This is a remarkably detailed tour guide to all the most culturally relevant sites in Kyoto; overwhelmingly religious sites. The historical narratives to each site are well worth the book if you are a history buff. The maps and directions are fairly detailed for all the 29 Walks. To really appreciate the city through the guide, you may have to return to Kyoto several times to savour what it has to offer. It would be an ideal companion if you were resident for a couple of years in Kyoto.

Kyoto: 29 Walks in Japan's Ancient Capital should not be mistaken as a "map" book. This guide directs travelers to fascinating sites and provides maps, of course, and suggestions. Its real value, though, is as an in-depth reference.

To first time visitors, Kyoto appears inaccessible and hopelessly complex. This fine book lets Kyoto's mystery and history shine forth like a brilliant jewel.
