great book...easy read. Compelling story about a very large animal-I think it was a dog and its owner Emily Elizabeth. I did't know a dog could grow so big. Does anyone know what type of dog Clifford is? One problem I have with the story is it never explains how Emily cleans up after him- that would be one big pile of stuff!

This has all of the ingredients of the ideal book for me:

1) It is about dogs

2) The dog is RED

3) There is a long family history of loving this book. Behold, my dad:

description

So what happened? Why didn't I loooove it? I think those three factors just resulted in the perfect storm. And I am easily prone to over-stimulation. Maybe I just need to wait until I'm a bit older. Maybe I just need to wait until I'm sitting on the can.

"Clifford the Big Red Dog" by Norman Bridwell is apart of the picture book collection. Norman Bridwell has won many awards over the past 40 years for his Clifford series of books. The recommended age to read and understand this book is children 5-8 years old (P)Primary.

"Clifford the Big Red Dog" is about a little girl named Emily who has a very big dog named Clifford as a pet. He's extremely big, has bad habits, but is also a watch dog for protecting Emily. Even though Clifford came in second pl...more

This childhood classic is a friendly story of Emily and her large dog clifford. She introduces you do her dog and tell you all about what he likes to do and how his day goes. The descriptions of clifford and his large size pose problems at time for him which are solved with solutions only clifford can do. The importance of appreciation and friend ship are shown in the tale by Emily loving her dog despite him being a BIG responsibility. Children of all ages will finish this story thinking or thei...more

I love Clifford, the BIG, RED dog. It's not the fact that he's big, and red that I love but the fact that he acts just like any other dog, who loves to chase cars, chases cats, and is good watchdog. As I was reading this story, I was reminded about my beloved and deceased dog, Mite. Mite was a handful at first but one thing for sure was that EVERYONE loved something about my Mite. He was a black & white spotted, mixed pit-bull dog, who loved to run away and go hang out with the other dogs in...more

If there was one dog that is dependable then ever before, it would definitely the big, red dog Cliff. This dog is so true to everyone. But quick question Norman, why is Clifford big or red for that matter? Unusual. I read this book in approximately 3 minutes and 37 seconds. It really opened my eyes up to the outer world. It was strange to think that this fictional big, red dog in some ways is very similar to my dog. For instance my dog, whose name is Dave, and Clifford both stick up for there ow...more

A classic kids book, and a must read. This book is all about expectations--Clifford does all the same things that a normal dog does, but on a different scale, with different consequences (for example, he likes to chase cats, which means he scares a lion at the zoo). The constant reversal/twisting of expectations is what makes the book delightful, and makes me not mind reading it aloud again and again. (The "trouble" Clifford makes is something that is maintained in all the spin-off books, but yo...more

Clifford books are stories that I will always remember because I have loved them since I started to read as a child. Clifford is about an enormous dog. He starts off as a pupy but continues to grow bigger and bigger. Eventually he cannot even fit in a house. His owner, a young girl named Elizabeth loves Clifford more than anything. Although his size can make others stand off and sometimes be scared, Clifford is a big dog with a big heart that would never harm anyone. He is an excellent watch dog...more

Review: I like Clifford the Big Red Dog series. This book lets children think about other types of animals from different colors to sizes. The children have to use their imagination because there isn’t a dog that is as big or red like Clifford. Each page has a few words to describe the pictures. If the children just want to look at the pictures, they will know what is going on in the story.

Learning Experience: A learning experience can be to have show and tell and let the children bring in thei...more

Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell
This is a good book it's about Clifford being the runt of the litter of puppies and Emily Elizabeth got him for her birthday present. No one expected him to grow but Emily's love for her tiny puppy made him grow. Before too long he was over 25 feet tall and the family had to move to Birdwell Island. Where Clifford could run and grow in the open spaces. Clifford is such a very friendly, and hel...more

Amazing book. It shows how attached a child can get to an animal, in this case a dog. In this case Emily Elizabeth had a dog, a very big red dog, and even though he is not similar to all of the other dogs, she still loves him. It is a great book to teach children that people and pets all come in different shape, size, and forms. It is also an amazing book, because what child doesn't love animals!! I also liked the fact that it teaches children that you have to take care of an animal just liek yo...more

This was one of my favorite shows as a child, and I loved the books as well. Especially when I was at school and obviously couldn't watch the show, I loved finding this book among many other favorites in the library and reading it. I'm sure children love (and will love) this book too!
[P.S. I never knew there was a "real" Emily Elizabeth. (shocked face)]

Learning Extension: In class, we would all talk about if we have pets, and what kind of pets we have. We'd ask how big there pets are and if any...more

This is a great book to read to young children. My children loved Clifford. The simple language and the the illustrations of the Big Red Dog makes it very interesting.

Learning Experience: The www.pbskids.org website has a section for teachers. It has fun facts about dogs that I will read to the children.I will then ask them to name dog breeds they are familiar with ( that belong to them or their extended family and friends).I will teach them how to say dog in different languages. Here are a few exam...more

Once there was a puppy called Clifford. He grew and grew until he was really big. He grew so big that he could not fit in his home any longer. He is owned by a little girl who loves him more than anything in the world. When Clifford goes out, everyone is scared by him but really Clifford is a kind dog with a caring, loyal heart.

This is a great EYFS book for introducing size vocabulary such as 'big' and 'small.'
It is also great for introducing different types of animals as part of developing KUW....more

Clifford, the big red dog, is probably one of the most loved and recognizable children's book character. He is lovable, and like them, has trouble fitting in as he makes his way through life. His person, Emily Elizabeth, loves him and the Clifford books subtly send positive messages about caring, loyalty, friendship, and responsibility. In this first book, Emily, introduces the reader to her dog, Clifford, and traces the ups and downs of life raising a jumbo size dog. Even though Clifford is fif...more

i though this book was good for children who like dogs and that things might seem big are not that very scary. Also that friends come in different sizes. Also that you can make friends even though you move to a different place.

Learning Experience
I would use this book to teach colors and that even though you move to a new place you can make friends. Also that if you move to a new place might be scary a first. Also that it teaches about sizes. The goal of the book is that not to be a afraid when y...more

Clifford is certainly the most famous red dog in the world. His story is an inspiration to all of us. I think personally that it is an excellent book to read to children because of many things including the relationship he has with Emily. They love each other so much, and to this day, I am still inspired that they can do anything together. I also like the fact that Clifford is un-realistically red; this I think can really draw the reader and make it more memorable for them because when we think...more

This series of books are an easy read for developing readers/ELLs. I really like the idea of students reading these books in that the pictures depict exactly what is going on in the text. I like that there is a cartoon series on PBS for children because this is something else that helps ELL students with capturing what they have read in the books. Not saying that students should watch television all afternoon, just that this could be a good way for students to reenforce their reading or interpre...more

This book is great for ages 2-4 because the sentences are short and reasonable. Children enjoy the creativity of how a dog can be bigger than it's owner for once. A red dog also makes it an interesting topic. Children can learn that no matter what color or size of pet you have, you should always make sure it is taken care of.

Activity extension: With different pet props we can act out the ways that we can care for our pets. Pets are our friends and they also need love from us.You can even include...more

I like this kind of books because they offer a short reading and is easy to get the children's attention. The reading was fun and kids were making sounds like a dog. That was a great idea to read this book to them.

Extension:
If is possible, bring to class a real dog, children are going to be very excited, but if you don't have one, get at least a stuffed one. Talk to them about how to take care of pets in general, and teach them that they need to be treated with love and keep them well feed and c...more

Clifford the big red dog was the runt of the litter. No one expected him to grow. But when his owner Emily picked him out took him home and gave him lots of love he grew so big that the family had to move out of their apartment to a new neighborhood. Clifford is a super loving dog who cares deeply for Emily. This book is also a series and Clifford goes on many adventures with Emily and they always have a good time. I really enjoy these stories, and have been reading them since I was little.

I loved this book! I remember it from when I was little and I always wanted a big red dog like Clifford. This book had great illustration and is very easy for young children to understand what is happening in the book. Its really funny seeing a big red god chasing a lion and a car. If only that could really happen! I recommend this book for young children and parents to reach to their children. It has easy words and a child could definitely learn to read using one of the Clifford books!

One of the classic series, Clifford the Big Red Dog is great to have in your classroom library. Something about a huge red dog is appealing to young children. It's a great book to read. Children can relate to it in the sense that they have pets.
It's a nice story about a girl and her loving relationship with her puppy.

I would use this book to have students just practice reading to better their reading skills. Any of these books could be used to find beginning/middle/end as well.
Michelle Martin
An excellent book for young children. The learning concepts for children, is the children will learn about is expressions, colors, animals and being a good freind. Also introducing children to different types of pets they can have at home.

Learning Extension

In a large group talk to the children about what it would be like to have such a huge pet as part ogf the family. How would they care about such a big dog. Also have the children draw and color picture of their pet.
Toyin Dabiri
Clifford is a wonderful dog and it is also the biggest. It loves to eat and I guess that is why it is getting so big. It plays hide and seek and many tricks with it's friends. The book teaches about identifying colors and it is age appropriate for pre-k children because it has different objects with colorful pictures.

Learning extensions: Children play hide and seek with teacher's supervision. Teacher and the children practice like a dog.
Thelma Walker
Some concepts children can learn from this book are colors, animals, flowers and the zoo. Children learn that dogs come in different colors and sizes. Children can learn that some dogs like to chase cat and cars. Children can learn thatdogs can be fun to play withEx and some dogs can even do tricks.

Extension: An activity after reading this book have dicussion time and let the children talk about their dogs or pets.
Deserae
Clifford books allow students to use their imagination and think about the problems and joys of having a very huge dog. This book and discussion engages children's imaginary play which is encouraged among young children. Growing up I had a dog and he was very sweet and when I had to give him away because he had gotten too big for my house I was devastated but Clifford's owner got to keep him and enjoy the wonders a big dog with a big heart can bring.
Bernadette
This is the classic story of a girl loving her big red dog. She loves him just the way he is with all his seemingly imperfections. She doesn’t what the typical regular size dog; besides Emily's personality is as big as Clifford's physical size.

Lesson: As a part of the all about me week, children can get into small groups and present pictures of their own animals or favorite pet for social/emotional.
Lori Nii-amassah
“Clifford The Big Red Dog” is a story of a little girl and the friendship she has with her dog. It pictures the pride and love she has for him. It could teach children to look for the good in others.

You could extend this book by telling children ahead of time to bring in a picture of their pet to share with the class. Allow each child to talk about their special friend and why they love them.
Vianey
this is a great book to show children no matter how big or different the dog looks it likes to do everything a dog does. this book shows love and kindness. has great pictures and easy to ready.

learning extension
I would read this book in the beginning of school to introduce a classroom pet and that way they see we have a pet of our own who needs love and that comes with responsibilities.
