Nicole's wedding to the man she loves is in one week, Melissa hopes that her long-time boyfriend plans to propose soon and Seema hopes that the friendship to Scott will change into a relationship. What they don't know is that in the next days their lifes will change in ways that nobody could predict.

Okay I picked this book up on the "New Arrival" shelf. I would have rated it higher if not for the bad language, which I continue to argue is not necessary in most books one reads. I loved the characters, their crazy situations and the funny situations they find themselves in. They just seemed real. I didn't like the fact that they were all beautiful, but didn't know it type of thing. I mean, the average girl (who these girls are supposed to represent) could not expect most of the More...

One of the pleasures of sitting down with a Kim Gruenenfelder book is the knowledge that you're being treated to good writing, especially dialogue. I've read three of her books, al written in first person. "Cake" takes a slightly different route by breaking the narrative down among three best friends, one of whom is about to get married. She manages to give each a distinct personality and these are women you'd like. Nicole is the bride to be, Seema is the arts professional in love with More...

I really enjoyed this book. Nicole, Melissa and Seema have been friends forever. At Nicole's bridal shower, she arranges a cake pull, where guests pull charms out of their slice of cake and the charm is meant to tell their fortune. Nicole tries to rig the cake so that her friends get the charms they want, but something goes wrong and every pulls a different fortune. When the fortunes start coming true, Nic, Mel and Seema get worried that now their unwanted fortunes will come true!

Nic, Mel, & Seema have a strong friendship and that is evident from page one. They have each others backs and are there to help each other no matter what the situation. I think that is what had me liking the book so much. The friendship was genuine and balanced. They didn't give bad behavior a pass in the name of "being supportive", they called each other on their bad behavior without being judgmental or hateful. And throughou More...

I normally don’t like chick lit because it’s all the same. This one was similar but different enough for me to lose myself in it. It centers on three friends who each want something different out of life: the soon-to-be-married Nicole wants to work again, Seema is in love with her best male friend but can’t work up the courage to do anything about it, and Melissa wants her boyfriend of six years to finally propose. Nicole wrigs a cake pull so that each girl will pull a charm that should give he More...

It’s a week before Nicole’s wedding. The night of her bridal shower, Nicole informs her best friends, Seema and Melissa, that she rigged her cake in order to give each woman her “happily ever after”. For Melissa, Nicole wants her to have the engagement ring. Melissa is currently dating Fred and he still “hasn’t put a ring on it”. And it’s been six years. SIX!!! Seema will get the red hot chili pepper. She’s been secretly in love with Scott and is afraid to tell him in fear it will ruin their fri More...

I picked this book up on a whim because it had a cute cover and sounded interesting. oh my gosh, best decision I ever made. what awesome chick lit! LOVED IT!

I loved the story coming from the perspective of all three girls. And the idea of the charms in the cake? I'd never heard of that before (is that bad?) but I loved it. What I loved even more was - whether through coincidence or the desire to make the charm's meaning come true - that each girl found what she was looking for...by a More...

This was a fun read. The story revolves around three friends at different stages in their lives. At a bridal shower, one of the favors is those cake charms? Do you know what I mean? The ones that are in the cake and each slice gets a different one? Well, one of the friends decides that she's going to arrange it so that each of the friends gets the charm she wants. And of course, the cake gets turned around and they get not at all what they thought they needed/wanted. Fun read.

I loved loved LOVED this book. This is my first book by Gruenenfelder and was not dissapointed one bit. I found myself laughing out loud so many times. You fall in love with Nic, Mel, and Seema and you really want them to be your best friends. i was iffy about reading this book because the story line did seem a bit cheesey but I'm so glad I looked past that. Every girl is going through a different problem in their lives and the story focuses on each of them finding the strength they never knew t More...

I'm not a huge chick lit fan, but this was light yet weighty enough to keep my interest. Follows the love lives of three best friends in their early 30s. One is getting married and gaining a new family with two step-children, another is frustrated that her boyfriend of six years refuses to commit, and a third is in love with her good guy friend and fears ruining a close relationship. Nice writing (as in no distractingly clumsy language or an abundance of cliches), the pop culture references may More...

Good, lightweight chick lit that breezes along while actually touching on some deeper topics (can people really find true love online? How do you know when you've made the right choice with your family and your career? What should you do when the bride locks herself in the bathroom?). The characters are a bit interchangeable which makes it hard to keep track of their different voices at first, but it's worth giving this book at shot - by the end, I couldn't put it down and wished it was longe More...

I loved two of the storylines. Nic and Mel's were very interesting, and actually presented some real problems/issues that women have to deal with. Seema's story on the other hand...

I hated Scott. Hate, hate, HATED him. I found myself skimming the scenes with him because it was just the same misogynistic crap spewed over and over. "You women are so dumb!" "Why do we breed with you people?" "I don't care if you're upset because you're boyfriend of 6 years cheat More...

This is a really fun book...kind of a beach book but with characters that actually offer more than just chick lit. Their personalities resonate and they are true to themselves throughout the book. Readers can relate to at least one of the characters and myriad conversations that crop up in the book. This is an easy read...one afternoon at the beach/pool and you're through it...very enjoyable. Really deserves a 3.5 but I'll rate it 3 stars because it is pretty fluffy!

Good writing, but ideologically just not my cup of tea. A woman marries, gets stepkids and is treated like a maid, hates it all the while, then suddenly one of the kids has appendicitis and the woman now loves being a stay-at-home mom?? As my daughter would say, Really??? Seema's story and character were more interesting, but she and all the other characters seemed so invested in "men are this way, women are that way" that I barely managed to finish the book...

Great chik lit! Grabbed up this book quite a while ago, put it down for whatever reason and came across it again a few days ago. Took me less than 24 hours to finish it and left me wondering why I ever put it down to begin with.

The story-line was cute. Characters were great. Though the story of Seema and Scott irritated me a lil, okay, a whole lot [not because it wasn't well written, but because I was anticipating their outcome], the book was very good.

Nicole, Mel, & Seema are best friends the way girls should be best friends-wholly supportive, always up for what the other has planned, and at the ready with booze, ice cream, or a girls night out when necessary. They never call a friend's ex Fuckface (where she can hear) until she's ready to call him that too. I'm not in live with the ending if this book, but it's well written and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the girls.

A super surprise! This book is being passed around my group of girlfriends and I didn't know how I would like it when it was my turn to read. It was hilarious (laugh-out-loud-hilarious) and the girlfriends are so lovable. I usually take my sweet time getting through books, but I could not put this one down (maybe the fastest book I've ever read). Highly recommended for late 20s-early 30s looking for a fun read.

Chick lit at it's finest. A enjoyable, quick and easy summer read. Told from the point of view of each of 3 friends. Starts out at a bridal shower for one of them with a cake pull-each charm has a special meaning. The cake was supposed to be rigged so the 3 get what they want but it gets turned and they all get different charms. I laughed out loud several times and even got a little sniffly.

Cute story about 3 girls who have pulled these charms from one of their Bridal Shower cakes. They planned which charms they wanted to get and somehow the cake gets mixed up and they get the charms they didnt want.. It eventually works out in the end for all 3 and at the end they have another cake for a Baby Shower, once again its rigged and messed up!!

Very well written, and very enjoyable. I don't normally read chick-lit, but I really enjoyed this one. All three main characters were very likable persons. I had never heard of pulling charms from a cake before, but I am intrigued. I liked this book enough, that I am going to read others by the same author.

Once again, another winner from Kim Gruenenfelder. This book had me laughing, had me shaking my head, and had me wanting to throw my book across the room (yeah I'm referring to you Seema!!) I related to a lot of Mel's storyline, and loved how all three storylines were so well blended. It was hard to put down and I highly recommend it!

Read this in less than 24 hours. Fast paced, familiar feeling chick-lit with an unusually high level of foul language. Good for mindless time killing. I was especially fond of the cake pull storyline since I wanted to do it when I got married but never actually bothered to get the charms!

It was OK, but not great. There were a few different plot lines as the story was told by three main characters, but she glanced over the issues that would have been interesting to address after spending too much time setting things up and the seemingly rushing to the happy ending.

This was a great book that I really enjoyed. I felt each woman was believable and I liked that the point of views changed with each chapter. If you want a light, fluffy and fun read, then this is the book for you. I look forward to exploring other books written by this author.

This is a light read. It's not really going to stay with me. There are three points of view, but I had to constantly flip back to see which first person was talking because there really wasn't a good distinction of "voice". I'm a writer so I notice things like that. It wasn't particularly funny nor interesting and these girls were like "never" at work! The book seemed flighty and so were the characters and the overall plot.

I don't usually seek out "ensemble" chick novels, and I didn't know this was one when I picked it up. But I REALLY enjoyed this. The three main characters had very distinct issues and problems with love and life but the way they intertwined in each other’s storylines worked very well. Plus, the title had me at "cake." I'd like to read more from this author.
