This book is to easy to predict, you know what is going to happen even before it does. NO suspense is generated by this and i can't connect with the characters. It is to short and I finished it 3 days, this book may be a better for 8 year old people. These are the reasons that i gave it a one star review. BIG THUMBS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

ESCAPING THE GIANT WAVE
Kyle, the main character wants Darren to stop bullying him. Darren has been bullying Kyle from kindergarten to 5th grade. Darren pushes, punches and says bad words to Kyle. He makes Kyle feel awful. Kyle doesn’t tell anyone because Darren’s bullying will get worse.
UNFORTUNATELY …Darren and Kyle are going to a vacation on the Oregon coast when they see each other there. Especially Kyle’s parents do not know this bullying situation is going on. To make things worse..Darren...more

When Kyle and his family travel from Kansas to the Pacific Coast on their summer vacation, they never dreamed they would be living through one of the most destructive of natural disasters...a tsunami. Kyle was anticipating being far away from classmate Daren who bullies him relentlessly, but is horrified to find that Daren's family is also part of the same company outing that his parents have been invited to. Kyle and his sister BeeBee are left alone one night as their parents board the Elegant...more

What caught my eye first: The eyes, above the giant wave on the cover. Also, the title, given this year's horrendous tsunami in Japan, and the ever-present danger of tsunami on the Oregon coast. (After Turtle in Paradise, my last week's MMGM, with its hurricane, perhaps I'm in a bit of a natural disaster rut!)

Wonderful things about this book: a) The disaster factor. Peg Kehret throws her characters into the most terrifying situations (an earthquake, a hotel fire, and then not one but TWO tsunami...more

This was an amazing book. It was exiting, thrilling, and it allways keep me guessing whats going to happen next. Right when you think that you know whats going to happen next it twist up. This book was about a family of four. Mom, Dad, Daughter, And son. This family won a prize. This price was an Vaction trip to the coast line of oregon. The family was so exited to get an all free vaction to oregon. The family got on there flight one morning they where soo exited for this vaccton. Once they got...more

What would you do if you were babysitting on vacation and disaster struck? If your parents had said "Don't leave the hotel room", but had also gone over the tsunami warning signs posted on the beach: "Get to higher ground"?

The compelling description of escaping a tsunami as it strikes the Pacific northwest makes this one hard to put down. The side plot of gaining the courage to stand up to a bully was pretty well done. The main character never felt that fleshed-out to me--I kept thinking he was...more

When Kyle Davidson's father wins the Salesman of the Year award, the family heads off to Fisher Beach, OR for an expenses paid vacation. From the beginning, the trip doesn't turn out at all as the family expects. First, at the airport, Kyle discovers that Daren Hazelton, who has bullied him since kindergarten is going to the same place because his mother won Salesperson of the Year for online sales. Then they discover that the luxury Frontier Lodge where they are supposed to stay is not yet comp...more

This book is possibly one of my favorite trilogy books and it's by Peg Kehret also one of the few writers that has such an excting plot in novels. I loved it from the moment I started it and I was really holding my breath to the very end to see what the boy and his sister where going to do. It's a great read and I would recommend it for grades 6th-10th. This book is an awesome adventure anyone can enjoy... You can see that the characters are worked at a lot and the writer made you feel like you...more

Before I started reading this book, I had never even heard of it. No one I knew has mentioned this to me or has recommended this to me. After reading Escaping the Giant Wave, I finally understood why.

The way I found out about this book was that I was assigned to read it for school. I didn't like this book too much. In my review, I am going to explain why (or, at least the main reasons why).

First off, I'm going to talk about the "action" in this book. When I looked at the title and the cover of t...more

This book read very young to me, but I was reading more serious takes on natural disasters during 7th grade. There is no sex, very little if any language and the violence is mostly from Nature and off camera. There isn't a lot of detail to support the fear that you feel from Kyle and BeeBee. The fact that I felt their fear was mostly a result of the author describing them than describing their situation. I think older teens would feel similarly to me about the book. They would regard this as a w...more

Aaaah! A tsunami? As Kyle and his family went to their supposedly luxury trip, they happen to bethere at the wrong time. What was supposed to be their best vacation ever turned out to be a nightmare that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. The moment they got their was horrible too. Kyle's enemy from school had to be there. What luck! Also, the new luxurious hotel is still in construction and they had to go to a very archaic hotel. It is known to have built in 1845. To make matters wors...more

I thought that Escaping the Giant Wave was a great book. It's about a young boy named Kyle. Kyle is in sixth grade and is always being bullied by Daren. Kyle has a sister named BeeBee who is also bullied by Daren. BeeBee is only eight years-old. Over the summer both Kyle's and Daren's families go on vacation to the same place, Oregon. Oregon has many Tsunami warnings because they have many earthquakes and are near the ocean. What happens when Kyle and Daren find themselves caught in a Tsunami? Y...more

I currently finished reading Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kehret. This book is about a brother and a sister on vacation that go through some tragic situations. First, while their parents were gone, an earthquake hits the hotel. Then the hotel caught on fire. After that, a tsunami comes and almost kills them.
I believe that this is a really good book, but there were some things that I didn't particularly like. For one, I don't think that Josie should have died! She saved their lives and defin...more

Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kehret is a book about this thirteen year old named Kyle who decided to go to the Oregon Coast with his family for a vacation. Kyle is dealt with difficult challenges like babysitting his little sister named BeeBee, dealing with an earthquake that struck the coast of where the family decided to spend their vacation, and facing tsunamis along with fires. This is not the life most people would imagine their vacation to be, but it is what happened to our main charact...more

I recently listened to this book in the car on a road trip with my kids. This was the first time we tried this and it made our ride all the more fun. It kept a 6, 9, 11 and 37 year old entertained and on the edge of our seats as we rambled down the highway. I think we even had a few tears mixed in there at the end. (Thankfully my 2 1/2 year old had Apple products to keep him happy.) This book is packed with nonstop action. We are grateful to The Global Reading Challenge and Julia for recommen...more

This was a goood book. The main character was Kyle and he thought spending a vacation on the Oregon coast with his family would be great. But one evening while babysitting his younger sister, BeeBee, the worst scenario happens- an earthquake hits. This sets off a chain of reactions that forces Kyle to be braver than he ever imagined! A fire starts in their hotel and the earthquake triggers a tsunami. The giant wave charges straight up the hillside through the woods where the kids are running for...more

Another Kehret book that I think was good but not great. This one had a lot of interesting action but I thought there wasn't much character development. The author basically begins the story and throws you immediately into the action and then just as quickly wraps up the story. This formula probably works well for the intended audience (middle grades) but it is a little disconcerting to a more sophisticated reader. Great action book though that would probably appeal to boys and girls grades 3 -...more

I was going to give this book twdo stars because I felt it was a shallow and superficial treatment of a serious subject I was also disappointed as I have really enjoyed several Peg Kehret books, and I feel that she has the ability to take complex subjects and write about them in a way that is exciting and comprehensible to middle grade readers (e.g. Abduction). Then I read a number of reviews that were obviously written by middle grade readers who loved it. Maybe I read it in overly critical adu...more

When I first picked up this book I was in a rush, on my way to the airport and completely out of books! So I just grabbed the first book on my grandparent's "KIDS" shelf that I saw. When I started it on the airplane, I was surprised at how flipping SCARY it was! The possibility of a sunami on the Oregon coast is probably very slim in reality, but if it happened... Yikes! I enjoyed this book, and for you adventure/thriller people out there, I think you would too.

I listened to this with my son on the way to school. Really enjoyed it. The narrator's voice was a little off when impoersonating a female's voice but other than that I enjoyed it.
The story is about a 13 year old boy left babysitting his sister while on vacation. An earthquake hits but then there is a danger of a Tsunami.
I enjoyed watching how enthralled my son was while listening to the book. He was so captivated! It was only three discs long so it was a really quick listen.

In fourth grade for guided reading I read this book. But once you read this it is kind of hard to tell if this book is fiction or non fiction! For at least 1 year i have been thinking about if it was actually a real life story."ESCAPING THE GIANT WAVE" is sad and happy at the same time. This book was really interesting i makes me want to read it over and over again. I would NEVER NOT recommend this book. I love this book! Miah

This is a very exciting book about a 13-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister. Because of Kyle's good thinking, he and Beebee are able to survive an earthquake, fire in the hotel they are staying in, and two tsunamis. Kyle also finds out he's not a chicken and learns to stand up to the bully who has been hitting him since kindergarten. This book is recommended for ages 8-12, and I think they would really enjoy it.

Escaping the giant wave is a book about working with people you hate to stay alive. A family of 4 moves Washington and the family quintessentially that is bullying their daughter also moves in with them in a hotel. There is an earthquake and as you know, when you live close to the shore, earthquakes can cause title waves. The earthquake causes a warning call to start which means there is a title wave coming. The family must escape to safety to get away from the title wave in time before it is to...more

This book had was so exciting and full of adventure. In it a boy and a girl's parents go on a trip, but while they are gone an earthquake hits. Then a tsunami comes and forces them to go into the woods. When they come out they can't find their parents. Will they find their parents? What will happen to them? Read this exciting book and find out!!! :)

I think kids might find this book exciting. I like how goes beyond a simple survival story to includes the deeper theme of courage and standing up to bullies.

However, while many kids books are satisfying to read even as an adult, this was not one of them. Just an adventure story for kids.
