I thought I reviewed this one already. This is an instructive fairytale for young children about not putting up with a bunch of crap. The paper bag princess is engaged to marry Prince Ronald, this handsome, uptight tennis-playing eighties-yuppie-style monarch, until she has to battle a fire-breathing dragon using only her wits. Elizabeth the princess outsmarts the dragon, but not before his fire breath blows away all of her clothes and she's left to conceal her nakedness by wearing a paper bag. ...more

The book was originally published in 1980, and this copy was the 34th printing. This is a wonderful twist on the-Prince rescuing the Princess from the dragon story. In this case, the story starts out with the Princess dressed in lovely clothes, looking adoringly at the Prince, and the Prince not paying any attention to her. The prince is captured and taken away by a dragon and the dragon burns up all of the princesses lovely clothes, so she has to wear the only thing she can find-a paper bag (he...more

Elizabeth is a beautiful princess with beautful clothes engaged to be married to a prince. One day a dragon comes along and burns up her palace and clothes and takes Ronald away! Eliabeth decides to go after him, but the only thing to wear that wasn't burned is a paper bag. She puts it on and goes off in search of her prince. She finds the dragon easily enough and outwits the dragon to save Ronald. But Ronald is stunned and embarassed by her appearance; despite the fact that she just saved him f...more

I gave this to all of my nieces when they were little. It's an absolutely fabulous story of an intelligent & feisty princess. When a dragon destroy her castle (& her clothes) and kidnaps her future husband, she puts on a paperbag and follows the dragon. She outsmarts the dragon and rescues her prince, who looks her over, and says "You smell like ashes, your hair is all tangled and you are wearing a dirty old paper bag. Come back when you are dressed like a real princess." She r...more

Throughout the years, I have bought this book or referenced it when any of my friends have had a defining break up. The story is of Princess Elizabeth, a beautiful princess who wins a battle of the wits with a fierce dragon to save her Prince Ronald. However, instead of living happily ever after, Ronald uses his first moments of freedom to criticize Elizabeth's bedraggled appearance. Princess Elizabeth chooses to dance off into the sunset on her own, without the awful Ronald.

simply thrilling. a class that is one of my many favorites to read. this book opens your eyes to the not so handsome prince charming's side that is rarely viewed upon. first the princess' castle gets destroyed by a dragon and all she can find to wear is a paper bag. the dragon consequently takes her prince w/ him. so she goes after him along the way she tricks the dragon into exhausting himself out and before long she ends up saving her prince but the ending is not as you would picture it so re...more

I remember this from when I was little and have searched for it at about 4 bookstores in NYC to no avail. I have no idea why it's so hard to track down, but it's a funny, original, girl-power (yes, I actually used that phrase) type of book for kids. Basically there's the little princess who dresses in a paperbag. One day the prince get kidnapped by a dragon, and she goes and saves him and saves the day! But his reaction is something to the effect of: "Ewww. You don't look like a princess.&q...more

Maybe this children's book should be written in the preface to a Dr. Laura book. (Such as the 10 Things A Woman Can Do To Mess Up Their Lives.) There are some very important points here that need to be remembered by all women! Such as, although it is nice to have a "prince" in our lives, we don't need one to be happy.
Again, another book I bought for my daughter and I loved it. This is the basic idea we all try to emphasize to our daughters when raising them. Well, after they grow t...more

This fairy tale twist is for today’s woman and should be shared with daughters and grand-daughters of all ages. If we want to raise strong, independent women, then we need to give them stories of strong, independent girls. This is not about feminism…it’s about being able to make good decisions on your own and not being dependent on someone else to define your life. “Happily ever after” is what you decide to do with your life and the possibilities are endless!!! This is simply a fun...more

I think that this book is hilarious!! I love that it is so different from the typical fairytale or Cinderella story.
Of course, some when reading this might think, Oh, this is a fairytale for feminists.
To those I say, STOP reading so much into everything, it's a children's book, for crying out loud! It's a lovely diversion! Not all stories need be the same, or have the same beginning or the same cookie-cutter ending.

When I first discovered this book, I made a promise to myself that not only would this book be part of my daughters (and son's) library, but I would give this book to as many little girls as a gift as possible. I grew up with Cinderella and Snow White and loved them, but this is a book that all little girls (and boys)should read if not instead, certainly in conjunction. It might save years of bad self imagery and wrong choices. Love it!!!! Hooray for Robert Munsch!

Robert Munsch knows better than to write a fairy tale where the damsel in distress is saved by the galliant prince and lives happily ever after as daintily as a pressed flower in his castle. No no no no no. This princess saves herself. The End! I'm sorry i didn't read Robert Munsch's books as a child. I'm only being introduced to them now, through my canadian boyfriend. But at age 21, it's not too late, i'm loving all his books!

If I had a choose a favorite kids book, this one would probably be it. Like many other Robert Munsch books, it's silly and crazy and it has probably the best ending of any fairy tale type book around. As a teacher there was not a year that I didn't read this book to my class at least 2 or 3 times (at one point I was even invited by other classes to come in and read it). If you have a daughter, this book is perfect.

Munsch apparently wrote this book when he went to a kindergarten class and observed a young girl who seemed to be 'in charge' from the moment she entered. He later found out she had three big brothers and he used her as the model for the princess. It just so happens that we have three sons and then a daughter who loved this book as a child and now loves it for the feminist undertones.

Another favorite. How can you not fall in love with the feisty little princess who learns to love herself for who she is and demands that others treat her with respect. When I read it to Grant, I always change the words in the last page. Or I used to- now he can read and I don't have the luxury of saying, "I don't think you're very nice" instead of "You are a bum."

I found this to be a refreshing picture book. I retold the story using American Sign Language for a project in college.
It's a nice twist of the fairy tale dragon story. It's the princess saving the prince in this one with her bravery and wit.

A great kids book. Princess Elizabeth has it all, beautiful princess clothes, a castle and a prince named Ronald who she is going to marry. Then a dragon destroys the castle, burns all her princess clothes and carries off Ronald. She finds a paper bag that somehow didn't burn and sets off to rescue him...

Excellent book! This is a darling story of a princess who's castle is burned down, and her fience captured by a dragon. She puts on a paper bag, because it is the only thing that is not burned up, and goes in search of her prince. She outsmarts the dragon, and saves the prince. You'll have to read the story to find out how it ends. I LOVE this book!
