Thus, Ian, laird of the MacNeill clan, is doing something he’d never think about otherwise - allowing humans to roam around his den while filming a movie. Not just the fact that humans will be so close to all those shifters, but the chaos he knows will result in him gritting his teeth the whole time.

On top of all that, his enemy is looking for the perfect time to strike AND an American female red wolf has caught his attention when she stalks around the castle against the rules he’s set for the filing crew. Julia isn’t really part of the crew; she’s a romance writer writing what she knows best - werewolves. So it’s a research trip for her, along with a secret rescue and retrieval mission for her grandfather. She has no idea what is contained in the long-hidden box he wants, but if she can get inside the castle, she’ll have a chance of finding it.

But with Ian’s suspicions and her attraction to him, Julia’s plans don’t always go as they should. Ian’s vigilance at keeping at eye on all visitors, as well as his three brothers’ following his orders, and his attraction to her, Julia gets only one chance to find the secret passage to begin her searching, and it doesn’t go well. I like the pull between them that nothing can break, not even Ian’s suspicions. When Julia decides to come clean about her sneaking about, their relationship moves to the next level, trust is established, and their lovemaking is explosive.

I was a little thrown after learning the brothers are quadruplets that they aren’t identical. It’s not until the description of Guthrie comes along (he has red hair instead of the familial black) that I finally got it why there’s no confusion when folks would see them together or not comment that Ian, Duncan, and Cearnach look alike. Not a huge deal, just some confusion for a bit.

What is a bigger deal for me is there’s not as much shifting going on as we usually get in a Terry Spear book, not as much of the running through forests or open wilderness, though there is a little of the forest scenes. That’s what’s always been the highlight for me when reading Ms. Spear’s shifters, lots of shifting and lots of wolves running everywhere. It’s just something she does so very well, and I certainly miss that in this story.

These new characters are charming and fun. The storyline isn’t quite as mysterious or dangerous as in previous books, though the battle scenes late in the story, broadswords swinging, are done very well. All in all, still a great read from Ms. Spear, and I’m looking forward to future additions to the series.

My thoughts:

This story is wonderful blend of contemporary suspense; romance, with just the right mix of paranormal. Terry has a wonderful sense of humor and you can’t help but laugh out loud at some of the situations. The cast of characters is well-drawn and distinct with strong family ties with Ms. Spear’s trademark pack dynamics.

I've just finished reading this on my kindle - do love that I can download in an instant!

Anyway I have read all her shifter books and love them. I was looking forward to this book as we have heard Julia Wildhaven name mentioned in previous books so I was curious to see this sassy women who wrote about werewolf secrets in person.

Maybe it's just me but I felt she was a bit of weak heroine - I wanted more from her. Maybe an argument before hooking up with the Laird, more determination, more heroic...more

(4.5stars) What could be better than an alpha wolf hero? An alpha wolf hero in a kilt - and, even though this is a contemporary, we get multiple hunky 'weres' in kilts. Yum.

I am a shifter fan so I've read all of Spear's werewolf romances, but Heart of the Highland Wolf is my absolute favorite. I like the way that Spear cleverly sets the romance amid a historical movie being filmed at a Scottish castle, so that there are some historical elements mixed in with the contemporary.

Those kilted action heroes do their thing in this story and it was exciting and full of daring do, and I got a kick out of how Ms. Spear wrote it with such passion and intensity. It’s what lead up to those well written and high powered few chapters that made it all worthwhile.

Julia is the heroine and she’s delightful. In fact I had a ton of fun reading her point of view, mostly because she’s a romance writer. What made it so fun? Ms. Spear had the heroine experiencing a scene, a place or dialogue and she’d zone out into writer land and start plotting in her head. I never knew when she’d do it or where she’d take it but it never failed to get me to smile or chuckle. Julia is unusual for a wolf and she has a few secrets. I adored that fact that the author had the heroine, when the time was right; communicating when things needed to be said to the person it needed to be said to. The author refused to fall into that old tired out ploy and rut of angst filled suspicions and mistrust. Sure some was there, it had to be but it was in a natural amount that I could accept and believe in. It wasn’t the sole focus of the story or the conflict and I really appreciated that. I like Julia’s sense of adventure, her stubbornness and her enthusiasm for all things Ian.

Ian is the hero and, wow, did Ms. Spear create a man to drool over. He shoulders a lot of responsibility yet is fair and hard working. He also was like a laser, zeroed in on Julia and his pursuit was delicious and quite swoon inspiring. When she wasn’t’ driving him nuts, that is. Ms. Spear did a wonderful job of describing Ian in all his emotional states, from anger to lust, from wariness to ardent alpha – there was nothing about Ian that I didn’t enjoy. And when growl came to bite, Ian was everything a woman needs in a man and more. Plus, a reader gets to enjoy some rollicking good descriptions of Highlanders and their kilted plaids. That pulled giggles from me as well as a few wishful sighs.

What I didn’t expect was the helpful cold in the tunnel. That was a really cool addition. Not to mention the fact that Ian and clan have been around for a long time and that presented some rather fascinating discussions and dialogue for readers to enjoy and ponder. And I have to wonder about his cousin. Can someone like Flynn ever have a happily ever after? Only readers will know why that is such a challenge. But if a man is judged by his actions it makes me wonder if Ms. Spear might have something up her sleeve for his character sometime in the future. Sure, Ian’s brothers all rocked and were developed enough to get me curious about how’d they’d fair in future books. Ms. Spear seems to be good at hooking future readers with the personalities and quirks of her characters and I couldn’t be happier.

The secondary characters sure helped give the environment solid ground for the hero and heroine to work with. Maria is Julia’s best friend and she’s a hot ticket. I wonder who is going to ruffle her fur in the future. I like Ian’s other family members although I really wished I could have met Julia’s. I was sort of hoping that her family would have actually met Ian’s at some point but I guess it wasn’t relevant to the story line. Everyone who showed up had a role to play in the tale and the writing was awesome.

Heart of the Highland Wolf embraces the best of what romance has to offer with characters that jump off the pages and into a reader’s heart. The writing is crisp, fast paced with dialogue that brings to life the personalities and quirks of its main players. There is humor, drama and a bit of a mystery to spice up the reading experience. When Ian and Julia finally consummate their relationship it’s spirited, enthusiastic and though very spicy, also incredibly romantic, just what a reader expects from the talented Ms. Spear.

I absolutely recommend Heart of the Highland Wolf to new and old fans of Ms. Spear. The author has once again delivered a high powered romance that satisfies on every level. It entertained me and made the hours fly. I can’t think of a better way to spend my time; except maybe to find my own personal Ian.

If you are new to this series you can pick up this book without reading the rest, but the others in this series are worth reading. Ms Spear gives the werewolf romance a new and different twist. Her stories are wonderful. I tell all my friends about this series. This author is an auto buy for me. I have all her books on my keeper shelf. My Thoughts:

A hunky highland werewolf, an old haunted castle filled with secret tunnels, and a romance writer with secrets of her own....this story had a great setup to it. Ian is the oldest of quadruplets and the leader of his werewolf pack. He has reluctantly allowed a movie production company to film at his castle in hopes to alleviate some of his money troubles. Enter Julia, a romance writer who writes about werewolves, and is a wolf herself. Julia has come to the castle pretending to part of the film crew but trouble follows her wherever she goes. She instantly catches the attention of Ian and the attraction between them instantly ignites. One of my favorite things about this book was the descriptions of Argent Castle. It had everything you would expect an old castle to have including trapdoors, hidden tunnels and passageways, and a ghost. It helped to create the perfect setting for this paranormal romance. I also liked the mystery aspect of the story as Julia is getting mysterious phone calls from someone that seems to know all of about her secret reasons for wanting to get in the castle. There were times that I couldn't put the book down as the author was great at creating a tense, suspenseful environment.

That being said though, I really struggled with the romance between the two characters. Or more accurately, I needed Julia to have more of a backbone to her. There were times when her strength of character showed through but unfortunately it was far and few between. I also struggled a bit with the switching of viewpoints between characters at times. There were a couple of times where I was thrown off balance and had to go back and reread a bit. Overall though while I didn't love this book, I did like it and I plan on reading more by this author. I'm sure that there will be romance lovers who can't get enough of this one so I would recommend it but with a few hesitations.

A nice addition to the series. This series is on the lighter side without being intentionally humorous. But there is no end of the world, no evil magic etc. I enjoy the wolf culture in these books. I loved both Ian and Julia. Ian is very alpha, commanding and domineering, the kind that is the 'he man' type. Which I found so amusing at times. Julia is feisty, stubborn and very headstrong. I found that together they created some heated chemistry. Overall a delightful and very engaging read that had me reading as fast as I could. I truly enjoyed the way this author mixed together a contemporary romance, with paranormal elements as well as some scottish highland culture mixed right in that made for the perfect balance for a outstanding read!!! I actually wasn't looking forward to reading this book in the series, but im so glad i did.

Julia didn't really impress me from the other books but i have to say once i got to know her i really did like her. I loved how she had hidden motives for wanting to film her movie at the castle, i also really liked that she was willing to trust her family even without all the facts as to the why.

The premise of the book left me somewhat confused because what the blurb in back says doesn’t match up to what the book is really about. Julia Wildthorn is a Lupus Garous-a werewolf and a romance writer. She comes over to Scotland from America with her friend’s movie production company hiding herself as part of the production crew. Her cover story to her friend is that she wants to write her next romance book about Scottish werewolves. But that’s not her only reason. Her grandfather has told her she needs to break into the castle they are filming at and “steal” back something that belongs to their family. Her grandfather won’t tell her what it is or how it came to be in a Scottish castle-only that her family needs her to find it.

Ian MacNeill is also Lupus Garous and is furious that he has to allow the “invaders” into his castle in order to replenish his clans bank account. From the minute he laid eyes on Julia, he wants her. But once he finds out she is a werewolf, he knows they can have no future. Lupus Garous mate for life and sex seals the deal. Plus, Ian has enough on his plate with the pushy movie people, his clan wanting to be extras in the movie, and an enemy from the past who is determined to Ian to rest for good.

This is my first time reading Terry Spear. Unfortunately I was not able to get a good feel for the storyline in here. It felt very disorganized and rushed. Crammed full of information that didn’t flow well together. I felt like the story couldn’t decide it it wanted to be funny or serious. Julia is trying to jump start her writing career but the main plot of the book is her finding out what her grandfathers big secret is. You don’t even really see her writing about Ian and his family in particular.

I had a very hard time connecting to Julia. She did not flesh out well. Her secretive nature felt dishonest and I could not reconcile myself with her breaking and entering someone’s home based on what little her grandfather tells her. He says just do it and she does it. I didn’t get a sense of the Alpha “you must do what I say” from her family’s dynamics so that surprised me right off the bat. I was also amazed at how bent out of shape she gets when Ian confronts her about her duplicity. It was if the lying really didn’t really bother her.

Ian worked a little better for me. He was more three dimensional and the interactions between him and his brothers offered some lividly and substance to the story. He worries for his clan since he took a risky financial deal and lost all their money. He’s very alpha but shows a considerate side. I enjoyed meeting members of his family.

Julia and Ian’s romance was not a romance at all. It was sex. I expected the main conflict would slowly deepen the attraction between them and offer up a steamy love affair fraught with contractions and strife. That didn’t happen. It was basically he kept finding her in his home and decided if he had sex with her it would get him out of her system.

Towards the end Ian talks about his love for her and how much he admires and respects her. Really? Why? She has done nothing worthwhile in the story. She sneaks around continuously trying to find the “secret” for her grandfather and has sex with Ian. That’s all she does.

Our villain was rather sublime and didn’t make an impacting appearance till the end. Of course, the ending is pat, anti climatic, and the secret Julia finds out about doesn’t even begin to justify her lying and sneaking around.

All in all a confusing lackluster romantic PNR.

Julia is in Scotland with her best friend Maria to do research for her upcoming novel. While Maria and her crew are filming a movie at Laird Ian MacNeill's castle, Julia is doing her own investigating.

Julia finds herself attracted to and intrigued by the laird the minute she lays eyes on his picture. The feeling is mutual for Ian when he first sees Julia.

This book is one of the better ones of the series, due in a large part to the craziness that was when Hollywood movies meet a werewolf Highland Laird. It doesn't sound like it would work, but surprisingly it did very well.

She's also got a secret task given to her by her grandfather - find an ancient box that's hidden somewhere in the castle.

Werewolf Ian MacNeill is Laird of Argent Castle. Due to some bad investments, his pack is having some financial difficulties, so he reluctantly agrees to let the production company use his castle to make their movie. He's forbidden any of his people to associate with the movie people, and has set very clear boundaries about what areas of the castle can be filmed and what can't.

When Julia and Maria are involved in a car accident, Ian and his brother come to check things out. Ian can't believe how attractive Julia is, and doesn't want to let her out of his sight. Julia, however, doesn't want Ian's attentions while she's searching for the box. The only problem with that is that she can't stop thinking about him.

My thoughts:
Another fun and sexy read by Terry Spear! I enjoy her werewolf world and the characters in it.

Julia was a fun heroine - I loved that she was a romance author. The scenes where everyone is reading her books were cute. I laughed when she tried to be stealthy and sneaky and find the box, she really wasn't very good at it. Ian was definitely an Alpha - he was good at barking out orders, and Julia was very good at ignoring them :)

The secondary characters were just as much fun - I'm in love with Ian's brothers and am hoping that they'll get their own stories later on. I also liked Heather, a young werewolf who wants to get out and see the world without her pack watching over her.

Some of my favorite scenes in the book were the movie fight scenes where all the locals dressed in kilts and re-enacted sword battles.

I can't really get into the plot point I didn't understand without spoilers: it has to do with the box and a binding promise handed down between generations. Once things got to a certain point in the book, I didn't understand why it was still important.

Overall though, a fun sexy read with lots of werewolves and highlanders (two of my favorite things!), and as I stated above, I'm hoping we'll see some of the characters again.(less)

After reading her last three books in this series, I had serious high hopes for this book but unfortunately I was let down again. Now come on, highlanders and werewolves, oh yes please! BUT unfortunately not.

I found this book actually pretty corny and full of cover up. Things happened so quickly without any major details and a box stashed away in this supposed highlander castle.. yeahhh..

I don't think I'd read this book ever again.

After reading countless praises for Terry Spear I just had to check out her work. Although the book was slow to take off and I found myself backpedaling after a few "What the..." moments the book did eventually get into a rhythm that caught my attention and held it. I enjoyed the story line, loved the characters enough that I've moved onto another one of her books. Loved it!

Had the rogue-ishness of highlanders in Scottland mixed with the amazing TS shifters!

I didn't much like the movie part, but I overlooked it. It brought back memories of being an extra and sitting around doing nothing for long periods & there was no mention of this movie other than the film crew was at the castle & they needed extras...

09/09/2011: This was just ok, for this series. The heroine, Julia had been mentioned in the previous book as an author of romance novels, but wasn't an active character. Ian McNeill, the Highland Laird was never previously mentioned. All of the previous books in the series had characters in common and relationships of some sort that had gone on previously. An exceptionally good read – loved the mystery of Julia’s family lineage. The interaction between Julia and Ian was wonderful, and you can really feel how Ian loves his family, how he tries to overcome the hurt that he was put through that makes him so non-trusting and the blame he feels for the his clan’s financial problems. The description of the land and forest that surrounds the castle was so beautiful and peaceful that you felt you were seeing it.

Had no idea it was a series but I would like to say it so does not matter. The story was good and the main character was nice. The plot was simple but a good kind of simple. I enjoyed the setting and adding werewolf to the classic theme were they fall for a Scott was good. might read more from this author.

this book wasnt so great! there was a heck of a lot of unfinished buisness...like what happened to the movie? what happened with her family? what about maria? this woman really is not a great friend because frequently through out the book she would just leave her friend. she didnt even go to say hi to her b/c she wanted to spend time with her new mate. WTF? even if i got a new mate or whatever i would still take time away from him to say goodbye to my BEST FRIEND WHO WAS LEAVING THE COUNTRY AND...more
