As a native North Dakotan, I encourage you not to read this book, which is so full of mistruths about the North Dakota experience.

The plot is outraqeous. North Dakota may be viewed as backward by the rest of the nation, but our State Board of Education would never allow ONE SINGLE teacher to teach all of the the subjects that would ordinarily be taught in a ND high school, no matter how remote. That is an affront to the intelligence of the people of my state. The book cover is even more insulti...more

Debbie Macomber is a tried and true author, I usually enjoy her books and have no problems finishing them. That is true in this case as well.

This is the first in a trilogy about a small town in North Dakota called Buffalo Valley. It is a typical small farming community that is dying with people leaving town to find work elsewhere. Then the high school teacher dies leaving an opening and a fear of the town becoming a ghost town. Enter Lindsey whose grandparents lived in this town. She needs a cha...more

Dakota Born brings to life the characters in the small North Dakota town of Buffalo Valley. When the book opens the town is dying, suffering like many agricultural towns in the Midwest. The town is desperately looking for a high school teacher when Lyndsay Snyder visits from Savannah, Georgia. Her grandparents were from Buffalo Valley, and Lyndsay comes through town fresh from a breakup and in search of some perspective. When she decides it's time to take an extended break from Savannah, she cal...more

This is a book my mom received from Talking Books. Again, she started it, got me hooked & then went on to finish it without me. I heard snippets of it as I came & went about errands & house work.

Even though I count Ms Macomber one of my favorite authors, I almost had to force myself to finish this book. There were so many characters to keep track of, I wrote a list of them so I could go back & check to see who the character was when their story came up. There are 2 more books in...more

I tend to go more for the historical or sci fi genre, but I received a few Macomber boons as hand me downs from a co-worker. While not my favorite author, I actually find myself enjoying these Macomber books. This one was a fairly enjoyable read for me. i liked how Lindsay stood for herself and broke herself away from her noncommittal boyfriend to get a new start in this town.

Her attempts to revitalize this small town felt realistic. You could tell she was genuinely trying, and I was cheering he...more

It took me way longer than it should've to read this book. The plot felt like it was lacking something, and most important, there were just too many characters to follow-I counted about 18. I would have rather it followed just Lindsay and Gabe, or at the most, Lindsay, Gabe, Joanie, and Brandon. As it was, there were just too many different points of view. I kept losing track of who was who. And to be honest, some of the character's stories didn't interest me at all, or felt unfinished. For exam...more

Good book but had a little too much going on for me. I would have enjoyed more focus on the main story and less secondary stories which were left unfinished at the end of the book...especially since I will not be reading the rest of the series. I'm very picky about reading clean books with as little cursing and explicit details as possible. I had heard that Debbie Macomber was a clean author so I decided to give her a try. This book was tame by today's standards but it still crossed a line for m...more

This is a great book, i will be reading the other part of the trology. I like the way the community come to gether to build the town up and help the school teacher. No the state probley would not allow one teacher to teach all the kid at one time. I have come from a small community, and the school i went too had 3 grade groups in one class. It took me back to that time.

I have never read a Debbie Macomber book and found this one at my dinky library and thought I would give it a try. (My sister loves Macomber's Blossom Street books.) This one was okay and since I am a sap, I did cry at the end. There were many different story lines going on and I would have liked it better if she had just focused on two relationships instead of 5 or 6. Since my dinky little library also had the other two in this series, I will probably end of reading those as well.

This is the second reading for this series for me; it is as pleasurable this time as it was the first time. ( I seem to enjoy the series that Ms. Macomber writes more than the stand-alones.)
The plot has depth with numerous characters and their lives so one doesn't get bored with the story, and you really get to know and understand the characters. I could certainly relate to the traits of some of these small-town people, especially the stubbornness and narrow-minded thinking.
Good job and well wor...more

This is book 1 of the Dakota series. Debbie has a way of writing that makes you feel like you are a part of the family in the book. There are 4 books in the series. Will be reading the others. It is a story of a young woman who goes back to visit her grandparents home in a very very small town and sees the sign they need a teacher and after thinking about it - she applies and is accepted. What goes on from there I won't say but you won't be disappointed. It is a feel good book.

I just started reading the Dakota series. I really liked it. Debbie always brings her community to life for her readers. I have driven through the Dakotas. Actually... I might have been (okay, as a passenger) driving through when I read this.... huh well. So; a dying Midwestern town, an outsider with family ties to the town(albeit passed on), and a story of hope and love. A winning combination!

This is a story about a new teacher who moves to a rural town to fill the spot vacated by the previous teacher. As these stories go, she "reaches" the students, transforms the town, and in turn, connects with her roots and learns how to grow from those into her future. It may not be earth-shattering fiction, but it's entertaining. I mean, it had me at "new teacher moves to rural town."

This book had a little bit of everything as far as relationships go... the widow, the divorced mother looking to move on, the married couple having difficulties, a new relationship blooming. Takes place in the country and you definitely get a sense of that throughtout the entire book. It was an interesting story and I like how they don't just focus on one couples story, but all of them. The ending did give me chills .. I don't know why but I'll be reading the other two in the future

I enjoyed the book overall but kept getting lost on who was whom. The characters all didn’t stand out individually with so many you need to make them memorable in their own right and I can’t say all were. I had to keep flipping back and forth trying to get things straight.
I will read the next one because I really enjoyed so far the midnight sons’ series and promise series.

I needed a light read and this book entirely fit the bill. I just happened to have it on my shelf from an old library book sale. I very much enjoyed watching Lindsay's growth from a city girl to a small town country girl who also finds out that she loves teaching. The impact she has on this small community is wonderful. I also loved that Debbie Macomber brings to light the hardships our farmers must endure.

I am not much of a traditional romance reader but I gave this series a shot. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth by which Macomber developed her characters. The story was believable and not without plot twists and turmoil. I loved her descriptions of Dakota and the small town she moves to. A pleasure to read.

If you've never read any of Debbie Macomber's books this series is a great introduction. She effortlessly weaves together a beautiful small town story of love, hope, & new beginnings. You'll meet a charming cast of characters & soon it will seem as though you've known them your whole life.

I've read a few things by Macomber -- still can't decide if I like her writing style or not. Well, to be fair, I did not care for the Blossom Street 'stuff' at all -- This was the first in a trilogy about North Dakota, and I basically read anything I can get my hands on about the Dakota's. I kept reading it till I finished it, and have the second one ready to go so I must not have hated it. Can't say that I loved it, either though. I *can* relate to the concept of being an outsider, though -- fr...more

I liked the story line, but I don't care for the way the author jumps from one persons life to another in every chapter....hard to keep up on the goings of each individual. She seems to do this in all her books, so for me I will probably never read any more of her books.

First in a 3 part series, about a small depressed town in North Dakota, and a woman from Savannah who moves there to be a teacher there. Very absorbing, and beautifully written, even though the central romance is a bit predictable. Reminds me of Lorna Landvik's books.

My Kindle died on me while on vacation recently. Found this book among dozens of books written in various languages other than English. What can I say except that I was desperate to read something. I would have been better off with my head buried in the sand.
Erin
Sweet, simple and predictable. If those elements appeal to you, I would think you would love this book. Macomber made me want to pack up my earthly belongings and move to Buffalo Valley. She created a warm cast of characters and a little town with a lot of spirit.
Dawn
This was a nice story. The girl was strong enough to leave a bad relationship. Can't stand books where the woman is supposed to be strong and keeps going back to a jerk. Looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
Jennifer
The first book in a series of 4 by Macomber about a dying town in North Dakota. This book features Lindsay who moves to town and decides to work as the town's only teacher for the high school.
Natalya
Very good story with lots of detail, though I got annoyed by Jeb, his character did not really appeal to me, and their mutual stubbornness was a bit extreme. Nice and heartfelt though.
Marcie
I absolutely loved the Dakota series. They drew you in as if you knew each and every character. You wanted to keep reading more to see how their lives and their childrens' lives evolved.
Jackie
This is the first book in the Buffalo Valley series and it was my favorite. The characters are real and you find yourself pulling for the small farm town on Buffalo Valley, North Dakota.
Jennie
I have read some other books by this author, but this one was a little too close to the line on some romantic parts of the book. I will probably not read the other books in the series.
