Sequel to Dark Horse "It's hard enough with two people. Throwing a third into the mix is... I don't know, doesn't it seem like we're asking for trouble?" It hasn't been easy, but horse trainer Dan Wheeler is beginning to build a new life for himself, finding his place in California with his lovers Evan Kaminski and Jeff Stevens. "Nah. It's art. It's not about intelligence--although if it was, you'd have no problem, Dan--but it's more just about impressions, or feelings. Just look at them and let your mind go, see where it takes you."
"So, art's kind of like an acid trip?"
"Good art is." Jeff's voice is warm and rumbling, and Dan really wants to haul his ass into the truck and drive them somewhere private. They have got to get the rules worked out.(…)

Let me just start by saying that before starting this book I had doubts that it could be as good as the first book in this series, I'm very happy to say I wrong...very wrong...this book was even BETTER than the first!!!!!
So did I love it.......

Yes I DID!!!!!!!!!
In this book Dan is settled in California and trying to battle his past and trying to figure out how and where he fits in, with this love triangle. Evan and Jeff are trying to be patient with him and help him through all this but tempers...more

Out of the Darkness is the sequel to Dark Horse and you must read the first to really appreciate the second. As a follow up, the story establishes the threesome and gives hope that they will finally work things out to stay together. Unfortunately the story isn’t as engaging and interesting as the previous book and I found myself wondering why the characters made the choices they did. There is a definite lack of context to Jeff and Evan that is a glaring hole in the third person, present tense wr...more
I have been waiting patiently to read this book. Dark Horse was so moving and left me wanting more so easily. Its sequel, Out of the Darkness, didn't disappoint. The characters were still distinct and engaging. This is really a character driven story, and the author uses that to its full advantage. It looses one star because I still feel a bit skeptical of Evan and Dan's relationship without Jeff's influence.
What can I say about this book? Out Of The Darkness took all the promise from Dark Horse and fulfilled it. I was once again taken through every emotion until I was ultimately left with the contented sigh of a happy ending. Read it. But read Dark Horse first, you won't regret it. Just make sure you have a couple of free days because I guarantee you won't want to put them down.
This was good, but I didn't enjoy it as much as Dark Horse. The back & forth between "I'm all invested in this" and "This is too scary it will never work let's call it quits" was a little tiring. I really liked the first 3/4 of the story. And the ending was nice - not too sappy or dramatic. Something just bugged me about the part in between.
But it was nice to revisit Dan and Chris. They are both great characters.
Edited to say: Was the flagrant use of dude! and man! as present in the first bo...more

This one is better than the first and probably closer to 3.5 stars but I rounded down because I'm currently really angry at my kobo. So the rounding down really has more to do with my frustration than the actual book.
I'm going to keep this short since I want to keep reading. But my goodness Dan what the freak is wrong with you? He has such a strange personality. So flaky and cranky and depressing. He got better as the book went on but I was reaching my boiling point with his inability to commit...more

Oh, lord...just when I thought it couldn't get any better - Kate Sherwood picked up from Dark Horse and made it - maybe better? More defined? Ends wrapped up? All of the above?
I will reiterate from my review of Dark Horse that I have immense respect for Ms. Sherwood's use of present tense. It is VERY difficult to write a story this way and have it come off successfully.

I loved this series by Kate Sherwood, although I hadn't really expected I would enjoy it as much as I did. The idea of a threesome relationship working - interesting. But I think what made it work was the thought that Ms. Sherwood put into exploring the difficulties that would come with a menage. Excellent sequel to "Dark Horse." In some ways, I enjoyed this book even more than the first!

As it was in the first book, Dark Horse, Out of the Darkness is a menages a trois story that doesn’t take lightly the balancing problem these relationship usually have.
Evan and Jeff are an established, and open, couple. I’m not sure I would like them so much if not for the addition of Dan, and this is strange for me since I usually am not very fond of menages. But the interaction between Evan and Jeff had a bit too much the feeling of conventional, meaning that Evan and Jeff seem to be together...more

I liked this. I really enjoy Kate Sherwood's writing style and Dan is a character that just keeps on giving. It was a nice continuation of Dark Horse.
I'm not sure I buy the cementing of the relationship between the three guys, though. Dan's injury wouldn't have changed the dynamics between the three men, so I never felt they resolved the various issues that kept driving them apart. And I really didn't like the extended feel-good Thanksgiving epilogue. It felt tacked on.

Kate Sherwood told the story of Dan, Evan and Jeff over the course of two books, and it was an extremely intelligent choice on her part. With three characters from such disparate backgrounds and carrying lots of unmatched baggage, to rush the relationship and gloss over the inevitable difficulties would have been a mistake. As it is, she took her time and let the characters go through a gradual journey, complete with missteps and plenty of misunderstandings.

I enjoyed this book better than the first one. At least it had a lot more of the three men together even with all the ups and downs. Lots of angst in this book! Yay! The scenes are totally hot! I also enjoyed that the author picked up the pace in book 2.
Loved Chris! I was so happy to see more of him. Dan was a bit annoying since a lot of his wounds were self-inflicted. He sure is a drama queen. It was nice to see Tat interacting with them as well. Loved Jeff’s mom too.

Out of the Darkness takes place immediately after Dark Horse. While Dan is trying to find his place with Jeff and Evan, he's still constantly over-thinking every step of the way. This book further highlights the imbalance in their relationship. I love the connection between Dan and Jeff. Jeff is the calming force in the relationship. He's strong, self-assured, and has an ability to bring everyone together. Although, we find that this isn't always the case, even Jeff has his doubts and fears. As...more
In a way I like this one more than its predecessor, since there more about the relationship between Dan, Evan and Jeff. However, I was confused by the change in Dan's character who went from (in my opinion) a reasonable guy to ultra jealous (understandable when he feels left out by the other two, but with their ex? Didn't make much sense to me). There's also the end of the book (view spoiler)...more
Overall I would give this a 3.5 star rating.
I admit the plot line was very interesting and the story contained quite a number of issues the threesome had to overcome, most of which even couples had to endure. Lack of trust, insecurities, former hurts, jealousy, establishing one's worth and status within the relationship, coming to terms with a less than perfect past and how much of it influences your present and future.

Out of the Darkness, book two in the Dark Horse series, picks up directly from where book one ends. It's a very smooth transition and all of the MCs are present along with several newly introduced characters. Let me start of by saying that I liked the book, it's very well written and edited, and Ms. Sherwood shines when she's writing about horses. Her love and passion shows through. (view spoiler)...more
As the second part to the book Dark Horse, taking place immediately where the that story ends, you really need to read it before you read this one. Fortunately, they will both suck you in quickly to the story and the people.
This one didn't hit me quite as emotionally as the first, but it was very good to see that problems didn't just magically solve themselves or disappear. Where the first ends more HFN, this one ends closer to a HEA, though it could still be seen as a HFN depending on your own...more

The title seems to suggest a lightening of the harrowing pain and angst in the first book, Dark Horse, but the reality for me was more like "misunderstandings, drama, and insecurity explored." Yes, it's a much more realistic menage scenario than what others have written, but did it have to be so incredibly detailed?
It stands to reason that there will be issues with integrating Dan to their lives, because Evan and Jeff hardly know him. Dan doesn't know them much either. Plus, with all the baggage...more

My second book. It's the sequel to the first (Dark Horse) and I really didn't understand how long books should be...which means that I wrote quite a bit extra. If you're interested, the extras should be published (for free) starting in October 2011 as a lead-up to the publication of the third book in the series (working title=Of Dark and Bright).
Many times when I read a series of books by an author, the central idea has weakened and been used up well before the series ends. Not so with this series. From the first word of the first page of the first book right through all of the follow-up books and stories of the series I have thoroughly enjoyed each and every twist and turn and challenge. The story has not grown stale or weary but has gotten stronger. A lot of writers could take a lesson from this author as to how to do it right.

I loved this book and the first one, Dark Horses, a lot. The stories are long and emotion filled...sometimes too emotional. The author did a great job of painting a story that seemed more fact based than fiction. More than once i got the opinion that she was writing from experience and not just telling a story.

After reading Dark Horse I went immediately to search a possible sequel. Luckily there was one and one that was just as great as the first book was, at that!
I loved to be able to see deeper in the world of these guys. Things might have calmed down a bit, but nothing is still as easy as you'd think. The insecurities are there, the misunderstandings and misplaced pride. None of the characters lost their integrity or did anything out of character, which I especially loved.

Really, this book is a part two and I read and rate it as if they are one book.
This one is shorter, the romance is less about them getting together, but if/how they can survive together. We have three separate strong willed males trying to make a situation work for all.
Really, I would give this one a 4.5, but round up. I was lass fanatic about finishing this one than the first, but now that I am almost finished reading the third one (at 1:40am) I want to start re-reading the series again.

This was a great sequel to the book Dark Horse. It takes place where the other book left off and not too much time has passed so you can catch up and not feel like you missed too much.
Dan is still unsure about his relationship with Evan and Jeff. But Evan and Jeff have their own concerns and confusion.
Their journey is not an easy one but the characters are well written and you almost feel what they do.

I was pretty excited to see the new novel from Kate Sherwood. Out Of The Darkness is the second part of her menage series set in horse country in California. I really enjoyed the first book as there was loads of horses, great story telling and a fairly realistic look at how a menage would work.
It took longer to get into the second novel. The power dynamics between the chracters were a little off and often the angst slowed down the story and it didn’t seem to move forward as well as the first boo...more

I liked this continuation of Dan, Jeff and Evan's story a lot, and yet it didn't work quite as well as the first book for me. I wasn't completely convinced that Dan and Evan had a strong enough relationship (other than sex) without Jeff connecting them, to make the trio really balance out. Dan's emotions bounce around a lot and he sometimes seems a little unreasonable. But this is still an engaging story with a great equestrian setting, interesting secondary characters, and three heroes who dese...more

I loved this book as much as the first one. There were times, however, when Dan's wishy washy attitude about the relationship got a bit old, but I found I was able to forgive it in the end. I kept waiting for Chris (not puppet-Chris, whom I also love) to make some kind of confession in one of his heart-to-heart's with Dan, but it never happened. The three MCs compliment each other well, and I believe the relationship would not work without all of them to balance it out. The story finished up nic...more
