I was pretty excited to find this collected version of the Harry Potter books on here, an audiobook collection read by Jim Dale. I've consumed the Harry Potter series several times now -- first as books, and then as audiobooks. If you saw me on the S.F. MUNI at any point between something like September of 2007 and January of 2008, wearing headphones, this was what was going through my head. I've done my best not to break into tears in public spaces during key emotional moments in the reading, ...more

I'm a fan of the Harry Potter series, and I decided to re-read books 1-6 in anticipation of the final book. Deathly Hallows now behind me, my opinion remains steadfastly strong. Mostly, I appreciate the series because I believe that J. K. Rowling has done more for literacy around the world than any politician or legislature. She has inspired kids (and adults) to read, and little is more valuable in education than that.

But further, Rowling has created a body of work whose architectu...more

Obviously, I didn't read "all of them" in August '01 but this seemed more expeditious than adding all seven individually. Em and I read through whatever number was current right away and then each subsequent book in the day or two after they were released. All 7 were read aloud together.

I'd tried reading HP1 when it first came out. My little brother was of an age to have heard of them right at the beginning of the craze from his school mates so the books where floating around...more

I LOVE ALL OF THESE BOOKS! i was brought into the harry potter world after the second book came out. i enjoyed every book each in it's own way. i loved the first book because it helped me believe in magic again like i did when i was little. i liked the second book because i got to see hermoine grow as a stronger witch. i loved the third one because harry started to really step into his role and there was so much happening. it was an exciting book.i was introduced to dementors, azkaban, escape...more

I read the first book for my Children's Literature class at BYU when it first came out. Well, of course I was hooked and had to read the rest of the series each time a new book came out.
I do have to say I was disappointed in the language in the last book. I really think swearing is unnecessary and I'm sad that she included it in a children's book. I know people will argue that, Rowling "didn't write that last book for children" and that the books were supposed to matur...more

OK, let's see. Erin turned me on to the series right after we graduated high school. She said it would be good, she was right. I hate it when she's right.
I finished the book in England and bought book two there and immediately noticed that the American book cover art is eleventy billion times better than Britain's. Which I find odd, don't you?
Book three came out that summer. Then we waited for Book four and it started to get a little annoying because now everyone was reading it, but oh well...more

A quick, entertaining read, but without much intellectual content. These books are catchy... but you can't say much more than that about them. Some of the later books are weighed down by fluff and filler, but they're worth borrowing from someone and taking a cursory glance at. A short breakdown:

Book 1. A cute story with a nice balance between the high stakes of good and evil and 6th grade drama.
Book 2. My least favorite of the series.
Book 3. My favorite of the series. If you have ...more

Right before the last installment came out, I went to the public library and checked out the first book in the series, and didn't stop until I had closed the final one. It took me about two and a half months, but I read the whole series from start to finish.

Say what you will about the story, the characters, the writing, but from my experience in child care over the last five years, I can assure you that it is not all too common to see a child toting a book under their arm, waiting for three ...more

Book 1 - I planned to read a chapter a day, but I got hooked and finished it by sundown. Immediately started hunting for a copy of Book 2.

Book 2 - Kind of dark; not one of my favorites.

Book 3 - This was my favorite one until 6 and 7 came along. I'm still impressed that Rowlings transformed a villain into a hero through a few pages of conversation. By the end of that chapter, I wanted to hug someone I previously feared.

Book 4 - A fun read, but it annoyed me that just because Harry ...more

Yep. There they are. I won't bother writing a summery, because pretty much half the planet has read this series, but I will give my oppinion.

JK Rowling has some interesting ideas about right and wrong, some of which I agree with and some of which I disagree.

Because the main characters are witches and wizards, a lot of parents have decided not to allow their children to read the books. The main arguement being that they don't want to encourage sorcery among children, I have to agree to...more

whoever hasn't read these by now just won't read them, but initally i refused until a girlfriend convinced me. you can't read them for the reasons you normally read, or at least i can't. it's best to approach them with childhood nostalgia, as a book you loved when you were a kid and are rereading, even though you didn't.

they're charming and sweet sometimes, and comparatively dark at others, but the charm is why to read them. the plots are well constructed, so that experienced readers don't ...more

Hmmm... The boy who would be king... Wait wrong book. Ok, so seriously, Harry Potter was entertaining "most" of the time, but I had some major problems with the storyline and being a bit to obvious at times. HUGE SPOILER WARNING BELOW!!!!

So I think it was the 5th book or so and I had completely figured out the entire ending of the book. Maybe it was the 4th book, I dont remember. My wife was reading and I blurted out - so Harry and the guy the cant say the name of are like fused ...more

Honestly, I enjoyed reading these--in the same way I occasionally enjoy binging on chocolates. J. K. Rowling is good at creating plots full of unexpected twists, and she even manages to tie up her series in neat, nearly Christian values.

As a whole, the series seems like a jumble of action without much thought to foreshadowing, character development, or consistency of theme. One gets the feeling that Rowling created each book on the fly, leaving the series with obvious inconsistencies and u...more

Well, being part of the Harry Potter generation, I feel it would be a bit cruel to not include these books into my collection. I first picked up the series when I was in the 5th grade and then finished the series just after my senior year of high school. So as you can tell, the most influential time of my life was during the reign of Harry. Yes, I did cry when it was all over and done with. These books taught me about the most popular theme in any entertainment. This is the power of love. Now th...more

I'm an action/adventure nut, so the Harry Potter books were an easy sell. But beyond giving me a quick fix of adventure, I'm genuinely pleased with the focus on ethics and bravery.

In an age where we're taught not to get involved, J.K. Rowling says straightup that if you're not willing to lay down your life for your friends, you're one of the bad guys.

I think bravery is underplayed these days, even cast as reckless. And I believe that's a terrible terrible mistake that serves to isolate u...more

Great storytelling both for adults and kids! The characters are great, the story sounds familiar yet refreshingly different, and the world J.K. Rowling creates is simply amazing. I also loved how the author teaches the readers (young and old) about how it's okay to be different (moreover, how it's a good thing and important to stand out and stand for the things you believe in), and I also think that the parabole for racism (muggles vs. pure-bloods) carries an important message for all. I don't actually have them in a set - I bought them consecutively as they came out. I just put this because I really don't want to add all of them.

For my actual two cents on the books, they were alright. [waits for gasps]. When I was younger and reading the first ones, it got to the point where, in my nerdiness, instead of reading comic books with my cereal before school, I'd just pick up a random HP book and start in the middle.

Now that I'm older and have had the chance to delve into some ...more

Sigh...

I've finally added Harry to my list. Though many of my friends here at GoodReads have given it very high marks, it simply didn't move me. Perhaps, if I had come to the books when I was 8 or 10, I'd be more impressed (though my reading was pretty sophisticated even then -- I was devouring The Silmarillion at 11). And I would (and do) give the last few volumes 3 stars -- Harry was getting older and more interesting -- but I didn't find anything particularly amazing or innovative about t...more
