Before I start this review, I need to tell you that I was a big fan of Steven Furtick before he put a single word down on paper. I first heard him speak last September on The Nines, an online conference put on by Leadership Network...

This book is basically "The Secret" (Rhonda Byrnes) for Christians. Furtick uses Biblical examples to support the new-thought theory that one's thoughts (in this case, prayers) should focus on "impossible" wishes, and then he/she should and move toward those goals -- trusting God to handle the impossible-seeming details. Joshua is the primary Biblical example used by Furtick (hence the title: "Sun Stand Still") Furtick is an evangelical leader of a mega-church, and the primary real-life example...more
My full review can be read here at Blogging Theologically:
I wasn’t sure what to think of Steven Furtick’s Sun Stand Still when I first received it.
I’d heard a bit about Furtick, the founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Most of it had to do with numbers —Elevation has a congregation in the thousands, and its founding pastor has only just turned 30.
But I didn’t really know what he was all about. I didn’t know what he stands for and what he’s passionate about.

On the front end, I feel it's only fair to admit that when I first received this book, I was not a big fan of Steven Furtick. In my admittedly limited experience with the young megachurch pastor, I had found him to be brash, over-the-top, and borderline arrogant... not exactly qualities I look for in a preacher. Of course, I have generally found that it hasn't been an issue with whathe has said so much as howhe has said it (
this video
is a good example).

"God is great. God is good." A simple prayer. A child's prayer. But this is the building block to what author Steven Furtick calls "audacious faith" in his book *Sun Stand Still.*
The premise of his book comes from the Old Testament story of Joshua and the taking of Jericho. Joshua had faith-an "audacious faith"- and he prayed an impossible prayer that only God could answer. That is the type of prayer life we are to have as Christians.
The author uses many stories and examples in a conversation st...more

I give Sun Stand Still: What Happens When You Dare to Ask God for the Impossible by Steven Furtick 4.5 out of 5 stars. (Click the link to see a video trailer of the book).
Furtick writes winsomely and tells some incredible stories God’s faithfulness. His own story is inspiring. Throughout the book we are encouraged to believe God for the impossible and to live lives of “audacious faith.” Examples and stories abound with the story of Joshua as a backdrop. I enjoyed it - Im always confused by the you have to take action on one page and the you have to trust God with all of your heart on the other page though.
Which one is it? Do I trust God with all of my heart
Or do I take action?
Some say do both - but why wouldnt I wait to hear what God tells me to do before I move? Furtick seems to speak against stopping and praying saying we should push and pray - without Gods direction where am I pushing to?
I guess he just feels that no matter what his decision...more

The most difficult thing about writing a Christian self-help book is not the information. It's the inspiration.
In Sun Stand Still (fantastic title), Furtick encourages us to be people who pray audacious prayers, expect God to do audacious things, and live audacious lives as a result.
And that's pretty much the whole book.
I agree with this focus a LOT. As Christians we need to be doing far more audacious things, living far more unexpected lives. And there was nothing in the book that I really dis...more

Sun Stand Still is a book by Steven Furtick, the lead pastor of Elevation Church. Elevation Church is a church that is established in Charlotte, North Carolina. There are several campus, as well as “extension” sites, which are sites that meet outside of Charlotte and conduct their own services. I’m a part of an extension site at my college, so I decided I should probably read the book. For more information on Elevation, check out their website! They do a lot of amazing things, and their impact i...more
So I was really excited and so looking forward to this book to boost me on my way to an amazing prayer life. It was not what I was expecting. Most of the book was the authors backstory of getting his church going, and it's an inspiring backstory but this book read more like an autobiography. If I didn't have semiknowledge of Furtick and Elevation Church this read may have been drab drab drab and almost was anyway. The high point of the book were the quick few references to other people who had t...more
Sun Stand Still is about obtaining and building an audacious faith and believing that God is able to do all things. When we have faith that God can still do the impossible in our lives we stop fearing and worrying about the unknown. Steven Furtick explained that he prayed bold prayers to God in believing that he would answer them. He prayed that he would lead many people to Christ and transformation would occur in their lives. He decided to move to North Carolina with seven other families. They...more
This rating is based on the experience that *I* personally got out of participating & learning about this series through a "Small Group" or "Life Group" with several friends in the community & from church. We met for several weeks & went through the DVD series, discussing questions asked within the series & applying the techniques & things discussed in the series to our own lives & relationships etc. I personally have not had the privilege of reading the actual book that...more
Pastor Steven Furtick is regularly criticized for his lax use of Scripture, his shaky theology, and his over-eager charm, but there is no denying he is gifted and talented. While I'm somewhat in the Reformed camp who has claimed doctrinal war against guys like Furtick, I personally love his ministry. I appreciate what he does. I download podcasts from Mark Driscoll, Matt Chandler, Timothy Keller, James MacDonald, and anyone else you'd call conservative, but my odd blip on the iPod is Steven Furt...more
Read this, if only to gain exposure from a mega church but don't read this to learn. There were a few things I found uncomfortable with this pastor and his church that lean toward the unhealthy.
A church is not successful based on its numbers.
A healthy church has the majority, if not all serving. His church is 12,000 and only a few thousand serve.
He mentioned that he doesn't even know the roles in his church. The pastor needs to know each person, because in the end he is accountable for his flock...more

"Audacious faith" - that is the key phrase in Steven Furtick's
Sun Stand Still: What Happens When You Dare to Ask God for the Impossible
. The subtitle says it all - What Happens When You Dare to Ask God for the Impossible. The story of Joshua asking God to cause the sun to stand still in the sky, that the Lord's words may come to pass, is that backdrop to this challenging, inspiring book. In the same way that Joshua possessed an audacious faith to ask God for what seemed impossible, we are to l...more

I read about 60% of the book and then I decided enough was enough. The book contained the shallow individualistic type of theology that unfortunately is to be expected of popular evangelical books. Furtick makes some good points in the book and the style is easy enough to read. But there is nothing profound in this book that you couldn't find all over the place.
The individualism that permeates this book is very disappointing and encourages the view that it is just you and God against the world....more

The first time I had heard of Steven Furtick was when I picked up this book. Evidently he is a pastor of a very large and successful Church and movement in the southern states. Admittedly, even in first picking up this book and perusing the first few chapters it is hard to get a complete picture of the man and his methodology. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to find many who might be prone to reading a certain degree of cynicism in to what at first glance gives the appearance of a superficial...more
This is a wonderful book.
First off- I started going to Elevation church in August 2011. It has truly changed my life and reignited my faith in Jesus. Pastor Steve is a great speaker, he speaks from the heart and brings hope to thousands that are far from God.
This book is no exception.
This book tells us that we need to go before God with powerful, audacious prayer. God is able. He is strong. There are many examples of this in the Bible. The point is- we know He is capable of doing the impossibl...more

Sun Stand Still is about living life in such a way that we look for God in everything that we do. It involves looking for and relying on the miraculous in everything--big and small. The book is fast paced, with some chapters pretty short (two or three pages) and some considerably longer, depending on the point that he's trying to make. But in that pace, he distills some pretty big ideas to things that are much more digestible. Proper theology: 1. God is Great; 2. God is Good. Everything else bui...more

This is a book you should keep on your night stand, so that it doesn't become just another book you read. Furtick unpacks the historical event that undoubtedly rocked Joshua's and the Israelites' world, making it practically and biblically relevant for us today.
This is not a book of cute or over-massaged ideas. It's a first person account of what happens when someone dares to ask God for the impossible.
Furtick's passion jumps off the page and will infect you. Consider yourself warned.

The audience for this book isn't likely to be involved in drinking games, but if they were, "audacious faith" could lead to quite the hangover.
This book was part of a group I did, not a personal pick. From what I knew of the author beforehand, I expected having to stick with it and work harder to find the bits that resonated for me. Unfortunately, nothing comes to mind as something that I've integrated into my daily life.

I know it's a book review but Sun Stand Still is the reason why I'm still married. While dealing with the hurt and pain going on in my life someone suggested it to me. I've read it, Prayed it, believed it, prayed it for others, used it, shared it, re-read it and now I'm recommending it.
It's a fantastic book about a man in the Bible who screwed up and needed time to finish his fight plus inspiring stories to help the Sun stand still in your life.
This read is challenging and convicting. It will be a tool I will refer to over and over again in tough times, and in not-so-tough times.
I'm part of a LifeGroup associated with Livechurch.tv and over the course of the weeks our group read and discussed Sun Stand Still prayers and what God is accomplishing or wanting to accomplish in our lives, there was not one of us who was not challenged, convicted, lifted up, and encouraged. Furtick is annointed, no doubt about it, and God's message rings lou...more

I am still reading this book slowly, highlighting and taking notes. It is confirming so much of what God has been teaching me through His word and by His Spirit. My favorite chapter because of its vivid metaphor of how God works in me and through is chapter 6, "Wave Jumper." Today I read chapter 13, "When the Sun Goes Down." This is a very important chapter in the book, and really spoke to me, as it has been a big part of my experience in life.
Even though his writing style is different from many of the authors I normally read, I was blessed to have been challenged by this book. Once I got past the style issue, Furtick challenged the complacency which surrounded my recent walk and prayer life. While the reader may not agree with all of the author's conclusions, Furtick's challenge for boldness in prayer and our day-to-day living makes this book an excellent instrument for change.
This was a really good book. Similar message to In a Pit, but for me personally, better. I am always impressed at Furtick's ability to pack his messages with a plethora of illustrations and applications and this book is no different. It is essentially a compilation piece of a lot of his sermons, but very good none the less. This book is powerful, practical, challenging, and inspirational.
This is a great book on having audacious faith. This quote best sums up the book: "Your Sun Stand Still prayer, based on your Page 23 vision, activated by audacious faith, will mark your life by the miraculous, empower you to achieve the impossible, and put you in the middle of a move of God" (p. 42). The book is written in a very conversational tone, it was like reading one of Pastor Furtick's sermons. I could hear his voice as I was reading. Highly recommended if you want to step out of the or...more
I already have decided not to live an ordinary life and this book has been a great way to fan my flame. Page 33 challenged me to be more expectant (of God showing up and off) and more motivated Mom and women of God. "How radically different would American youth culture be if we stopped raising our kids to survive their world and started empowering them with vision to change it?"
