The thing was sitting on the hallway carpet, right in front of the door to our room. . . I pulled the napkin off. Underneath was a hat, upside down, filled with ice and snow. . ."What the hell," I said. I bent down and picked it up.

"That's the hat he was wearing, right? The old man downstairs?"
"It is," I said. "But why?"
"Wait a minute," she said. "Is there something else...more

We listened to this as an audiobook on the drive up to Mackinac for summer vacation. I freely admit the narrator (whose name eludes me) didn't help the book's case, but here's my review, in summary.

Oh, my, GOD. She looked at me with THOSE EYES. GOD DAMMIT ALL! Son of A bitch. Good guy! Bad guy! Family feud! THOSE EYES! Blood. Blood! Spinning! THOSE EYEEEES! That face! GOD DAMMIT ALL!

Perhaps if I'd read other books in the series, the characters might've resonated more; I suspect that, overall, th...more

Even though this is the 6th of the Alex McKnight book series it was the first book I read and it was not the last Steve Hamilton book I read. I continued to read another three of his books because I really enjoyed this first one, "Ice Run", and with each book I continued to learn about Alex McKnight even more. When you think things can't get any worse for one person in life they get worse for Alex McKnight. He is confronted by an elderly man he doesn't remember by the elderly man sure does. Bein...more

I put this series in the category of "television substitutes," and the books are all thoroughly enjoyable examples of that category. The main character, Alex McKnight; is a former minor league baseball player, a former Detroit cop (who took three bullets during the shooting that killed his partner); and an uninterested, but licensed, private investigator. He considers himself a failure at all three. He lives in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where he ends up sticking his nose into problems that, in...more

Darn you, Steve Hamilton!!

How am I supposed to get any work done around the house once I've started one of your Alex McKnight novels?? (*) They are almost impossible to put down, and Ice Run is no exception.

Who knew that there was so much mystery to mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?? (Yeah, OK, Henry Kisor & Joseph Heyward did, but we'll leave them to reviews of their own works.) Even if you do occasionally foray across the border into southwestern Ontario? Yes, your characters - Alex...more

I've read all the books in the series and I'm starting to feel like Alex McKnight is a real person.

There is a paragraph in this book that I marked to quote.

"I'd known enough liars in my life. You can't be a cop without meeting plenty of them. For the worst of them, the truly hopeless born liars, maybe this is how it all starts, by keeping a tight lid on your own secrets. By never revealing the truth about yourself. When you've learned to control the truth, then you can start bending it. Just a...more

I am a big fan of Steve Hamilton and am working my way through the entire Alex McKnight series. I've liked them all ... they are generally quick and interesting read. Perhaps there are simply too many of them and they start to run together, but this one just didn't pass the test for me. It seemed a little forced to me, a bit contrived, a bit too much. I have two more to read and they'll be on a summer day when I want to get a quick read done at the beach.

That said, Hamilton's Lock Artist is one...more

Alex McKnight has a new girlfriend, Natalie, a woman who is an Ontario Provincial Police officer. Their relationship is very sudden, very intense. But of course if you’ve read previous books in the series you know that Alex is going to find his way to trouble- and as often as not through no fault of his own. This time trouble begins at the Ojibway Hotel in Sault St. Marie, Michigan (the Soo) when an old man watches Alex while he’s there with Natalie. Later he delivers a hat to them saying, “I kn...more

This book followed what I considered the best of the series. And this one is the worst of the series by far.

Alex and his girlfriend drive all over the UP chasing one lead or crisis after another. He runs the wheels of his truck driving. I kept telling myself that if he gets in that truck one more time I will stop reading. Of course I didn't. This one was not a quick read like the others. It drug on and the plot was contrived.

Interesting, quick read. I have read several of Hamilton's Alex McKnight series now. This isn't my favorite, but I did enjoy it. This one added a woman for McKnight, but of course, she wasn't just a simple woman but had a ton of baggage. I do enjoy this series and will continue reading. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a quick mystery read.

When I first read Steve Hamilton I was pleased to have another cold country to read about. Sue Henry's books on Alaska are a treat, and so is Hamilton's Alex McKnight, the modern savior of friends' troubles. A fun read and if you are melting in the hot weather, Hamilton's books will cool you off. Set in Michigan around the lakes. Light read.

For some reason, it reads like a romance novel which incidentally is also a crime/thriller novel. Critics have written that Hamilton has written it in a masculine way though for the life of me I couldn't see how. I'm glad though that he did not create a simpering woman for his male protagonist (who I think is rather wise and mature, in an oddly hilarious way. I understand though that not everyone would see it the same way I do) who did not faint at the merest sound. I have to say though that the...more

Another terrific entry in the Alex McKnight series. Filled with plenty of twists and turns to keep you turning the pages far into the night. Love the way in which Hamilton very successfully uses the setting and the weather. You can feel the snow flying in your face and the cold settling in your bones. Very highly recommend.

Hamilton apparently belongs to the Ross MacDonald school-- a long buried deep dark family secret/feud erupts into open internecine warfare as soon as our hero, in this case McKnight, gets involved. And happily, like Macdonald, Hamilton is a good writer who creates believable well-drawn characters.

A solid enough outing for Alex McKnight although the repeated beatings sort of stretch credulity in this one. I know enough about head injuries to know that recovery is lengthy and key. Still, as a summer time read, especially if you're familiar with the other books, this one will keep you entertained.

I enjoy the Alex McKnight mysteries, in large part because they take place in the Upper Peninsula where my husband is from. Alex is a very likeable character, one you would like as a friend, just a regular guy! The story was engaging, with plenty of action. Poor Alex...He's always getting into fights!

A perfect read for a hot summer day - lots of snow and ice in this one! I was distracted by all the driving around - more than a tad unrealistic, in my book - and the "confession" was a bit too pat for my taste as well. But I do like the characters and will definitely be reading more in this series.

Very good. I really like this author as he writes about the eastern UP. This story was a continuation (sort of) of the previous book I read by him (Blood is the Sky) but I didn't know that. You don't have to read them in order as he explains the characters and situations well.

I thought this series was getting better. The dopey dialogue was improving. But Alex McKnight in love is truly dopey. He was believing in her, and following her blindly, so much, I thought she would turn out to be involved in the crime. Not so, but this book is a crime scene anyway.

I found myself absolutely lost in this book and as the story progressed, I couldn't wait to get to the end. I was however, so disappointed with the ending! I have so many unanswered questions from the plot. The author built the story with many twists and turns, and my impression is that it was all wrapped up too quickly in the last 50 pages. I would still give Steve Hamilton another try though, not sure which of his books I may come across yet...

I picked this book up as a discount and didn't realize it was part of a series until a few chapters in. It was enjoyable, but not so great that I want to run out and buy all the rest of the series. If I came across another Alex McKnight book, I'd get it.
Judy
This is a good series. I really enjoy the setting because I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I have been to many of the places mentioned in the book so reading about them makes it fun. I look forward to the next one.

Didn't grab me like his other ones but still entertaining. You definitely want to read this one when you're either snowed in or at least deep in winter. Lots of snowfall in this and it adds a lot to the atmosphere.

Very Good; Continuing character: Alex McNight; as they start to build a relationship, McKnight and Canadian police office Natalie Reynaud are haunted by people and occurrences in Reynaud's family history

Well, I liked the location and the plot moved, but I didn't feel as involved in the narrative as I would have liked. Likable protaganist, but needed some more fleshing out for a really good read.

I was hoping to like the book, it took place in Sault Ste. Marie in area that I vacationed in as a child. I found the book to be slow moving, but I would be willing to give this author another chance

Wow. Steve Hamilton continues to amaze me that he could evolve what seemed like an old fashioned hard boiled cop into a very complex human. I look forward to more Alex McKnight.

Read this in 2007. Don't really remember it well now, just noted that it was "pretty good"., and he seems to be a victim in much of this book.

Ahah... This was the one I was trying to remember, while reading "A cold day in paradise." (Read before I was tracking on Goodreads.)

Another entertaining Steve Hamilton novel. I recommend it to anyone who likes light mystery with interestiing characters.
