Africa meets London in this fashion fairy tale. Four young girls set out to change the world one outfit at a time.
Narrator Nonie, is obsessed with fashion. Jenny has a part in a movie, but she isn’t really into that scene. Edie is a nerdy know-it-all. And then there’s Crow. She is a refugee from Uganda who can’t read and she barely ever speaks. Crow has a special talent though. She can design and create the most amazing high fashion outfits.

"Sequins, Secrets, and Silver Linings" is the official Canadian/American title for this novel.

"Nonie's a freak for fashion. Eco-conscious Edie blogs to save the world--and get into Harvard. Starter-starlet Jenny just landed a small part in a big Hollywood blockbuster. But when these trendy London besties meet a Ugandan refugee girl named Crow, sketching a dress at the V&A Museum, their worldview gets an extreme makeover. If you only have time to read one novel this week, make it Threads. It’s been so long since I read a debut novel that made me smile (and cry) as much as this one. Threads won The Times Children’s Writing Competition last year and I’m so glad it did, it really deserves it.
Threads is the story of three best friends, teenagers Nonie, Edie and Jenny who all live in London. By chance they meet Crow, a young African refugee who doesn’t like to talk but lives for fashion. Eventually, More...

When I saw this cover, I wanted to read this book,it looked like so much fun. (yes I liked a pink cover. Don't judge me) Meg Cabot has a blurb on the book. (top left near the sneaker) Which seemed fitting because I thought it be something along the lines of Cabot's genre. Lucky me, I was right. I have really missed reading books like this, and Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings was very good. Being set in London was an added bonus.

Nonie loves fashion. She has her own style that sometimes stumps her friends and family. At the beginning of the book you get the impression that she and her mother don't have much of a relationship, but towards the end it seems they develop a mutual respect for one another. Nonie seems closest to her older brother Harry.

I grabbed an advance copy of this (I guess in Canada it will be called Silver Sequins and Silver Linings) for 'lunch break reading', expecting something quick and silly to maybe recommend to silly girls. It only took a couple chapters to realize this book was nothing like I expected! I can't wait for the next one and only hope it's not too British to take off here. Nonie and her friends are perfectly flawed and I love that big world issues are drawn into the plot in a natural rather than calcula

Despite the old saying “Never judge a book by its cover,” a lot of readers do precisely that. When I saw the cover of Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings it looked like a fluffy read that would lift my spirits on a dreary afternoon. While this novel proved to be a fun book that any fashion obsessed reader will fall in love with, it also had much more substantial messages and themes.

I really enjoyed this. I know this is something I would've read when I was younger, and as I work in a bookshop, I'll definitely be recommending it to younger readers.
Nonie and her two friends Edie and Jenny all have completely different interests, and when they meet Ugandan refugee Crow, they all manage to work together to help her, which in turn gives them a chance to do the things they love. For Nonie, its working in the fashion industry; Edie gets to work in social justice, and Jenny f More...

This was a really cute, fun book. I enjoyed the characters- their interactions are realistic and Bennett writes them well- and it made for such a quick read. It's pretty funny too, which I always enjoy.
I did feel though that the parts about Crow's past felt a bit shoehorned in, like the author wanted to make the book more "serious" in a way. It's mentioned near the beginning and then not touched again for over 100 pages. I will say though that Bennett weaved the two parts- More...

Tell me what's this book about?

I got this book from a Goodreads contest (thanks!) and was surprised at how much I liked it. It's a sweet story about three British teens who meet a young Ugandan refugee named Crow, a girl with an incredible talent for fashion. As the girls get to know their new friend's past, they want to help.
The story combines fashion drama with a well-researched take on the refugee experience. For a YA novel, it's surprisingly socially aware and doesn't use Crow as a prop - she has her own char More...

This is a horrible executed & written book. And I have to write a review on it (not only on Goodreads but somewhere else!) Yet I can't find ANY good points in the book:(
Not only was the writing inconsistent and shaky, the plot was weak, the characters flat, and the cover art turns you off.
I did not like this book at all. The only reason I gave it an extra star is because it sort of got me interested in fashion, and now I draw dresses and outfits. Unlike Crow, I've never More...

When I first saw this book in my school library about a year ago, I thought it would be another one of those whimsical fairytales where the girls live perfect lives and achieve all their dreams. But how wrong was I! So if you ever got that same first impression as me, FORGET it and read the book! I promise you won't regret it. The book is much more than just a 'fairytale'. It's about making a difference to other peoples' lives and that giving is so much better than receiving.

I knew that I was going to enjoy this book for a few reasons. Firstly, 'Threads' is published by Chicken House - this means that it has the same publisher as books by Lucy Christopher (Stolen), Rachel Ward (Numbers) and Sharon Dogar (Waves). I have never read a book published by Chicken House that I have not enjoyed, so things were clearly looking good! Sophia Bennett, the author of 'Threads', won the '2009 Times/Chicken House Children's Fiction Competition' with this story so I knew that it had

Calling all fans of Project Runway and Top Model: this book's for you!!
When 14-year-old Londoner Nonie and her best friends discover a genius fashion designer, it's up to them to help her out. Crow's a Ugandan refugee and her family's still in Uganda, danger threatening at all times. Her father thinks she should be concentrating on "serious things", but Nonie and her besties think they can figure out a way for fashion to come to the rescue!

This is a cute book for pre teen girls. Yes it is pretty silly but also cute. One character is a fashion designer at 13, the next girl is managing her line, the third friend is in the top movie at the time and the last girl is super smart and a big humanitarian. Of course they are all friends and still doing their homework with everything else. It is innocent just silly. There is a bit too much importance put on fashion.

I checked out this book because I thought it would be fun fashion frippery, kind of a smartly written British chick-let for young teens. It was all of those things, but it managed to tackle some serious issues about refugee children as well. I definitely recommend it for anyone who likes fashion AND social issues, blended quite well into an easy read.

This book was fun to read. I was quickly swept up in a story of fashion and friendship. I think any reader who’s into clothes will enjoy the descriptions of Nonie’s outfits and Crow’s creation.
Teenagers and pre-teens who love fashion should pick this book up. I’m eager to read the future installments of the series.

This was an amazing read by Sophia Bennett! I loved everything about it and most of all the fact that it wasn't all about boys for a change which was great, because usually the young adults books focus on boys! I loved the motto less fahsion more compassion thats what this book was all about following your dreams, and ofcourse fashion! I loved the character crow and nonnie's quirky unique style~! fabulous book~~!

Super cute! Thanks to Trisha Murakami for suggesting this title to me. Love books with girls who can be friends (booo, mean girls!) with ambition. Yes, its fluffy and kind of a fairy tale, but I love fun fluff too! The London setting was an added bonus.

I found this book moderately enjoyable to read. The plot idea was really good but I found the written language too difficult and found it hard to keep track of the different storylines. I thought the characters were unusual but maybe a little unrealistic.
On the positive note, the plotline was unpredictable and I never knew what was going to happen next. The author Sophia had some great insight to what she was talking about, for example fashion, culture and education.

I did not like this at all. No character development and the writing left a lot to be desired.
