa lewat Mushashi (yang juga terdiri dari 7 buku). Ato malah dengan Tetralogi Pramoedya. Obviously, I didn't read "all of them" in August '01 but this seemed more expeditious than adding all seven individually. Em and I read through whatever number was current right away and then each subsequent book in the day or two after they were released. All 7 were read aloud together.

I LOVE ALL OF THESE BOOKS! i was brought into the harry potter world after the second book came out. i enjoyed every book each in it's own way. i loved the first book because it helped me believe in magic again like i did when i was little. i liked the second book because i got to see hermoine grow as a stronger witch. i loved the third one because harry started to really step into his role and there was so much happening. it was an exciting book.i was introduced to dementors, azkaban, escape...more

I read the first book for my Children's Literature class at BYU when it first came out. Well, of course I was hooked and had to read the rest of the series each time a new book came out.
I do have to say I was disappointed in the language in the last book. I really think swearing is unnecessary and I'm sad that she included it in a children's book. I know people will argue that, Rowling "didn't write that last book for children" and that the books were supposed to matur...more

OK, let's see. Erin turned me on to the series right after we graduated high school. She said it would be good, she was right. I hate it when she's right.
I finished the book in England and bought book two there and immediately noticed that the American book cover art is eleventy billion times better than Britain's. Which I find odd, don't you?
Book three came out that summer. Then we waited for Book four and it started to get a little annoying because now everyone was reading it, but oh well...more

A quick, entertaining read, but without much intellectual content. These books are catchy... but you can't say much more than that about them. Some of the later books are weighed down by fluff and filler, but they're worth borrowing from someone and taking a cursory glance at. A short breakdown:
Book 1. A cute story with a nice balance between the high stakes of good and evil and 6th grade drama.
Book 2. My least favorite of the series.

Right before the last installment came out, I went to the public library and checked out the first book in the series, and didn't stop until I had closed the final one. It took me about two and a half months, but I read the whole series from start to finish.

Book 1 - I planned to read a chapter a day, but I got hooked and finished it by sundown. Immediately started hunting for a copy of Book 2.
Book 2 - Kind of dark; not one of my favorites.
Book 3 - This was my favorite one until 6 and 7 came along. I'm still impressed that Rowlings transformed a villain into a hero through a few pages of conversation. By the end of that chapter, I wanted to hug someone I previously feared.

people who can turn off their booksnobbiness
whoever hasn't read these by now just won't read them, but initally i refused until a girlfriend convinced me. you can't read them for the reasons you normally read, or at least i can't. it's best to approach them with childhood nostalgia, as a book you loved when you were a kid and are rereading, even though you didn't.

Honestly, I enjoyed reading these--in the same way I occasionally enjoy binging on chocolates. J. K. Rowling is good at creating plots full of unexpected twists, and she even manages to tie up her series in neat, nearly Christian values.

I'm an action/adventure nut, so the Harry Potter books were an easy sell. But beyond giving me a quick fix of adventure, I'm genuinely pleased with the focus on ethics and bravery.
In an age where we're taught not to get involved, J.K. Rowling says straightup that if you're not willing to lay down your life for your friends, you're one of the bad guys.

Great storytelling both for adults and kids! The characters are great, the story sounds familiar yet refreshingly different, and the world J.K. Rowling creates is simply amazing. I also loved how the author teaches the readers (young and old) about how it's okay to be different (moreover, how it's a good thing and important to stand out and stand for the things you believe in), and I also think that the parabole for racism (muggles vs. pure-bloods) carries an important message for all. I don't actually have them in a set - I bought them consecutively as they came out. I just put this because I really don't want to add all of them.

I am currently re-reading the series backwards. I felt that the 7th book contained most of the answers and explanations behind the history of Harry Potter's own story, particularly the story of Dumbledore, Snape, and his parents. With that in mind, as I go back in reverse, small details have more significance. J.K. Rowling leaves no stone unturned (and if there are still any questions, you can find answers on wikipedia)! I only started reading Harry Potter because I spranged my ankle playing tennis, and couldn't drive back to my apartment. I was stuck at my mother's house, and couldn't handle the day-time talk shows. The only book I could find that I hadn't already read in the house was my teenage sister's Harry Potter book. From there I was hooked! At first I was a bit embarassed that I was reading a "children's book", but became less so when I looked around my gym filled with adult professionals....more

I was working in the Youth Services Department of our public library during the summer of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". It was obviously a very popular topic around the library. I had never read the books before, and was urged to do so by the head of the children's department. When I picked up the first book I was shocked. Even though my Grandfather refers to Harry Potter as “rubbish,” I think the books are anything but that. JK Rowling’s writing is gripping and one can’t help but love and invest themselves into the characters she creates over the seven book series. I would venture to say that many would actually admit to being disappointed that the characters, places and magic are fictitious – honestly, I would definitely be one of them. I was going to list them all seperately since I liked some more than others but I figured that if your going to read one, you'll probably read the rest. Overall I really enjoyed this series from beginning to end.
If you have never read a book like this (or at least not as an adult), the simplicity of some of the characters can be difficult to believe and enjoy. Even knowing that the series is written for kids I sometimes found myself rolling my eyes at the stupidity of the heros on occasion...more
