I got into an argument the other day with an articulate 17 year old Harry Potter fan - let's call him D - who wanted to know why I was being so nasty in my review of Deathly Hallows. What was wrong with it? I offered various structural criticisms: the ending is abrupt and unconvincing, the subplot with the Horcruxes has not been adequately foreshadowed in the earlier volumes, and the book as a whole is overlong and boring. D expressed surprise that I could call Deathly Hallows boring, when I'd g...more

I know I have specific reviews for each of the books, but I just wanted to add a general review, especially for those wondering what people, especially adults, see in Harry Potter. When my brother was in junior high, he lent me his copies of books 1-4. Maybe it was because I was seeing the story through his eyes or that I wasn't expecting much from children's literature but I was surprised to find how entertaining and well written these books were. They had that "it" factor where you can't put i...more

This is a review for the HP series as a whole, not this particular boxset.

Overall, I loved the series. The biggest thing for me was the world Rowling created and all the imagination that went into it. Strip away the world and you've got a fairly good storyline/mystery and some good characters. But it is the fantasy world that elevates this series for me. I remember reading the first book and thinking, "Rowling presents a new invention on almost every page!" Imagine how long a list would be of al...more

I've resisted writing reviews for these books for a while now, because it sort of seems like a pointless effort. Everyone knows these books, and there doesn't seem to be anything more to say about them. But then I figured, why not add my two cents? So here we go:

I am a member of what I'll call "the Harry Potter generation" - ie, I was a kid when these books first came out, and I've literally grown up with the series. My best friend in elementary school gave me Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Sto...more

There are countless reviews about the HP book out there, so I'll try to be brief. After all, who hasn't read at least some of the books or seen the movies?

I began to read the books after watching the first movie because I loved it..and well, why deny it? Because everybody else was doing so. But I was ten years old and I had nothing to compare it with. After reading Harry Potter, I realized how different they are. The movies are OK, entertaining but nothing more. They lack the magic of the books....more

At last.
It's been fourteen years, but I think I have finally acquired enough distance to be able to review these books in an honest way:

They are utterly flawed, but utterly enjoyable.

The books carried me through an incredibly trying time in my life and for years I wasn't able to hear any valid critique about either the writing, the messy way in which certain plot threads were resolved etceteras.
But I knew they weren't perfect, I knew they weren't even all that orginal, I knew they were hyped b...more

I am an absolute Harry Potter fan. I picked up the series when I was in college and was blown away by this mesmerizing and page-turning "children's book". J.K. Rowling is an absolute genius. I've always had an active imagination, and this world was so easy to enter. In fact, the world Rowling creates in Harry Potter is so real that I often find myself - and this is scary to admit - believing I can do magic. (Seriously, I once tried the Accio spell on my cell phone and was annoyed when I realized...more

I read the first book for my Children's Literature class at BYU when it first came out. Well, of course I was hooked and had to read the rest of the series each time a new book came out.
I do have to say I was disappointed in the language in the last book. I really think swearing is unnecessary and I'm sad that she included it in a children's book. I know people will argue that, Rowling "didn't write that last book for children" and that the books were supposed to mature with her audience, but...more

I LOVE ALL OF THESE BOOKS! i was brought into the harry potter world after the second book came out. i enjoyed every book each in it's own way. i loved the first book because it helped me believe in magic again like i did when i was little. i liked the second book because i got to see hermoine grow as a stronger witch. i loved the third one because harry started to really step into his role and there was so much happening. it was an exciting book.i was introduced to dementors, azkaban, escaped c...more

Right before the last installment came out, I went to the public library and checked out the first book in the series, and didn't stop until I had closed the final one. It took me about two and a half months, but I read the whole series from start to finish.

Say what you will about the story, the characters, the writing, but from my experience in child care over the last five years, I can assure you that it is not all too common to see a child toting a book under their arm, waiting for three minu...more

Sigh...

I've finally added Harry to my list. Though many of my friends here at GoodReads have given it very high marks, it simply didn't move me. Perhaps, if I had come to the books when I was 8 or 10, I'd be more impressed (though my reading was pretty sophisticated even then -- I was devouring The Silmarillion at 11). And I would (and do) give the last few volumes 3 stars -- Harry was getting older and more interesting -- but I didn't find anything particularly amazing or innovative about the c...more

I'm way late to the party on this one. Perhaps one of the last people on earth to read about Harry, I decided to start. It took me about 6 weeks (would have been less had I not had to take care of 2 adorable short people in that time) but I have finished the series.

I was reluctant for so long. Wizardry? Um, no thank you. Totally not my cup of tea. But this year I have a student whose passion for Potter is contagious, and I'm happy to say how wrong I was.

I don't 100% understand the obsession - at...more

The reading of this series is done by Jim Dale. He is a fantastic reader in this series. You are transported to the world of Hogwarts through his character voices and beautiful accents.

I love these stories anyway, and this is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to.

Ok.. I am putting a series review as opposed to an individual story review.

I found this to be a fascinating series.

Its clear once you close the cover on the final tome, that the author had the entire story mapped out before she began to write the first novel.

The characters are complete, complex and compelling.. The wizarding world setting takes a back seat to the larger themes of honesty, integrity, loyalty, and to paraphrase a wonderful character, doing what is right, not what is easy.

I think...more

I'm a fan of the Harry Potter series, and I decided to re-read books 1-6 in anticipation of the final book. Deathly Hallows now behind me, my opinion remains steadfastly strong. Mostly, I appreciate the series because I believe that J. K. Rowling has done more for literacy around the world than any politician or legislature. She has inspired kids (and adults) to read, and little is more valuable in education than that.

But further, Rowling has created a body of work whose architecture withstands...more

started reading late 7/30/11, 7/31/11 UK time and finished reading 10/4/11, taking much longer than I’d expected, but thoroughly enjoying the experience, and more convinced than ever that this is a brilliantly told story

I have read the books AND listened to them on CD. Here's the story of how I became a fan of HP:

I am an avid reader and years ago, when the Harry Potter books first came to the U.S. and caused such a sensation, I resisted reading them. I'm not a big fan of fantasy lit, so I thought that reading about wizards and such was not for me. It was as a mother of two cranky children that I ended up trying the books, and I am SO glad that I did not end up missing out on this brilliant and wonderful series...more

OK, let's see. Erin turned me on to the series right after we graduated high school. She said it would be good, she was right. I hate it when she's right.
I finished the book in England and bought book two there and immediately noticed that the American book cover art is eleventy billion times better than Britain's. Which I find odd, don't you?
Book three came out that summer. Then we waited for Book four and it started to get a little annoying because now everyone was reading it, but oh well. Go...more

This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SERIES! These books are nothing short of fantastic for adults as well as children. J.K. Rowling's style of writing is completely mesmerizing. It's so easy - and so enjoyable to get lost in the world that she's created. I have found that people who don't like or approve of these books are always the same people who haven't actually read any of them through. If you read them, you will find that they are in fact very endearing as well as inspiring. If you've only seen t...more

I have read all of these books. I like the series. It got a little more dark and a little more adult as it went on.

The first book for me was about 3 misfits in a new school:
the minority student: Hermeinie, muggle parents
The poor student: Ron, gets by as best he can
Mysterious past, has little background and not much experience: Harry

The series is not about teaching witchcraft and spells and dependancy on the occult. Its about friendship and finding out where you fit into the society you live in....more

Overall, these are one of the best book I ever read. Rich of fantasy, great story yet very detail in terms of culture and characteristic of everyone involved. And who would ever guess - on recent interview, J.K. Rowling said that she knew all along that for her Harry's stories always related/inspired by Christianity.

Spoiler:
The last book, when Harry got killed by Voldermort and met professor Dumbledore in the after life. After THE conversation, Harry returned to Hogwarts to save the world.

Review

Harry Potter returns again for his third year at Hogwarts. On his
return he learns of a murderer and mad-man named Sirius Black who has
escaped from the wizard prison of Azkaban. Harry is told that Black was
one of Voldemort's most loyal followers and that the crowning
expression of loyalty to the fallen Dark Lord would be to kill Harry
Potter. Thus Harry is surrounded by protections at Hogwarts, including
the wise council of the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher,
Professor Lu
