The Film Paintings of David Lynch: Challenging Film Theory

One of the most distinguished filmmakers working today, David Lynch is a director whose vision of cinema is firmly rooted in fine art. He was motivated to make his first film as a student because he wanted a painting that “would really be able to move.” Most existing studies of Lynch, however, fail to engage fully with the complexities of his films’ relationship to other a ...more

A must-read for any Lynch fan. I find MacTaggart's argument of approaching Lynch's films like moving paintings to be a key to understanding his work. So much is made out of trying to trace narrative threads in his work (good luck with his most recent film, INLAND EMPIRE), but although Lynch does not dismiss the possibility for narratives to exist, he insists that his work is meant to be felt, to be experienced, and not to be understood strictly in a narrative sense. To think about Lynch's films ...more

Meh. I'd probably go 2.5 if half-stars were an option, but I cannot in good conscience give a "like" rating to a book with this many egregious writing errors. The current state of publishing, with the virtual disappearance of professional editing, proof-reading, and so on, is having truly depressing results. Seriously, an academic book ought to be able to get basics like subject-verb agreements correct, even when another noun comes between the two. Tsk tsk!

Added to the fundamental writing proble

This is a scholarly work on my favorite film director David Lynch, so it's a good bet I would like it. And true, Mactaggart is obviously also a fan, but he has done his research and writes in a thoughtful and illuminating way. I found his analyses regarding "Twin Peaks" (both the TV series and prequel film) and "Inland Empire" to be particularly compelling, though discussion of "Lost Highway", "Mulholland Drive" and other films could also be quite intriguing. Highly recommended for other "Peaks" ...more

Oh, you know, another book on Lynch incorporating all sorts of theoretical predecessors and, oh yes, putting its own spin on things by self-proclaiming a love for Lynch. Shocker! All told, not that I'm telling much, I found Mactaggart slightly self-involved but quite inventive and well read, so that's two yesses and a no for me. A good complement to less theoretical readings of Lynch, just not one on which the buck should stop.

Fascinating but often difficult reading. Hard to rate at this point. i'll need to reread it and re-rate it after watching some of the films mentioned in the book.
