Mind-altering Murder (Psych #5)
When Shawn's partner Gus decides he doesn't want to be a detective anymore and gets a real job, Shawn wonders: Is this the end of Psych? Or is it the end of Gus?
After a fellow executive at Benson Pharmaceuticals turns up dead, Gus realizes he needs Shawn more than ever to solve the murder before he's forced to take an early-and permanent-retirement.

I've reviewed the previous Psych books and I can't say that this one was any better than the previous ones. My biggest complaint continues to be that the characterizations just don't match the TV show much at all. Gus is too timid and nervous and Shawn is not very bright in the books, which is not at all how the characters appear on the show.

I'm a huge fan of the Psych tv series, but one of the things that make the show so great is the dynamic between the characters and even though a lot of times they can be two dimensional, the audience is always sure that at the end of the day, Shawn is going to do the right thing, Gus is just as willing to have fun deep down. These books however just have Shawn coming off as a callous and insensitive jerk while Gus seemingly has no will of his own. Also, some of the phrases that Shawn uses are ju...more
The book was pretty much like an episode of the show "psych" & this was my 1st time reading a book by this series.
It was about Gus & how he felt that he needed to move on w/hid life & grow up being in the real world w/a real job alone w/out Shawn. Gus takes a job @ a pharmaceuticals company higher position than his last job.
He later finds out that his workplace has had many swaths & Shawn finally gets hired to help figure it out. But he was in the middle of his current case tha...more

Another fun Psych book. This is so far my favorite of the Psych books that I have read. I have one more to read and I will have read them all until another is published but these are always such fun to read. These books being based off the television series makes the characters fast favorites of mine when it comes to fiction.
This book is about the tragic yet funny split between Shawn and Gus. Gus takes an executive job with a big pharmaceutical company leaving Shawn to run Psych on his own. Whi...more

Love the series on televisions so i figured id pick up the books. They are exactly like the tv series and while reading I could imagine the characters in my head as though i was watching the book as opposed to reading it. (If that makes sense) The books are comical while mysterious at the same time. If you like the series you'll def like the books.
This was as good as my favorite in the series, "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Read", but for different reasons. I enjoyed the evaluation of Shawn and Gus' friendship, and it was hard to read sometimes because found myself missing them being together. I also enjoyed that the author revisited past cases, and that the events in the previous book, "A Fatal Frame Of Mind", directly contributes to the events in this one. A very good read and I eagerly await the next one.
I love all things Psych, but unfortunately, this book is probably the worst of the five.
Gus's character seemed really off for the whole book and he was the main focus this time. Also no Chief Vick or Henry (except for the beginning). The Psych and SBPD cases didn't seem to mesh too well, and I found the murderer to be way too obvious. Disappointing, especially because I think Fatal Frame of Mind (#4) and Call of the Mild (#3) are much better than the first two Psych books, but now quality has dr...more

I thought the last couple of psych novels weren't as good as they could be, but this one was back up to par. A great read for fans of the show.
