One of the best aspects of Reed’s book is his unpredictability. Nothing is scared and every possible topic can be tackled. Here the author takes the happy ever after ending from his first book and turns it on its head when one of the characters is suddenly HIV positive. From the panic at his initial diagnosis to understanding medication and costs, this emotional story shows the scary and realistic aspects often overlooked when HIV changes someone’s life. Well written with an intensity in the lan ...more
„NEG UB2“ is a request on online dating sites: I’m HIV negative, you be too, meaning this person has no interest in dating a HIV infected person.

This sequel to “VGL male seeks same” is about HIV and its impact on life. I can’t tell too much about its contents without spoilers. But this is one of the rare books which really describes what it means to be HIV-infected. Mr. Reed knows a lot about it, that it doesn’t have to be a death sentence anymore and that the request “NEG UB2” is cruel and dis

Ethan Schwartz receives the worst news possible while at his doctor's office. He is HIV positive. He had assumed that due to his nearly nonexistent sex life in the past that he was in the clear. For the last six months he has been in a committed relationship with Brian, or at least what he thought was committed. Now that Ethan is positive, he begins to doubt his boyfriend, the only one he can see that could have possibly infected him. Locked in his own despair and grief, Ethan turns on the perso ...more
How devastating it was for Ethan to find out that he was positive. And his fear and confusion at how it had happened. Was it deliberate on Brian's part or was Brian cheating on him.

I'm glad Ethan took the time to go and talk with Brian because there was real love there and he needed that comfort and support. And I hope all goes well with Brian!

Kind of a hard read, some sad things to deal with, and the blogging and support from others was truly something he was not expecting but which he very muc
Waaaaay too preachy and sincere for my tastes, with an easy/roses and rainbows sort of reconciliation at the end. This was a Message book with a capitol "M".
Whenever I feel in the mood for a good cry, I know if I pick up one of Rick's books, it's likely to happen.
Again, I didn't bother to read the blurb, just started reading it straight after the first, so I was gobsmacked at the beginning of this.
I've read a few of Rick's books now that tackle issues not often found in other stories. It always amazes me how well he can put into words the pain and confusion that someone feels, with whatever issue they're going through. And also the need and the love

In more than 2 years that I read gay romance, I have never read about a HIV+ character; I read about man who worried about it, who waited for the diagnosis, and happily it was negative, I read about man who lost friends, I read about man who were uber-safe... but where are all those men who are HIV+ and still deserves a romance? AIDS was, and sometime still is a deadly virus, but there are more and more cases today of men who can "living positively", enjoying their life with a little more of pre ...more
Oh my... Like the first book, this one was well written and broke my heart... Oh Mr. Reed, my poor poor heart ;)

3,5* - I wish I could give 5*, but damn, I just can't stand Brian...

(view spoiler)
This is the sequel to "VGL Male seeks same", starring Ethan and Brian.
The book's title "NEG UB2" is taken from internet dating site etiquette/ shorthand, it means "I'm HIV-negative and looking for someone who is negative, too"

Ethan doesn't expect to learn he's HIV positive when he goes to his doctor's for a routine checkup. He's even more stunned by the implications that go with the diagnosis than whit the verdict itself; for since he's been almost celibate before he met his current boyfriend,

He had a job he loved and something else he thought he’d never have: Brian, a new man, one whom Ethan thought of as “the one.” The one who would complete him, who would take his life from a lonely existence to a place filled with laughter, hot sex, and romance.

This sequel to VGL Male Seeks Same continues the story of Ethan and Brian. It is now 6 months into their relationship and Ethan gets the devastating and life-altering news that he is HIV+. This short novella recounts Ethan's journey from hearing the initial diagnosis to finally having an honest, heart-to-heart talk with Brian. It is well done, showing Ethan's turmoil without sinking into high melodrama.
4.5 stars. It gave me a lot of goosebumps. I once dated POZ and I can understand how Ethan felt except how my ex got them was worse. It was when I learned to be respectful and treat them equally. Before I met him,I said the same "neg ub2" it hurt him and other POZ men badly. I simple remove that line and said safe sex ONLY! It's more polite than insulting them when it usual wasn't their fault. It only loses a half star because I wanted to know if Brian is POZ too and it's too short.

This book was filled with angst and sadness. My heart broke for Ethan when he got the diagnosis, but then I was annoyed with him for cutting Brian off and never giving him a chance to explain anything. Every time Brian was left standing alone I wanted to reach out an hug him to my breast and whisper words of comfort. I could feel his pain when Ethan took the flowers and threw them on the ground. How hopeless and heartbroken he must have felt.

Great story and I would recommend it to anyone.
NEG UB2 deserves more than five stars. The author did marvelous job with this one, handling a very hard subject with great skill, not making light of a very "life- changing" illness, but still leaving the reader with a feeling of hope.

A very worthy follow up of VGL Male Seeks Same. Brian and Ethan went through a lot and proved that they have that something special that it takes to make it as a couple through the hard times.
Brian was amazingly sweet in this one. Even if he did infect Ethan, I think he more than made up for it by being loving and well, there for Ethan the whole way through. The blog posts were very personal, very thought-provoking. Overall, a great sequel and an excellent read.
Ethan is so human it's scary. He could be me, he could be you. I could be him. The writing is so intimate I couldn't help but live through this story as Ethan Schwartz. A fantastic sequel to M4M, #1.

Clever, relevant, personal, real. Loved it!

Excellent story about a man who learns he's HIV+ as he processes the news and goes through the stages to acceptance.

Not required to read VGL Male Seeks Same, but this is a follow up story set six months after VGL with the same couple.

I appreciate the author writing about a subject that rarely, if ever, gets looked at in this genre. It was written with a caring touch and I thought the emotional roller coaster the MC, Ethan, has to ride was incredibly gripping.
Man did Brian get a raw deal from Ethan. I understand the shock and anger Ethan goes through but still. Loved this book.
I really was nervous reading this one, but I'm glad I did. Love the story. It's a keeper!
