I read this book at the end of 2010, and if you follow me on twitter you already know that I raved about it for days. For my first review in 2011, I thought I would start off with a bang and say I LOVE THIS BOOK! It's not a romance - romance, but instead a mystery/comedy with the perfect mix of possible love interests. Seriously, there are two main men vying for Lexi's attention but without spoiling a thing I can say I'm TEAM ELVIS all the way!

This was a fun book. Think 1/3 Stephanie Plum, 1/3 Lisbeth Salander, and 1/3 James Bond.

Lexi is a 24 going on 25 year old woman with a top secret computer job. She is a computer geek, wears no makeup, has had sex exactly one time in her life, and it is quite possible that she buys her clothes at Walmart. Not what you picture as a Bond girl... I accidentally requested book 2 of this series from netGalley, so I found myself in a position to find and read book 1 first because I don't enjoy reading books out of order.

This was my first Moffett read, and I really enjoyed it! It had a very easy flow, which made it a quick, light read. What begins as another ordinary day for Lexi, a FedEx package suddenly turns and flips her world upside down. She is accosted by two thugs with guns in one day, forced to go on a horrible blind date, and BFF Basia disappears. With the help of the Zimmerman’s, Lexi is off on a wild goose chase, trying to find out why an oddly written Polish contract is suddenly arousing so much attention.

Lexi’s chase leads her to some interesting characters. Finn the lawyer who originally gave Basia the contracts is not only sexy, but his Irish accent drives Lexi wild. Slash the super hacker, super secret government agent who is doing everything in his power to prove he is trustworthy. Lars the mysterious karate instructor isn’t quite what he seems. They all are working with (or against?) Lexi to try and get their hands on the contracts, find Basia, and figure out what exactly the successful medical company has to do with the whole mess.

I was immediately attracted to this book, because like Lexi I consider myself somewhat of a geek. I’m not super smart and computer savvy, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m a chick who loves reading, playing videos, and was in my high school marching band! While I was hoping to feel a kid of nerdy-girl kinship with Lexi, I was somewhat disappointed by her ability to become a super agent overnight. Her super sleuth skills came somewhat out of nowhere for me, and while I can understand her ability to mentally figure out the mystery, her ability to almost single handedly take out the numerous bad guys was a little too out there for me.

The abundance of sexy men who come out of the woodwork had me constantly guessing as to who could and couldn’t be trusted. While I totally loved each of the secondary characters, some of it seemed a little much to me. It was a little ridiculous to me that practically ALL the men in the story suddenly have fallen head over heels for Lexi. Sure she is smart, beautiful, and able to hold herself together under pressure, but really? It was a little too much for me to find that all the men had fallen for her.

While the secrets were in abundance, the overall story somewhat worked for me. I enjoyed the explanation behind the contracts, and the reasons for the medical company’s involvement. Without trying to give too much away, I love the controversial topic, and was intrigued by that aspect of the plot. Some things did get technical and somewhat scientific, but being the geek that I am, I personally enjoyed that.

All in all, I give No One Lives Twice 2.5 out of 5 computer hackers!(less)

This is my first Carina Press book - they only come in e-format - and it has a hqn bombshell feel. So far it's cute and funny... but she needs to stop running in circles and start heading in a direction soon.

She’s a mathematical whiz and fairly proficient with computers and although all her work is classified, she’s not really involved in the top echelon of anti-terrorism. She’s a tall, gangly girl who doesn’t have much of a social life, much to the chagrin of her rich, attractive, former beauty pageant winning, socialite mother. Lexi is heading to her parents place for dinner one night to be set up yet again with some “eligible” sort when she is accosted by a large, burly man who demands to know where the papers are. Lexi, confused, has no idea what he’s talking about but the man doesn’t believe her and quickly wedges a gun into her ribs and says that she’d better reconsider and that he knows her best friend, Basia Kowalski, Fed-Ex’d the papers to her. Lexi swears she doesn’t have them and the gun-toting guy gives her a card and says that if they come into her possession, she better call him immediately.

After a very unsuccessful matchmaking dinner on her mother’s part, Lexi escapes back to her apartment where she is immediately grabbed by yet another gun-toting man, who also demands to know where the papers are. Once again Lexi has to swear that she doesn’t have them and doesn’t even know about them. This man, who is of Middle Easter appearance, writes a phone number down on her arm and says that if they do arrive, she better call him first, quick smart. Then he leaves and Lexi realises that her apartment has been completely trashed.

Not long later, her neighbour pops in to say that she signed for a Fed-Ex package for Lexi and gives it to her. It’s the papers – Basia has indeed sent them to her for safe keeping, but when Lexi opens the envelope she finds it’s all in Polish. Basia speaks fluent Polish (among other languages and works as a translator) but luckily, Lexi, through her work at the NSA, knows someone who she can take the papers to and he translates them for her. It’s a very unusual contract between two people, stating that one of them must live in a certain apartment, will receive the use of a car and monthly stipend, but must visit only a certain doctor and several other specific addresses. Other than a small penciled in note down the bottom, presumably by Basia, Lexi’s work colleague cannot see why these papers are so dangerous, other than as mentioned, the contract is not very standard.

Lexi takes the papers to the Zimmerman twins for them to scan onto their hard drive, just in case the gun toting men end up getting the better of her. The Zimmerman twins are brilliant hackers and technological security experts and Lexi is sure that if the papers are safe anywhere in the country, it would be on their hard drive. After all, they are responsible for the security of the computer of the President! The Zimmerman twins used to work at NSA before they were poached and apart from Basia, they are Lexi’s only friends.

With the help of the Zimmerman twins and NSA’s premier hacker/computer security expert who goes only by the handle of ‘Slash’, Lexi suddenly finds out that this Polish contract is tied into a large umbrella fertility company that seems to have branched out into some bizarre surrogacy experiments. That still does not explain the weirdness of the contract and when several other women who have taken part in the same so-called surrogacy arrangement turn up dead with bullet holes, Lexi realises that Basia, who has disappeared, is protecting the last girl left – a Polish one named Judyta and that was her contract that Basia was translating. Also a lawyer who works for the umbrella company has inserted himself into the picture and although Lexi would like to trust him, he does work for the enemy. And it seems that the enemy are doing some very nasty, very illegal things.

I read this book in a couple of hours while the bubba was down for his nap. It started out as a nice simple story about Lexi trying to find her best friend and figure out why everyone wanted the contracts but as you got further into it, it got more and more complicated and in depth. More and more players emerged and at times you were never quite sure who was telling the truth about themselves, who Lexi could really trust and who was a little more than they claimed to be. Although the book is about hackers and the brilliant things they can do, a lot of the details are glossed over and you never get bogged down too much in information and codes and commands. I enjoyed Lexi as a character – she was intelligent enough to put things together but she was also clueless enough to still get into some troubling situations. Her computer abilities are good but she needed a lot of help but given her place of employment it wasn’t implausible that she would know who to go to for the assistance she needed. I thought the Zimmerman twins, Xavier and Elvis were great and actually wished they appeared more! Slash was the one character that kind of bugged me but that’s because I don’t much like characters who are foreign-born and speak English but pepper their speak with random foreign words. Slash did this a lot and it was irritating. I don’t find it realistic either. My in-laws are Sicilian and speak excellent English and obviously, excellent Italian (Sicilian dialect). When I’m talking to them, they only ever speak English and thankfully, never make every fourth or fifth word the Italian one! That would get annoying. They do, when speaking to each other, slip into Italian, but if there is anyone nearby that only speaks English, they lay off it. They consider it rude to speak Italian in front of people who don’t speak the language and wouldn’t just assume that English speakers would understand inserted foreign words, or find it charming.

The ending of this book clearly gave the idea that it was going to be a series, and when I went to the author’s website, there was a section on the Lexi series and a bit about the main players and a bit of a blurb about the second book. Even though it was cheesy, I got into this book and came to like quite a few of the characters, so hopefully I can get the next installment.(less)

No One Lives Twice is a light mystery whose strength lies with an original plot that provides plenty of suprises. There is an intriguing mix of corporate greed and bioethics complicated by terrorism and international espionage, not exactly subjects you would expect to find in this genre. All of this seriousness though is tempered by a sense of humor and romantic entanglement. The book is tightly plotted and as such the story flows well. No One Lives Twice is also well paced, sustaining the mystery and tension to the conclusion. There is also a
There were some flaws in characterisation that niggled though. I can buy that Lexi wanted to protect her best friend and so was relunctant to get officials involved, turning her back on the NSA. What I have more trouble with is that she makes almost no use of her own skills. Any decent geek would have booted up their laptop and run online searches for the missing Bastia or at least run some basic background checks on what she does find out. She also has brothers who are a police detective and journalist respectively but doesn't reach out to them even after being nearly abducted. I think it's unlikely that a techno-geek would be without a mobile phone just to avoid their mother and I don't think much of her anti hacker skills if she can't at least follow the basics of what the Zimmerman twins and Slash are doing. Despite all those inconsistencies, Lexi is likeable, resourceful and entertaining.
Lexi is not sure who to trust among the supporting characters. The Zimmerman Twins, who love a challenge, are friends, but Slash, a legendary hacker, has secrets of his own. Finn got Bastia involved in the mess to start with and Lars isn't telling her everything he knows. Lexi's sudden status as a stud magnet is a bit inexplicable but it is part of the fun. There is certainly lots of potential amongst the characters for building a series.
No One Lives Twice is an entertaining read, carried by a clever plot and could be a fun new series addition to the light mystery genre.

I absolutely adored this book! I loved Lexi. She reminded me of myself--minus the mathematician decoding thing. So I instantly bonded with her. It was almost like this was two books smooshed into one. The first half was really clunky, the main character was annoying and there were numerous plot lines that went absolutely nowhere after we spent too much time getting into them. The second half, however, was quite fun as the character started to (kind of) come into her own in a rather entertaining manner that was pretty funny at times.

I really enjoyed the characters and world of computer hacking and international spies that basically landed on Lexi's lap. One minute she was heading to dinner with her folks. The next minute she has a gun in her face and hired thugs threatening her life. Lexi is easily to relate to and root for.

The best part of this story was the incredibly original story line. It will keep you on your toes and the plot is both timely and completely believable.

Moffett pens a delightful and exciting adventure for this simple computer geek gone rouge. Perhaps my favorite part of this first person novel were the secondary characters. No One Lives Twice has a wide range of fun and wacky characters that will make you smile and laugh. These characters mean business, but yet there is a light and funny side in their complimentary relationship when they work together. I could easily see fans of the Stephanie Plum series really enjoying this story and all it’s eclectic characters. It has that same sexy edge, with a bit of light humor and fascinating characters to keep readings intrigued.

Moffett adds plenty of sexy book candy to this novel, all setting their eyes on Lexi. Yet despite the lightness of this novel, one problem was the revolving door of potential romantic candidates. It was incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to believe that a woman with such a dry and uneventful romantic life was turning the heads of every male character in this story (and I literally mean every male character). I wanted to see one character pushed to front as the guy she was most interested in, even if everyone else was still chasing her around. If was hinted at the end, but not enough to be convincing. Usually with any love triangle, or in this case love pentagon, the reader can claim their favorite. It wasn’t so in this case and that took a little of the joy out of the overall story.

Another teeny tiny problem was the overwhelming description and drawn out plot points. By the third chapter, I think I read about Lexi stopping at every fast food joint known to man, and what she ate there. Admittedly, there was some unwanted detail, but the novel was still a fresh and fun read. Lexi is a great character with a lot of spunk and charm! The storyline is definitely unpredictable as you follow along with Lexi to solve the case and rescue her friend. Moffett takes her original characters on a thrilling ride that most girls only dream of! No One Lives Twice is an entertaining and fun novel for anyone who enjoys seeing the underdog computer geek come out of her shell to save the day. This novel is a decent start to a fresh new series. With a few slight modifications, this series could be flat out fantastic.

I really wanted to like Julie Moffett's No One Lives Twice--after all, a comedic action-adventure story starring a girl who's a computer geek should have been tailor-made for me, right? Certainly the premise is promising enough: Lexi Carmichael is a computer expert working for the NSA, leading a predictably boring life, until the disappearance of her best friend.

I loved this book. I'd like to have given it a 4.5 but couldn't figure out how to give it another half-star.

I couldn't give it 5 out of 5 because I felt she'd dropped a couple of plot lines.

I was pleased to see she has a sequel coming out this summer. Maybe I'll get my resolution then.

The plot dashes along, leaving the reader breathless. I never saw the plot twists coming.

I will definitely get the next Lexi book.

Wow! Funny, fast moving, believable. I connected immediately with the main character. The author has a Polish background and firsthand knowledge of computers, (not suggesting she's a hacker, mind!), so all that rang true. Don't know how government security agencies work but her account was believeable. Great read and can't wait for the next in the series to come out in June.

Eh. For a geek girl in 2010 (assumed based on pub date), she really didn't seem to understand computers very well. And no self-respecting nerd would choose shopping over just doing their own freaking laundry. The incessant "omg I'm so gorgeous and every guy is in love with me" thing also got old.

Shelves: 2010, books-to-review, cozies

the story was good but sometimes seemed over the top. It wasn't quite a cozy but not a full fledged suspense...maybe somewhere in the middle.

This was such a fun read! I love books written in first person narrative and, for me, which made the story even funnier. Reading the thoughts that go on in Lexi's head was a hoot! I especially loved her "computer nerd" friends, the Zimmerman twins: Elvis and Xavier. This book reminded me a little of the Stephanie Plum series, only with government espionage. I was a little disappointed when the story ended. It was a great ride! I can't wait for the second book to come out! I highly recommend this...more

The first page hooked me right into the story, and the twists and turns, quirky characters and fast action, plus some laugh-out-loud humor, guarantees a good, solid read. Lexi, computer geek, sets off to help a friend and discovers that such excitement might just get her killed. No spoilers here, but if you like a twisting plot and a bit more development than Evanovich, this book's for you.
