Sophie is in the last term of Year 11. She's used to moving around with her accountant father and free-spirited mother, so the move to a small town on the South Coast in NSW doesn't seem too out of the ordinary – at first.

But things are changing around Sophie. A new school means a new start – and she's tired of her mother's superstitions and control. Wh...more

This book was ridiculously good.

I managed to get a proof of this just before it was published, as I work in a bookshop, so I carried an enormous unedited manuscript around for a week until I finished it. I didn't even care, the book was THAT good!
The book is Australian, which is nice for a change and I immediately liked the main character, Sophie. It's been a while since I've read any really good paranormal young adult fiction, but this was brilliant. All the while when odd things are happening...more

I think this is one of those books that plays out like a movie when you read it. From the first line I was compelled to read and read until I had finished it and then I had that devastating feeling like I'd lost a friend (luckily I think that there will be more!). I really enjoyed the whole world that was created and fell in love with the characters- in particular a Mr Brody Meine...but I won't spoil it!
I highly recommend this book. Anyone who enjoys an exciting read complete with the supernatur...more

Having read quite a bit of young adult fiction this year, I’ve become rather disconcerted by the ways in which females, both young and old, are often depicted. While in many cases authors work to give us well-rounded and positive characters with whom to identify, I’ve come across more than my fair share of depictions that feel either quiveringly parochial or sneeringly cruel. The former is often seen in the fact that so many characte...more

I'm going to start off this review by saying that it was a massive dispointment. I really wanted to love this book, and looking at the reveiws I was certain that I would. But I didn't. Not remotely.
Why? well, although the plot was interesting and original I am just sick of the whole:
- girl moves to a different town for some reason
-starts new school
- sees mysterious boy
- he has some secret
-hes hot
-falls for him
-he's dangerous for her
and so on, I hope you get the idea.
The characters in the b...more

GREAT BOOK!!! I have read a lot of young adult-paranormal fiction and lately all the books have had the same Blah storyline, And you already know everything that is going to happen...Girl meets vampire. Girl falls in love with vampire. Girl has vampires baby. Teen angst and so on. But this book was a breath of fresh air, and I loved not knowing what was going to happen *sigh*. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Oh and also an Australian author! I'm lovin the Australian authors :D

Sophie is the new girl at school, with a strange and overbearing mother, trying to manage the bitchy popular group and a strange boy who catches her eye. As she reaches towards him, the strangest things begin to happen and Sophie starts to think that it’s not just Brody that is the danger.

As typical as this short summary sounds, the book is nothing what you expect. It is really well-written and a lot more twisted than I could ever explain without spoiling the book. It is quite a hefty read for...more

Burnt Snow is one of the best books I have ever read. Manly because its not like most the other teen reads where its the boy/girl tring to uncover what there, err should i say, crush/boy/girlfriend/love-of-their-lifes secret is. Althought they kind of both have a secrets anyway. But, yes, it was a great book.

Brody's character was outstanding and everything that Miss Badham discribed about this boy was WHAT I LOOK FOR IN A GUY!!!
yes, i know, LAME... Even if I say so myself but is it really that s...more

Burnt Snow. Mysterious. Seductive. Twisted.
Athough this books was mysterious in it's own way, I found myself thinking, "Thats obviously a trap, you are the dumbest person in the fictional world 19." I was sleepy by Part Two, because it became boring. There were parts of the story that didn't really need to be put into the book. I would have found it more exciting if the book spent more time explaing witchcraft rather than her going to school, Brody's not there, blah blah blah. Also, I felt like...more

This was amazing! It was unbelievable. I have to hand it australian authors, they really know how to pace their novels. I remember picking it up at first and wondering '700 pages?!?' but then as I read the first page, then the second, then the third, then the first twenty I was hooked, Van Badham really does catch the readers attention.

So Sophie Morgon is the new girl at Yarrindi and Brody is the dark loner bad boy with a history. This is no Twilight novel. There is suspense, there is fear, the...more

I'm sorry, but I really did not like this book at all. The only reason I finished it is due to the fact it was set right near where I live and that was cool, seeing the mentions of places. However, the two-page paragraphs and a book that was 650 pages long but could have been 250... No thank you. Besides, most of the characters aren't well developed and no real bonds seem to be formed. Then all of a sudden she's on with this Brody dude and they've only spoken ten words to each other.

I wouldn't...more

Completely unexpected but only cause I know the author as an opinion writer as opposed to fiction writer. Couldn't put it down, enjoyed every moment. I

I read this a few years ago and it was AMAZING CRAZY CRACKTASTIC reading.

Wow.
I know that is very insufficient, but that is all my mind can come up with right now. I read it then read it again, unable to put it down. I was trapped in the pages, surrounded by magical happenings, friend issues and a lot of back-stabbing.
The way it was phrased and told was lovely, I felt what she felt and saw what she saw, i was spellbound, unable to look away.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can see myself reading it again in the future.

I really liked this book because of the whole Brody thing. I liked him before i even started the book. I also think witches are really interesting and i havn't really read many books where they're the main thing. But seriously, Brody Meine is AWESOME! Didn't really like the ending but it was rally awesome and it kept me interested :D

Didn't enjoy this book very much. The story seemed to drag on for me and I kept wishing the author would just get to the point already. That and the whole teenager and mysterious bad boy thing is getting on my nerves. Not a fan.
Aislinn
Mixed feelings. Some parts were absolutely amazing and left me wanting more whereas others were a bit slow with not much happening and could have been let out. I will read the sequel though.
elena
brilliant! read the whole thing in less than 24 hours and couldn't put it down; I'm super excited for the sequel. great use of ambiguity to keep the set-up from feeling forced or overly expositional.
Christina
I don't think I'll be finishing this. It's horribly predictable, I can picture exactly where it's heading, and frankly? I just have no interest to pick it up again after all these months.

This book hooked me right from the start, I couldn't put it down. I had to keep reading to find out what was happening with Sophie and brody. What a wicked ending, bring on white rain!

I've read this book so many times that's how good it is from my perspective. I especially like the character Sophie because she is and Aussie like me.

“His eyes locked on mine and my voice went a few notes high when i said
"How could Ashley guess you were with me?"
Brody said, " Because I don't think she's blind."
We stared at each other. We were both breathing heavily.
With one step across the room, i seized his face and kissed him.”

“You kissed Kylie" I protested
"Yes, I did. Right in front of you," he said, stepping forward again.
"Brody-"
Hi face was centimetres from my face. Every cell of my skin anticipated his touch. My head and back were pressed into the door. "You afraid of something 1919? You know I'm not going to do anything until you do.”
