Behind the Bedroom Wall by Laura E. Williams is about a 13-year-old German girl named Korianna, and it's set during World War 2. She is very loyal to Hitler and her local Jungmadel, a Nazi youth group. However, everything changes when Korianna finds out that her parents are hiding Jews and helping them escape from Germany. She has to decide who she is loyal to and reconsider everything she has always been told.

“Behind the Bedroom Wall” is a novel from the time period of World War II, in 1942. Korinna lives in Germany, and is an active member in Jungmadel, a Nazi organization for young girls. She fervently believes in aiding her homeland by ridding it of Jews, and praises Hitler. She believes her parents are the same way, until she discovers a little Jewish girl named Rachel and her mother hiding behind the wardrobe in her room. Stuck between her love for her parents and her loyalty to Hitler, she must...more

I bought this book for my nephew to do a book report on because he wanted to read something related to World War II. I found this one at Barnes and Nobles on the "Reading List" table, so I figured it would be within his 5th-grade reading range, and it is. I read it tonight, myself, just so that I could answer any questions he may have about it when he reads it, and I have to say, this is a good fictional account of the Holocaust for younger readers or resistant readers. Once they kn...more

This book is about a German girl named Korinna that is also brain washed like everyone else during Hitler’s dictation. She thought that Jews were the enemy and they deserve everything they suffered from. But her parents are part of a secret society that helps Jewish people and behind Korinna’s wall are two Jews hiding. It affected her a lot because it made her feel that Jewish people were also humans and they don’t deserve this. She is still loyal to Germany but then she also have second thought...more

The book "Behind the Bedroom Wall" is a story about the life of a 13 year old girl named Korianna that is obsessed with her leader and the love for her country Germany. Korianna loves her country so much that she even stays at after-school programs, for example the Jungmadel, the teachers make sure that the love of the country grows in the children. One day Korianna finds out that her parents are not actually "loyal" citizens, because they have been hiding jews behind Koriann...more

This first person nararation about a girl named Korinna. The setting is in germany during the holocaust. This book has intense but not fully developed themes of love, death and also hatredto the jews. Korrinna is a german and very much hates Jews she says that they disgust her. The plot and setting is very credible and authentic. This style was not engaging. The author got advice from others well she was writing this book. The language is dark and sort of depressing but not authentic. Though te ma...more

Behind The Bedroom Wall is about a girl named Korinna, who lives in Germany right before the Holocaust. She has been raised her entire life learning that Nazis will make things right and save the fatherland. She also is taught that Jews are the enemy and they don't belong in Germany. Korinna doesn't know how to react when she finds out her parents are hiding a mother and daughter Jew, are behind her bedroom wall. From that m...more

Behind the bedroom wall, by Laura E. Williams is told in first person from the view of a young girl named Karinna. Karinna lives in Nazi Germany and is faced with many difficult decisions her decisions show themes of love and hate. Through the challenges that Karinna faces she and her family develop well as characters and are made believable through the time period in which they lived. The book though not based on any one story tells us of the decisions and trials many people faced. Thi...more

I enjoy reading about World War II and learning more about possible stories of different families. This is one that fits in with that. The greatest part of the story (spoiler!) is when Korinna finally realizes that the most precious thing a person can have is freedon, for without freedom, how could one do the things one loves? I feel very strongly that people need to know about Hitler Youth, and that history does tend to repeat itself. This book is wonderful for students to read for pleasure and...more

I classified this book as young adult instead of tween (which is what the world probably would classify it as) because it is pretty violent in parts--beginning with the, well, beginning.

Different look at Germany during WWII because it's told from the point of view of a nationalist/nazi girl who finds out her parents are hiding Jews behind her bedroom wall. I loved her turn around as she realizes that perhaps the things she's been taught to believe by the nazi's aren't all true--begi...more

Aside from the typo I encountered toward the beginning of the novel, (I'm sorry but I think an editor should've been able to catch, "Papa I'm glad your home,") this was actually a really good book. Of course, toward the end of the book, it was very obvious what the character of Rita was doing to Korinna.

The beginning of the story really gets to you because of Kornna's obvious brainwashing, being part of the Hitler Youth movement, but the good thing is that you see her tran...more

2003- I was excited to find this book, as I had never read a book about a ""normal"" German girl during the Holocaust. Korinna is this girl, and she is a devout follower of Hilter...until she finds out her parents are hiding Jews behind her bedroom wall. The fact that Korinna has quite a dilemma on her hands- turn in her own parents? stay silent and therefore a traitor? is interesting, but the writing was bland. I read the entire book in one night, so if you are curious, go f...more

A young friend of mine asked me to read this book. Wonderful book and story for young readers, if you have teenagers please let them read this book.
We went to a theater to see Cabaret book by Joe Masteroff. The book Behind the Bedroom Wall is like a extension to the Cabaret. What ever happend before and during the WWII in Germany. What is aloud and not aloud. What will some people and kids do for there Fatherland. Is love stronger then anything else and what about freedom? That's something...more

I really enjoyed this book. Reading it made me think of all the children that were brainwashed by Hitler making them think that what he was doing to Jewish people was the right thing to do for the good of the nation. It showed how people that you think you could trust and are your friends can turn up to be your worst enemi like with Rita who turned in her best friend Korinna for acting very strange to her brother who then had to practacly destroy Korinna's house. At the end at least Korinna foun...more

This is a great book to read when studying the Holocaust. It is really good and different from other Holocaust books because it is from the perspective of a German girl who is being taught to hate Jewish people but is shocked to find out that her own parents were hiding a mother and daughter behind her own bedroom wall! The girl is stuck between the decision to turn in her parents for not being a good German or to keep her parents' secret. I highly recommend this book!

at first i really didn't like the main character because she was so committed to hilter and the anti-jewish doctorine. as the story progressed, the reason behind it becomes clear. she was soo wrapped up in trying to fit in she believed everthing that was told to her. it took her slowly coming to know sophie and her daughter rachel that she realize that they were real people. would be another great further reading for those who liked number the stars by lois lowry.

This book was awesome. I know i say that about every book but i am not kidding. In this book it tells the journeys of a kid about 13 who lives in the times of hitler. She feels like a traitor when she learns a dark secret. After learning this she becomes an totally different person then she was before. This is a grand example of what one little thing can do to someone.

I thought this was a really cool book. It's a story about a young german girl during WWII. She's been taught that Hitler is the most amazing thing on the planet, and you'd do anything for him or the Fatherland (Germany). Then she realizes something's strange about her room, she looks around, and behind the bedroom wall, she finds something she thought she'd never find.

FYI - this is a children's novel (upper elementary/middle school)
A great story that shows courage and understanding what is right.
This author does a great job of making you understand how the Hitler youth were blackmailed so heavily that they would turn their own parents in to the Gestapo.

If you love historical fiction I highly recommend this book!

This was a recommendation, and when i saw Lois Lowry (author of Number the Stars) had a review on the back of my copy, I was excited and for 3 days of hard reading, I finished it!
The way the author expresses Korinna's thoughts is amazing. And what happened to many German children.

An interesting ting about this book is that a girl first dislikes Jewish people and than turns to like them
I loved this book because when a gilr finds out that her arents were hiding Jews. She first dislikes them and then she grows to like them. It should have had a better ending.

I really liked this book. It started a bit slow, but it eventually built up into this very interesting plot. I also liked how realistic the ending was. My favorite quote- "...If you're not free to love whom you wish, then what good is love?" What a great way to end the book.

This book is really good. It looks boring but it is really interesting. It is about how this girl and her family were supporters of Hitler. But then the girl's mom did not tell her that she was hiding jews in behind her bedroom wall. The ending is quite shocking.

i loved this book. it helps make you understand the other part of the story. it shows you how loyal germans felt strongly enough agianst jews that they would report their own parents. i would recomend this to everyone because it is just an all around good book. :)

recommended to me by a young friend. touching, an account of a young german girl's struggle with what she's been taught is right and what's she's experiencing as wrong. Even had a kitten thrown in for extra reading enjoyment.

A Jewish girl is hidden behind the bedroom wall of a German girl in Hitler Youth. Excellent lesson on doing the right thing, even when it is hard to do. This book comes with highest recommendations from Aimee Claire!

This was a good book. I didn't get into it as much as the other two books that I have just read about the Holocaust, but I did learn a lot that I did not know. I am learning that you can learn a lot of true things from historical fiction. This story talks about the influence that Hitler had on the youth of that era. The author makes a statement in the Afterword that states, "I ended this novel with Korinna's realization that freedom is perhaps more important than love. After all, if you're ...more

This book is very interesting in many ways because one for the first time it is in a german point of view and two it is during World War 2. I would recommed this book to people who like the history of World War 2.
