Lacey Lancaster's marriage ended in divorce, so she has decided that she will steer clear of men, and be content to live a quiet life alone, alone that is except for her cat Cleo, a beautiful Abyssinian that she had decided she will breed to earn some extra money. Her next door neighbor Jack has been trying to engage her in conversation for months, but she has steered clear. She thinks that he is a womanizer and feels sorry for his "girlfriend" Sarah because she always hears them arguing. When Ja...more

Notes: This is a novella (aka short story) with another short story by a different author included. This is not a full length story. Nothing on the book indicates this nor is it stated on Amazon. The only clue is a lower price.

Lacey Lancaster went through a devastating divorce a year ago. She never saw it coming, but then most woman who are utterly in love with their not yet known to be cheating husbands don't. Now living in San Francisco trying to rebuild her life alone, she finds herself annoy...more

This review is for The Bet written by Darlene Panzera who won a contest sponsored by Macomber. Her novella is included in Family Affair.

What a delightful story! I enjoyed every minute of it, a quick read full of chuckles, suspense, and romance. Jenny dropped out of medical school to take over the ranch when her father died in a fire. Late on payments the bank sets a deadline and she has no way of paying it.

At a local cafe there is a lot of betting taking place, bets were placed on which of the...more

I found “Family Affair” to be a cute story and at only one hundred and two pages (which includes the Homemade Treats for Your Cat recipe chapter) it was also a very quick read. One could almost read it completely through on a lunch hour and it would definitely provide a nice “pick me up” for anyone having a bad day.

The premise of “Family Affair” is this: Lacey Lancaster has just recently suffered through a painful divorce. Once the divorce has been finalized she uproots herself and moves to San...more

There was a time when I would have swallowed Family Affair whole. I would have loved the simplicity of the romance, the innocence of the characters. I absolutely loved how two people with seemingly nothing in common could come together. Through dislike, they find love. Through misunderstanding, they find acceptance and compromise. I loved a story where in the end, love conquers all. That was then. Now, well, I'm a bit more cynical. Don't get me wrong, I still believe that love conquers all, but...more

Starting over in a new apartment, new job, new city was the only way Lacey Lancaster felt she could survive her divorce. She was struggling with the loneliness of it so she got a Abyssinian purebred cat named Cleo. Possibly wanting to breed the cat, she waited, but when Cleo finally went into heat she found out that her neighbor Jack Walker had a cat also, named Dog. Leaving her door open to go ask Jack to be quiet so that she could make a call, Dog got into her apartment and now she had to find...more

This was my first book by this author even though I had heard wonderful things about her books. While I enjoyed the characters of Lacey and Jack, I felt the story had some problems along the way.

Let me first start off by saying that this is a fairly short and quick read at only 99 pages. I was able to read and finish this book within an hour. Seeing how it is a short read, maybe the author intended it to be rushed and fast paced. I just couldn't see Lacey, who has just recently divorced, rush in...more

And Verizon Internet crapped out just as I hit save on this review. It wasn't long but I still want to cry a little. I think I got everything back, if not the same wording. *sigh*

This was a short, saccharine little thing. Basically someone asked her to write a story with cats, and she came through. I am not even close to being a cat person, but that part of the story was minor and only served as a catalyst (*rimshot*) for our diffident couple to get closer to each other. I liked the infatuated n...more

This is one of those little "read in one sitting" books. Very cute, and sweet, and written in typical Debbie Macomber fashion.

Lacey has recently moved to San Francisco after a heartbreaking betrayal and divorce to start anew. She purchases an Abysinnian cat for companionship, and in the hopes of breeding kittens which she can sell. Unfortunately, her next door neighbor's alley cat puts an end to that notion when he sneaks into her house while her cat, Cleo, is in heat, and impregnates it. This r...more

Well, there you have it! That’s just about it…

This synopsis almost covers the whole story. I’m not much of a fan of contemporary romance and this would be my first book by this author, so there, now that I got this out-of-the-way, my thoughts are this: Cute, fun and sweet VERY short story. I was done with it in one afternoon and honestly I don’t think it was worth the price. I’d have to say that it was well written, but for the life of me I’m not sure why was it marketed this way, as a short HAR...more

I have loved many of Debbie Macomber's books but this one I didnt care for. It was so predictable and for a while there I thought I was reading a harlequin romance. It was the same story you have heard a hundred times. Maybe it is because it was a shorter story I liked it less since I am not fond of short stories but while it was a quick read I felt that I had already read the same story before. I found it a bit choppy maybe because the author was trying to get so much into this one book. I didn...more

This was cute. The edition I read is actually being re-released paired with another story, "The Bet" by Darlene Panzera, a contest where the publisher, Avon Romance (who gave me an ARC of the book for review), was looking for similar style stories to Debbie Macomber. They apparently narrowed it down t 3 and let Debbie Macomber pick the winner. :)

Both stories were sweet. I normally like more steam, but for a rainy afternoon read with an afghan on your lap (Macomber actually recommends a lap cat f...more

A short little read, that will take a soft blanket, comfy curled up spot and about two (maybe three) cups of Lady Grey tea to read. If you are cat lover, then all the better to enjoy.

I went into the book, knowing what I was going to get, so I was not overly surprised when it served exactly that purpose.

I do have one bone to pick over the storytelling.

The lead character begins the book complaining about her job and how underpaid she is. The reader sees one scene in which she asks her boss for a...more

This was a quick read. After staying up half the night last night I needed a quick one. This was a cute book about a woman trying to get on with her life after her divorce. Her husband asked for a divorce and told her he loved someone else. She spent the next year depressed and unsure of her self. She hid in her apartment and tried to avoid any contact with men. Her male neighbor tried to talk to her and asked her out several times. She knew nothing about him other then he had frequent fights wi...more

Recently divorced, Lacey moves into an apartment and begins a new job. Still hurting from her ex-husband's rejection of her, Lacey keeps pretty much to herself. She decides to adopt a cat named Cleo. Her plan was to breed the Abyssinian cat. She meets Jack, who lives across the hall and they begin a friendship. He has secretly admired her from the first time he saw her but her hurt has kept her away from meeting people. Unfortunately, his male cat named Dog catches Cleo when she is in heat and i...more

“Family Affair” is a light romantic comedy that would be a good beach read. It’s about Lacey, a woman whose lost her self-confidence after a divorce but with the assistance of her cat, finds love again with her neighbor, Jack. Having been through a divorce, Lacey was able to comfort Sarah, Jack’s sister, when she was betrayed by her live-in boyfriend. It finishes with a cute touch: recipes for cat treats you can make for your cat!

This is a cute short book that is a fun read, only 99 pages. I tho...more

Well it only took two sittings to finish the bonus story The Bet found after Family Affair in this new mass marketing printing edition. I often enjoy Debbie Macomber and felt I would probably enjoy her pick from a contest. In the end it was a good story that ended well. Overall it kept my attention and I wanted to know what would come next. Being general market it was a clean and fun romantic read. I did not love it and as I sit here and try to decipher why I think it would just have to be the s...more

This was a short, quick, and cute little read.

Lacey after being with Peter for several years Peter approaches her with a request for a divorce. Lacey was told that Peter was in love with another woman. After their divorce Lacey packed up her stuff and moved to San Francisco. Lonely she buys herself a cat named Cleo. Her neighbor Jack has been friendly and tried to ask her out several times. Lacey has no interest in men especially with someone like Jack who seems to have plenty of relationships....more

I liked the story, for as short as it was. What bothered me were little inconsistancies. There were several places where a reference to a previous action or statement was made, but it actually had not happened. It makes the story feel a lttle rushed, like there was a deadline and space limitations, so editing was very quick and broad. Or this was an early draft, where some of her thoughts had not made it from her head to the page. I guess, as a writer it is a little comforting. That is always my...more

This book is extremely small.. only like 120 pages, if that. I don't usually read anything by this author or really even this genre but it was super cheap so I grabbed it. This book is about a man and woman who have been neighbours for a little while. One day, the woman's cat becomes pregnant with the man's cat and every so often the man would come over to see her, and wait for the kittens. Sounds kinda weird, I know.. Through the process of visiting the female cat, the two fall in love. There a...more

This book was just okay, probably my favorite part was the cats. This is a reprint of a book that Debbie Macomber wrote back in 1994, it was taken out of print and now re-released as a hardback. I don't know much about the publishing world but I'm wondering, why? I didn't think this book was so good that it needed to be resurrected. Maybe made available as an ebook for the legion of Macomber fans but a hardback re-release? I dunno. It was short and it was sweet, but I wasn't engaged in the story...more

If you're a cat lover then this reprint of Debbie Macomber's novella will entertain with the added bonus of a short ranching story by Darlene Panzera.

After her divorce, Lacey Lancaster leaves her cheating husband and the town they lived in as a couple behind. She starts over in San Francisco with a new job, a new place to live and a new roommate, a cat named Cleo. She doesn't want to date but her feline friend Cleo, a very amorous female, hooks...more

A short, quick read at less than 100 pages, but the story was fun. Lacey Lancaster has survived a year since her divorce, a year without trusting men. But the cute guy next door has been trying everything to get her to go out with him. No way she would though since he has a girlfriend he keeps trying to get to move in with him. At least that's what Lacey thinks is happening. When Jack Walker's male cat takes advantage of Lacey's purebred female cat, it's time to let the romance begin.

This is one of Debbie's earlier books that has been re-published. It is a cute story about a young woman who is recovering from her husband leaving her and a divorce. It is almost a short story at 99 pages. I believe that Debbie has grown a lot in her writing since this book was initially written. For those who didn't think that this book was spectacular than I encourage you to read more of her books. This book is not a part of any of her series such as Cedar Cove or Blossom St. I would recommen...more

After reading a long and more intense book, I picked up this little 100 pager at the library thinking I would like the short book. I had the chance to read it today. It was fine, I guess. But in the overall, I am reminded why I like long books so much better. The story was ok, but it would have been better if there was more time to get to know the character and to make the story line develop rather then just brushing around everything and finishing it up.

This is NOT a new release at all. Rather it is a release of a short story with with a new cover on it. I was anxious to read this book as I thought it was another installment of the Blossom Street series. Which I loved by the way. You have to admit the covers do look similar. This entire book can be read in about an hour or two. Boring and not much of a challenge.

I guess next time I'll not be so quick to judge a book by its cover!

The Bet is a short, sweet story. Jenny is trying to raise money to save her family's ranch, and Nick bets that she'll marry him within five weeks. It's kind of a silly bet made in the heat of the moment, but Jenny needs the money, so agrees.

What I couldn't understand was why Jenny would trust Nick at all. He finagles a way onto her ranch so he can court her, and she lets him! Yes, he is tall, dark, and handsome...but hello? He bet $10,000 that she would marry him, so what is she thinking?

I coul...more
