IS A SECOND CHANCE AT HAPPINESS WORTH RISKING EVERYTHING? EVEN A BEST FRIEND?

Susannah has been living with Doug for eight years, acting as stepmother to his three unappreciative children and wondering why she doesn't mind much when he sometimes sleeps in his study. She's known her best friend Amelia since they were teenagers. Amelia never minces words, and Susannah doesn't

My feelings were alternating between hating and liking susannah an Rob. Their actions were just aggravating!! ><' , however, I felt sorry for them... Susannah, who from the beginning to end, was considerably unfortunate. Her chances come and go and she has no fix shelter. The fact that she had no-one at the end made me feel even more pitiful toward her. As for Rob, Ahh!!! he just, I don't know... He could have had her, though unfortunately, married to another girl.

There are so many facets to this book, and the thing I liked the most is that is was messy and muddled and there were no clear answers. I absolutely loved and envied Susannah's years long friendship with Amelia, they knew each other so well and those are the kind of friendships that are more valuable than anything else. Susannah is facing so many hard decisions and disappointments as she is nearing her fortieth birthday, and realizing that it is time for her to take stock of her life, and decide ...more

Two and half stars. From all the comments on the book I expected it to make me cry - I'm a weeper - but it didn't. It reminded me of One Day - in the sense of chances missed for love but whereas in One Day the hero and heroine did have their moment in the sun, that wasn't the case with 'The way we were'. Whilst I'm not fond of uber-macho heroines, I really wish Susannah had stood up for herself a little more. Why stay with a guy you clearly don't love? For most of the book!!! I think there were ...more

This book made me ache, which normally might not sound like the best thing. However, in this instance to feel as much as I did throughout the 4 hours I read this book is a high compliment to Miss Noble. I am sure for me it touched something so personal that emotional overload was bound to happen. I cried and laughed and was touched by the beauty of the characters, the honesty of their flaws and their understanding of right and wrong and then LOVE! I get it, I get it!

Such an amazng book, thank y

Non formulaic and messy - I like that.

This was not one of those four star stellar reads that takes your breath away and has you pondering for days after. Nor was it a good old gritty pull apart the fabric of society and provide commentary on current issues type. Rather it was a dependable British family saga which centered around unrequited love and the folly of waiting for the stars to align before we act. It was a story focusing on the importance of connection, honesty and the need to say the

Different type of book for me. I always like the happy ending where the girl and the guy get together and live happily ever after. Not happening in this one. This story is rather sad. Suzannah falls hard for Rob during high school. He goes off to war and she goes to college, get drunk and loses her virginity to a nobody. Tells Rob. End of that relationship. She then marries Seth, which lasts for less than a year. Next up is Douglas who she lives with for ten years. The passion and love dies afte ...more

My FirstReads ARC just arrived in the mail. Love the cover, hope to get to it soon!

So I started this last night. Truthfully I wasn't expecting much -- though there are only four reviews so far, the average is a sliver over two stars. I told myself I didn't even have to finish it if I hated it after an hour or so.

But I ran a hot bath... and two hours later I was still reading. I really, really like this book so far (I'm now about halfway through it). Noble manages to walk a fine line perfectly

I'm not sure how to rate this book -- I was going to give it a 3, but then the ending sucked, so it went down to a 2.

I usually love Noble's books, and I do think her writing is great. I always love the way she develops her characters, and her storylines are usually poignant, fun, easy to relate to, or otherwise created in a way that hooks me and keeps me interested.

This one, though, was a bit slow and boring. I really just wanted to read about the Rob and Susannah storyline, and didn't give a h

Susannah and Rob were teenage childhood sweethearts they broke up 20 years ago and moved on; they have both been unlucky in love since. Susannah’s partner is older than her grumpy, controlling and won’t visit her family, he has 2 children from his previous relationship and Susannah is left to care for them while he is in work. Susannah and Rob meet at a wedding Susannah starts to think back the happy memories, she visits Rob’s parents and out of the blue Rob rings her one day, they meet up, all ...more

I immensely loved the story "The Way We Were". I liked that it was honest and real. The writing was simple, its supporting plots and characters were moving at a good pace. I really enjoyed the technique of using flashbacks from the past and tying them in with the present day. It was a nice way of relating the past and its relation to what was happening within the current circumstances.

I must say, I was expecting the typical happy ending but by the time I finished reading it, I was glad that thing

This book was a massive disappointment. I usually love Elizabeth Noble's writing, she is light without being meaningless and constructs great characters and stories. But this time the two main characters seemed to be puppets - they were unbelievable (particularly Rob). Mostly, the story is depressing, with the odd dip into melodrama. The one interesting part in this book is the main character's burgeoning relationship with her defacto step kids but this is not explored as much as it could have b ...more

An interesting look at what people are willing to put up with, sacrifice, and do in order to have a "normal" life.

Susannah once loved someone with the passion and commitment of first love. She and Rob were so right for each other that they wanted their first time of love making to be perfect. They waited for that ideal moment and the time passed, life went on and they missed that opportunity.

Years later, after a failed marriage, living in an unhappy, unfulfilling relationship, Susannah, sees Ro

I hated the ending, but loved reading through the lives of these amazing people the author created - the ones that made me laugh, the ones that made me cry and the ones that I related to despite them experiencing some things I have not yet and may never experience. I admire that these people came to life on the page as is rare in the manner that they did nowadays. I felt happy reading this book and am glad that I picked up at random as something to read over the summer. In the strange transition ...more

Well, well.
What did I think?

Hard to say, however, let me first stress this: Do net let yourself be put off from reading this book because of my low rating, if it interests you. I honestly don't think that it's badly written or anything, not that bad anyways.

Personally I just found myself enjoying this book less than I hoped, and that even though it features a main character named Susannah.
On the back cover it gets praised as "for fans of Jojo Moyes", haven't read her, but Elizabeth Noble doesn't

When you read the first chapter youll be confused of who-is-who as Elizabeth Noble sort of mentioned all of the characters' name. The ending is just differet from most of the oter books would have so I think it's nice because it feels real.

This book isn't fantastic and I suspect I won't remember that much about it in the future, but I liked the realistic ending. I also could relate to some of the situations experienced by the characters, although I might not always agree with them.

This was enjoyable enough, but I really didn't love it! Not a not to be missed. The ending was disappointing, and it was hard to understand why the central characters' best friend was so enraged with her. Its didn't really hang together.

Now reading the Perfume Collector, which I believe was recommended by one of my 6 or 7 Shelfari followers, or followees. I am just at the beginning, but am intrigued and engrossed. I love that I have read a few books from my new friends. I wonder if any of you ha

I bought this novel in an airport bookstore, hoping that it would accompany me through the flight. Yeah, it did. But it was a bad company. Finishing this book turned out to be a struggle. I know, I know. To read or not is a matter of choice. However, my wanting not to waste my spent money on this book had created some sort of obligation to do it (one of the reasons I prefer free ebooks nowadays). I dozed off several times while flipping through the pages and it took me nearly two weeks to get to ...more

Well, this one started well, but when I finished it, I was really down, and I finally realized that it was because Susanna, the main character, was such a jerk. Really. The copy of this book is all about second chances, but it's more like sixth chances because she keeps being selfish and shallow and demanding. The relationship she's in with Doug is already in trouble, but she refuses to do anything about it, and her passivity makes her much much less sympathetic. When she finally goes away to th ...more

I was really, really torn about rating this book. I had a really tough time deciding between three or four stars, mostly because I enjoyed quite a few aspects of the book, but the presentation was.. Lacking at times.

I didn't realize that the author was British, so when I came across all kinds of fun British phrases, I was pleasantly surprised. The author has a nice sense of humor in terms of how her characters interact; they're amusing, yet in a realistic, almost self-deprecating way, which I a

normally enjoy books by this author however not this one! I only finished reading it in hope it would get better and so I could find out what happened to the characters..
it was a slow book, a lot of unnecessary history and the main bit of story that happened seemed to be rushed and it was unrealistic I thought of how things turned out.
Susannah had a flat AND the use of a French cottage we didn't get to know about until very close to the end of the story..
very disappointed with this book.

Really enjoyed reading this book. I thought the best thing the author could do was not give it a happy ending and to make the reader aware that life never goes according to plan and that when you think it has finally settled there is always something coming up to prevent it flowing the way you wanted. A lot of people will read this book and see how Rob & Sussanah were perfect for each other however once you get to the end you will understand why it never worked out, why they never had their ...more

I thought at first this was going to be a typical chicklit, but it surprised me by having more depth. What makes it more than your average chicklit is the lack of tidy endings, and the inclusion of more than just happy endings to everyone's stories. I found the characters interesting and diverse.
I just love it Susannah and Rob were childhood sweethearts. But as with most early love affairs, they broke up, moved on and now find themselves in very different places. And not entirely happy - who is?

I liked When You Were Mine but it was a little slow at the beginning. I felt like there was something being left out. But then although I didn’t like what Susie and Rob end up doing I can understand how they got in that situation. I did feel that there needed to be more shown in the relationship between Susie and her best friend. Or is she really such a self-centered person that she doesn’t get more involved with her during her bout with Cancer? How ca

Took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. However, Susanna infuriated me, sometimes I just wanted to shake her and tell her to stop being a doormat to Douglas. But that aside, i enjoyed how the author portrayed the many emotions involved within this story, and although there is no happy ending, I was quite satisfied with the outcome (would have been a bit cheesy if there was a happy ending)

I was very disappointed in this story, it was very disapointing! I wish I had read the reviews on here first, As I would have seen the mention of One Day being similar! I didn't like One Day and didn't Like this story, it left me feeling sad and well just SAD! I do see that sometimes life doesn't have a happy ending, but why would I want to read about that!

You know how when you're eating a TV dinner, and the texture sucks and the flavour is just OK, but you keep eating it anyhow? That's this book. Several lusty sex scenes, a glimpse of an old lover at a wedding ceremony, several loved ones diagnosed with serious medical conditions, evil ex's, lost virginities, tearful apologies, and a whole lot of civilized wine drinking.
