This is book 2 in The Secret Circle series. See my review of book 1 here. This book was just as good as the first in the series. The tension is building as Cassie is black mailed into helping Faye wrestle power away from Diana. Cassie finds herself hurting those she cares most about and also suffers a great loss in her family. Cassie’s grandmother also reveals important information that none of the Circle knew about previously in hopes it will help them battle the dark force that was released.

L J Smith has written a number of trilogies in the YA paranormal arena, and excels at the format. The middle book of her trilogies draws upon and builds the characters introduced in the first novel, while laying the groundwork for the main thrust of the plot that will be delivered in the final book. There was little overall resolution to any of the plotlines in this novel - in fact, it ends on rather a cliffhanger, so you might like to have the third book to hand prior to starting otherwise risk frustration at wanting to know what happens!

Here, we see Cassie grow and develop as a character. She begins to use her power more, and interact with all the members of the Secret Circle - which, in turn, brings some of them to the fore who were merely brush-stroked in the first book. For instance, Deborah becomes a girl that we are able to relate to more.

The reason I like this book and, indeed, the whole trilogy is that the writing is simple yet flowing. It is very easy to read - I swept through it in a single sitting, in fact. The main strength in the writing, as pointed out with the first book, is the excellent characterisation. You *want* to read about these characters, you care about what happens to them.

One negative point for me is that the magic is very simplistic - candles, crystals, herbs, that sort of thing. There is no real evidence of the magic that these teenagers are supposed to have within them, and suspension of disbelief is a little hard.

Regardless, the whole trilogy is worth picking up - if only to see how paranormal fantasy for young adults should be written! Recommended for anyone who is currently enjoying the explosion of fiction in the YA arena on the back of the Twilight craze. (less)

The Captive Part 1, by Lisa J. Smith, is a book about a girl who is trapped under Faye’s trick. The main character is Cassie. She is 16 years old, and has blue eyes, and light brown hair. This book takes place in New, Salem. Cassie’s main internal struggle is that she is afraid of hurting her friend. Her main external struggle is that she is under Faye’s trick.

When I review a book, I usually look at two things, first is if the story is good and second is if the characters are likeable.

The Secret Circle series picks up a bit in its second book, The Captive. The plot thickens, some surprising back story is revealed and Cassie is slightly less irritating. But just slightly.

First of all - I've seen the 'The Secret Circle' TV series before I started reading the books. While the TV series was not too shabby, the series of books definitely ramp everything up a few notches. Πως ανήκει σε μια παλιά οικογένεια μαγισσών, γεγονός που την εντάσσει στον Μυστικό Κύκλο, αποτελούμενος από δώδεκα άτομα συνολικά, με τις ίδιες δυνάμεις με εκείνη και πως ο άντρας με τον οποίο είναι ερωτευμένη, ανήκει σε κάποια άλλη, την Νταϊάνα, την οποία αγαπά και σέβεται. Πιεσμένη ώστε το μυστικό της να μην αποκαλυφθεί, υποχωρεί μπροστά στις πιέσεις της Φέι η οποία και την εκβιάζει έτσι ώστε σταδιακά, η εξουσία του Κύκλου να περάσει στα χέρια της, αναλαμβάνοντας την αρχηγία. Σε αντίθεση με το προηγούμενο βιβλίο της σειράς, που η ιστορία μοιραζόταν πιο ισορροπημένα ανάμεσα στα δώδεκα βασικά πρόσωπα, αυτή τη φορά, τα φώτα της ράμπας, είναι περισσότερο εστιασμένα στην Κάσι, τον Άνταμ, τη Νταϊάνα και τη Φέι. Είναι οι τέσσερις άνθρωποι κλειδιά, οι πιο δυναμικές και παράλληλα, οι πιο αδύναμες προσωπικότητες. Την ίδια στιγμή που μπορούν να ασκήσουν σημαντική επιρροή, να εμπνεύσουν ακόμα και τον σεβασμό, μπορούν να προκαλέσουν ακόμα και συναισθήματα φθόνου, αμφιβολίας ή και να επιδείξουν σημάδια αδυναμίας, οδηγώντας τους υπόλοιπους πίσω. Αυτοί οι τέσσερις είναι που καθορίζουν τα βήματα της ιστορίας και τον δρόμο που αυτή θα πάρει, οδεύοντας σταδιακά προς το οριστικό φινάλε της. Η γραφή της Smith, ποτέ δεν είναι εντυπωσιακή και αυτό είναι κάτι, που δεν αλλάζει στο εν λόγω βιβλίο. Από 'κει και πέρα όμως, η αφήγησή της, είναι κατανοητή και άμεση, χαρακτηρίζεται από μια απλότητα που τελικά, είναι αυτή που επιζητεί το νεανικό κοινό. Αλλάζοντας ελαφρώς γραμμή πλεύσης, δεν μένει μόνο στην επιφάνεια αλλά, προσπαθεί να μπει λίγο πιο βαθιά μέσα στην ιστορία της μαγείας, των χαρακτηριστικών των οικογενειών των μαγισσών φίλων μας και στην κρυμμένη ιστορία, πίσω από την δημιουργία του κύκλου και της γέννησης των ίδιων που καλούνται να αντικαταστήσουν σήμερα, τους προγόνους τους, ανακαλύπτοντας παράλληλα, τους λόγους εκείνους, τους τρομακτικούς λόγους, που τους οδήγησαν, άλλους στο θάνατο και άλλους, στην απόφαση να συνεχίσουν τη ζωή τους, ξεχνώντας οριστικά και απόλυτα το παρελθόν τους. Τίποτα όμως δεν μένει στο σκοτάδι για πολύ, έτσι δεν είναι;

"Ο Αιχμάλωτος", πιθανολογώ πως θα ικανοποιήσει σε σημαντικό βαθμό τους fans της Smith, χωρίς ωστόσο να φτάνει στο επίπεδο των "Vampire Diaries", παρά το γεγονός ότι ως γραφή και ως προσέγγιση, δεν διαφέρουν και πολύ. Αν κάτι μας κερδίζει, είναι το γεγονός ότι υπάρχει μια εσωτερική σύγκρουση στα μέλη του Κύκλου και πως η Κάσι, αποδεικνύεται πως είναι κάτι περισσότερο από το χαριτωμένο και συγκαταβατικό κοριτσάκι που γνωρίσαμε στη "Μύηση". Δεν αγαπώ τη σκοτεινή της μεριά αλλά κακά τα ψέματα, το κακό είναι που κάνει μια ιστορία ενδιαφέρουσα, πόσω μάλλον, όταν μιλάμε για μαγεία. Αυτό που λείπει από τη σειρά του "Μυστικού Κύκλου", είναι μια επιπλέον νότα δράσης, να ανέβει λίγο η ένταση, κάτι που ευελπιστώ ότι θα συμβεί στο τρίτο και τελευταίο βιβλίο της τριλογίας. Τουλάχιστον το φινάλε του 2ου, μας υπόσχεται πολλά. Γι' αυτό λοιπόν, αναμείνατε μέχρι τον Μάρτιο.(less)

Just a little bit of teenage wish fulfillment. Or should I say witch fulfillment? Outsider makes good with cool crowd, meets hot boy, becomes powerful witch. Honestly, what's not to like? It's John Hughes gone Wicca, with just enough depth to make a satisfying read. Oooh, another one! Sincerely, I don't have much to say about this. The book is short and it's over before you even get a grip on the story.

I heard that most of the characters in this series evolve, especially Cassie, but I don't see any evidence of that. If you see any, please show me. I have read this series many many times. It never gets old. Each time I read it, I still get lost in the story. L.J. Smith is one of my all time favorite authors. I found her books when I was a teenager and have been in love with her characters ever since. Her stories are what drew me to my reading addiction. Θα ανακαλύψουμε κρυφές συμμαχίες και δολοπλοκίες και ποιοι κρύβονται πίσω από αυτές. Αρκετά καλύτερο από το πρώτο βιβλίο, ο "Αιχμάλωτος " θέτει τις βάσεις για μια πολλά υποσχόμενη σειρά. Πιστεύω ότι στο τρίτο βιβλίο θα δούμε ακόμη περισσότερη δράση και ακόμη περισσότερες συγκρούσεις και έτσι θα αποκτήσει η ιστορία του Μυστικού Κύκλου ακόμη περισσότερο ενδιαφέρον!

Η Φέι ξέρει για τον κρυφό έρωτα της Κάσι,ξέρει ότι ο Άνταμ ήταν το αγόρι που γνώρισε το καλοκαίρι και που αγαπά και την εκβιάζει λέγοντας της πως θα τα πει όλα στην Νταϊάνα αν δεν κάνει ότι της λέει.Έτσι η κοπέλα τρομαγμένη και μη θέλοντας να πληγώσει την Νταϊάνα τη μοναδική που της στάθηκε και την βοήθησε να προσαρμοστεί από τότε που έφτασε στο Νιού Σάλεμ δέχεται τον εκβιασμό και αναγκάζεται να κάνει ό,τι θέλει η Φέι.Και αυτά που εκείνη ζητά δεν είναι και τα καλύτερα πράγματα.Άλλα φαίνονται αθώα και διασκεδαστικά όπως παραδείγματός χάριν το παιχνίδι του πιτσαδόρου και άλλα είναι επικίνδυνα και βάζουν τον κύκλο σε πολλά προβλήματα και όχι μόνο. Τι είναι αυτό το τόσο επικίνδυνο που ζητά η Φέι απ΄την Κάσι και τι συνέπειες έχει?? Θέλει το κρανίο που βρήκε ο Άνταμ,θέλει να απελευθερώσει την σκοτεινή ενέργεια που έχει μέσα του και έτσι ο κύκλος να γίνει δυνατός και να υποτάξει όλους αυτούς τους ξένους της πόλης που αντιδρούν στη μαγεία. Και για να το καταφέρει αυτό πρέπει να γίνει η αρχηγός του κύκλου.Και χρειάζεται την Κάσι. Και εκείνη παρόλο που παλεύει να το αποφύγει,παρόλο που προσπαθεί να πει στην Νταϊάνα τι συμβαίνει τελικά υποκύπτει.Έτσι η Φέι πέρνει τη δύναμη που χρειάζεται ελευθερώνει την ενέργεια και οι συνέπειες είναι τρομαχτικές αφού ουσιαστικά ελευθέρωσε τον Τζόν που συνδέεται με τους γονείς των μελών του κύκλου και το θάνατό τους και που τώρα επέστρεψε για να γίνει ο αρχηγός του και να πάρει την πόλη υπό τον έλεγχό του.Αλλά με την απελευθέρωση αυτής της ενέργειας συμβαίνει και κάτι άλλο κάτι που κάνει την Κάσι να σπάσει τα δεσμά με τα οποία την κρατά η Φέι να βρει τη δύναμη όχι μόνο να πει όχι στους εκβιασμούς της αλλά και να αντιμετωπίσει τον Τζον και να προστατέψει τα μέλη του κύκλου αφού μόνο εκείνη μπορεί να το κάνει.Και επιπλέον να λύσει και όλες τις δολοφονίες που έχουν συμβεί στο Σάλεμ.Όλα αυτά βέβαια στο τρίτο βιβλίο της σειράς στη Δύναμη που στην Ελλάδα θα βγει την άνοιξη του 2013.

Το δεύτερο βιβλίο έχει σίγουρα καλύτερη υπόθεση από το πρώτο αφού πλέον έχουμε γνωρίσει τα μέλη του κύκλου,το πως ενώθηκαν και τι ακριβώς κάνουν και τώρα βλέπουμε την προσπάθεια τους να λύσουν το μυστήριο των δολοφονιών που συμβαίνουν στην πόλη από την μια αλλά και να δουν τι θα κάνουν με το κρανίο και την ενέργεια που έχει μέσα του από την άλλη.Και μαζί με όλα αυτά παρακολουθούμε τον απαγορευμένο έρωτα της Κάσι και του Άνταμ,την κόντρα Νταϊάνα-Φέι για την αρχηγεία του κύκλου και ο Νικ ο μυστήριος αυτός χαρακτήρας παίζει μεγαλύτερο ρόλο στο βιβλίο.Η υπόθεση λοιπόν είναι αρκετά καλή αλλά η Smith δεν κατάφερε να την παρουσιάσει με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να με κρατήσει στην ιστορία της και να μην βαρεθώ. Προσπαθεί σχεδόν σε όλο το βιβλίο να δημιουργήσει μια ατμόσφαιρα αστυνομικού θρίλερ με όλες αυτές τις δολοφονίες που συμβαίνουν και τα αναπάντητα ερωτηματικά που δημιουργούν.Αλλά είναι τόσο φανερό απ'την αρχή σχεδόν ότι όλα αυτά έχουν σχέση με την ενέργεια του κρανίου και με τον Τζον που ούτε αγωνία είχα για το δολοφόνο ούτε τρόμαξα με τις σκηνές στις οποίες τα μέλη προσπαθούσαν να τον βρουν και συνάντησαν μέχρι και ένα φάντασμα!!-υποπτεύομαι ότι ήταν του Τζόν- και βέβαια δεν λυπήθηκα και με αυτούς που πέθαναν αφού δεν είχα συνδεθεί μαζί τους.Στο πρώτο βιβλίο τους αφιερώνει 2-3 σειρές εδώ άλλες τόσες οπότε όλη της η προσπάθεια να δημιουργήσει ένα κλίμα αγωνίας και θρίλερ στη δική μου περίπτωση δεν πέτυχε.Επιπλέον όλα αυτά τα γεγονότα καλύπτουν λίγο μέρος του βιβλίου.Έχει περίπου 250 σελίδες και στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος βλέπουμε την Κάσι να εκβιάζεται να μην θέλει να το κάνει να θέλει να το πει στην Νταϊάνα αλλά τελικά να υποκύπτει,και αυτό το σκηνικό επαναλαμβάνεται μέχρι το τέλος του βιβλίου που επιτέλους βρίσκει τη δύναμη να πει όχι!!! Αλλά μέχρι να φτάσουμε εκεί είχα κουραστεί από το να διαβάζω τα ίδια και τα ίδια.Δεν ξέρω αλλά ενώ είχε στα χέρια της αρκετές καλές ιδέες τελικά δεν τις αξιοποίησε σωστά και όταν τελειώνει το βιβλίο έχεις την αίσθηση ότι δεν έγινε τίποτα με εξαίρεση τις τελευταίες σελίδες.Την ίδια αίσθηση είχα και στο πρώτο.Πολύ κρίμα γιατί θα μπορούσε να κάνει θαύματα και να γράψει ένα καταπληκτικό βιβλίο.

Δεν ξέρω αλλά εγώ διαφωνώ με αυτούς που λένε ότι η Smith γράφει πολύ ωραία.Εμένα η γραφή της δεν με αγγίζει,με κουράζει,δεν με κρατά,δεν με ενθουσιάζει,μου φαίνεται πολύ βαρετή γενικότερα δεν είναι ανάμεσα στις αγαπημένες μου συγγραφείς.Υπάρχουν σκηνές σε αυτό το βιβλίο που θα έπρεπε να σε κάνουν να μην θες να το αφήσεις από τα χέρια σου,να σε τρομάζουν και να σε σοκάρουν αλλά η γραφή της δεν φέρνει αυτό το αποτέλεσμα.Είναι πολύ απλή χωρίς ένταση!!Πολύ αδύναμο γράψιμο και μη ικανοποιητικό για τα δικά μου γούστα. Έπιασα πολλές φορές τον εαυτό μου να χασμουριέται αντί να τρομάζει με τα όσα συνέβαιναν στο Σάλεμ.

Και βέβαια η αδύναμη γραφή της δεν επηρεάζει μόνο την ιστορία αλλά και τους χαρακτήρες της.Ο μόνος συμπαθής εκεί μέσα είναι ο Νικ.Μπορεί να μην εμφανίζεται πολύ σίγουρα μιλά περισσότερο απ'ότι στο πρώτο βιβλίο αλλά αυτό το μυστήριο που κρύβει και αυτή η μόνιμη μελαγχολία του μου τον έκαναν συμπαθή στα μάτια μου. Πολύ περισσότερο και από τον Άνταμ τον γαλάζιο πρίγκιπα της σειράς .Βέβαια να πω πως ούτε ο Άνταμ έχει πολύ χρόνο στο βιβλίο παρόλο που είναι ο πρωταγωνιστής.Η μοναδική που εμφανίζεται αρκετά είναι η Κάσι η οποία μας σπάει τα νεύρα σε όλο τον Αιχμάλωτο με τις ανασφάλειες της και τα κλάματα της!!Έλεος ρε κοπελιά,ηρέμησε λίγο δεν έκανες και τίποτα με τον Άνταμ το καλοκαίρι!!! θεωρώ τραγικό και γελοίο όλο αυτό το σκηνικό με τον Άνταμ την Κάσι και τη Νταϊάνα..σιγά το πρόβλημα!! η Κάσι και εκείνος το καλοκαίρι είπαν δυο κουβέντες μετά δεν ξαναείδαν ο ένας τον άλλο μέχρι που ο Άνταμ επέστρεψε στην πόλη.Εντάξει η Κάσι τον ερωτεύτηκε που να ήξερε όμως ποιος ήταν??Τότε δεν γνώριζε πως ήταν μάγισσα ούτε πως υπήρχε η Νταϊάνα δεν γνώριζε τίποτα.. ποιος ο λόγος λοιπόν να δέχεται τους εκβιασμούς της Φέι?? Έπρεπε να πάει να το πει αμέσως στη Νταϊάνα και εκείνη θα το καταλάβαινε,εντάξει μπορεί και ο Άνταμ να είναι ερωτευμένος μαζί της αλλά κανείς από τους δύο δεν έκανε κάτι για να την πληγώσει ίσα ίσα που μέχρι και όρκο έκαναν να μην τα φτιάξουν για χάρη της.Η Νταϊάνα δεν θα πίστευε τις κακίες και τις υπερβολές της Φέι! εξαιτίας της βλακείας της Κάσι και της έλλειψης θάρρους γίνεται ό,τι γίνεται με την οικογένεια της.Έπεσε πολύ στα μάτια μου σε αυτό το βιβλίο η Κάσι. Βαρέθηκα να τη βλέπω να περιφέρεται και να κλαίει τη μοίρα της.Ευτυχώς ξύπνησε στο τέλος και ελπίζω να παραμείνει ξύπνια και στο τελευταίο βιβλίο διαφορετικά με βλέπω να κοιμάμαι.Τώρα όσον αφορά τη Φέι την αρχηγό των κακών ούτε εδώ μπορώ να πω ότι έχω ενθουσιαστεί.Υπάρχουν άλλοι κακοί σε άλλα βιβλία που σε κάνουν να τρέμεις,σου σηκώνεται η τρίχα διαβάζοντας τα όσα λένε ή κάνουν εδώ πάλι έχουμε μία δεκαεπτάχρονη μάγισσα η οποία απολαμβάνει να κάνει κακίες έτσι επειδή της αρέσει και κάνει τη μια βλακεία πίσω απ΄την άλλη και ουσιαστικά πρέπει να την κλείσουν και φυλακή γιατί έχει μεγάλο μερίδιο ευθύνης για ό,τι έγινε στο τέλος.Ο μόνος ενδιαφέρων κακός είναι ο Τζον ελπίζω η Smith να μπορέσει να αναπτύξει τον χαρακτήρα του σωστά!! κρατώ μικρό καλάθι βέβαια έχοντας διαβάσει τα δύο πρώτα βιβλία της αλλά ελπίζω στο τρίτο να έχει κάνει καλύτερα πράγματα.

Ούτε για το ρομάντζο έχω να πω καλύτερα λόγια. Βασικά ποιο ρομάντζο?? δεν γίνεται τίποτα σε όλο το βιβλίο!!Ο Άνταμ και η Κάσι έχουν κάνει αυτόν τον όρκο να μείνουν μακριά ο ένας απ'τον άλλο εκείνος συνεχίζει να βγαίνει με την Νταϊάνα εκείνη να κλαίει στα σκοτάδια για την αγάπη που δεν μπορεί να ζήσει,σε όλο το βιβλίο πρέπει να ανταλλάσσουν τρεις κουβέντες και αυτές χωρίς συναίσθημα!! δηλαδή εντάξει πως να σου αρέσει ένα ζευγάρι όταν σε όλο το βιβλίο δεν γίνεται τίποτα!!! και άντε να πω πως με την Νταϊάνα ταιριάζει καλύτερα ο Άνταμ..σιγά!! ούτε εκεί βλέπω συναίσθημα,ούτε έρωτα ούτε τίποτα.Αλλά θα μπορούσε να πει κάποιος ότι ο έρωτας είναι ανάμεσα στον Άνταμ και την Κάσι. Ναι ωραία αλλά δείξτε το και στους αναγνώστες ρε παιδιά!!! εντάξει δεν είπα να απατήσει την άλλη κοπέλα αλλά στις σκηνές που θα έχουν μαζί να φαίνεται ο απαγορευμένος έρωτας,η προσπάθεια να αντισταθούν και να μην κάνουν κάτι λάθος!! δεν ένιωσα τίποτα απ'όλα αυτά.Πιο πολύ συναίσθημα είχαν οι διάλογοι της Κάσι με τον Νικ-μου φαίνεται ότι αυτός κάτι νιώθει για εκείνη-παρά με τον έρωτα της ζωής της..

Η σειρά αυτή βιβλίων πέρυσι έγινε και σειρά η οποία βέβαια κόπηκε λόγω χαμηλής τηλεθέασης.Αλλά ειλικρινά έχοντας πλέον διαβάσει και τα βιβλία νομίζω ότι οι σεναριογράφοι έκαναν πολύ καλύτερη δουλειά.Πήραν δύο μέτρια βιβλία-για το τρίτο δεν μπορώ να μιλήσω ακόμα-και έγραψαν ένα πολύ καλό σενάριο αρκετά δυναμικό.Άλλο που οι τηλεθεατές δεν ακολούθησαν αλλά η τηλεοπτική σειρά χωρίς καμιά αμφιβολία για μένα είναι πολύ καλύτερη από τα βιβλία...Είχα σκοπό μετά τον μυστικό κύκλο να διαβάσω και τα Vampire Diaries που είναι της ίδιας συγγραφέως αλά τώρα το σκέφτομαι.Η γραφή της δεν μ'αρέσει καθόλου με κουράζει πολύ και αν η Ελένα είναι τόσο ανυπόφορη όπως στην τηλεοπτική σειρά θα πρέπει να με κρατούν κάπου δεμένη για να διαβάσω τα βιβλία και να μην τ'αφήσω.

Σε γενικές γραμμές ο αιχμάλωτος κατά τη γνώμη μου κινήθηκε στα ίδια επίπεδα με το πρώτο βιβλίο,δεν έγινε ουσιαστικά τίποτα παρόλο που θα μπορούσαν να γίνουν τα πάντα.Τουλάχιστον προς το τέλος μας αποκάλυψε κάτι αλλά μετά από τόση κούραση και βαρεμάρα που μου δημιούργησε το υπόλοιπό βιβλίο μόνο δύο αστεράκια μπορώ να του βάλω και τίποτε άλλο.Κρίμα γιατί είχα την ελπίδα ότι αυτό το βιβλίο θα ήταν διαφορετικό. Και κρίμα γιατί είχα διαβάσει πολλά για τη γραφή της Smith αλλά δυστυχώς για τα δικά μου κριτήρια είναι μια αδύναμη συγγραφέας με γραφή κουραστική και βαρετή.Λυπάμαι...

The Captive Part 1 is the first part of the second instalment in The Secret Circle book series written by L. J. Smith. When the book series was first published back in 1992, both parts of The Captive were published in one book. I have made the decision to review The Captive Part 1 and The Captive Part 2 separately rather than as a whole because I like to review books as I read them.

The Captive Part 1 continues where The Initiation left off. Following the events that occurred in The Initiation, protagonist Cassie Blake becomes a victim of blackmail from fellow 'club' member Faye Chamberlain. Faye tightens her hold on Cassie by blackmailing her over her love for Adam Conant and in doing so puts Cassie in an impossible situation of betraying her friend and Adam's girlfriend Diana Meade. The plot line thickens in this instalment. Not only does the reader experience Cassie's turmoil of being blackmailed, but the coven of young witches experience dark magic from the crystal skull found in The Initiation.

Unlike in The Initiation, there is more suspense within the plot. This is most likely down to the fact that the reader is unsure about what is going to happen. In the first instalment, it was inevitable that Cassie would find out she is a witch and that the good-looking mysterious guy Cassie meets at the beginning of The Initiation would end up becoming a love interest for Cassie. The Initiation was simply a “setting-up” book which left the plot wide open for The Captive. By this I mean, the reader is left unsure of what is going to happen next. As a result of this, The Captive Part 1 had me on the edge of my seat. The plot develops in a way that will leave the reader wanting to continue with the story in order to find out what is going to happen next. This was certainly the case for me and enabled me to finish the book in one sitting alone.

For me, the characters came more into themselves in this instalment. One thing I cannot seem to fault L. J. Smith on is her ability to create strong, believable characters. For some reason, and I really cannot offer a reason why, I've began to tire of Diana. However this is not because she has not been wrote well or that she isn't realistic. I suppose the only explanation I can offer is that I prefer characters to have some flaws attached to them.

The attraction between Cassie and Adam is still present in this instalment but I would have liked to have read more about it. Saying this, I'm hopeful I will do so in the second part, The Captive Part 2.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Captive Part 1. Upon completion, I was left eager to continue with the series to learn more about Cassie, Adam and the other coven members. L. J. Smith, for me, has beautifully created a unique, enthralling piece of work and I'm beginning to love this series. I would recommend for fans of fantasy literature, teenagers and adults alike. Fans of the television series adapted from these books will also enjoy The Secret Circle books.

When they vote for the leadership of their coven between Faye and Diana they have a tie. To everyones dismay Cassie votes for Faye breaking the tie and Faye becomes the leader. Cassie runs off down the beach and Adam follows her and tells her he knows that Faye made her do it some how. She kisses him and tells him to go back to the others, she is going back to congratulate their new leader. Faye tells Cassie to get the skull, everyone is surprised that she knows where it is, Diana is the only one that is suppose to know where it is. Faye plans on using the skull to get its power. They go to the cemetery and make a circle to get the skulls power. They only succeed in releasing a dark energy, which is Black John.

They follow Black John to Cassie’s house. They find Cassie’s mom in a daze like a doll and her grandmother laying on the floor with Black John leaning over her. Cassie uses her powers to make Black John leave. Her grandmother tells Cassie that she is a very powerful witch and she is the only one that can get rid of Black John.

Cassie goes outside and sees her circle their, she looks for Faye and tells her it is over. She will not do her biding anymore and that she can tell Diana everything. I think Cassie did this to have everything out in the open and no secrets because this is probably the only way to stop evil. You fight evil with good, I think that is want Cassie was thinking, what she knows. I hope that now Cassie is tired of being The Captive and in the next book The Power that she has woke up and she will becomes the leader that she is. L. J. Smith has a very good imagination which is a good requirement for a writer and can write some great books. I recommend The Captive to any one who loves to read a great book. (less)

"Der Verrat" ist der zweite Teil der Zirkel-Trilogie.
Nachdem ich bereits vom ersten Band sehr begeistert war, konnte sich Lisa J. Smith mit diesem Band noch einmal steigern. Die Handlung wirkt düsterer und mit dem Friedhof kommt ein weiterer, gruseliger Ort hinzu. Insgesamt wird die Handlung intensiver und flüssiger erzählt als sein Vorgänger. Besonders gut ist hier, wie auf die Geschichte der Hexen eingegangen wird, denn dies kam mir im ersten Band eindeutig zu kurz. Als Leser erfährt man mehr über New Salem, den Hexenfamilien und Geheimnisse werden gelüftet, die ich vorher nicht wirklich erahnen konnte.

Bislang waren die Charaktere die große Schwachstelle, dies ändert sich aber nun zum Großteil.
Cassie bekommt endlich die nötigen Ecken und Kanten, die ich sehr an ihr vermisst habe. Sie denkt mittlerweile mehr an sich und himmelt Diana nicht mehr so an, wie im ersten Band. Allgemein habe ich ihre Bewunderung nie verstehen können. Inzwischen wirkt Cassie selbständig und selbstbewusster, was ihr sehr gut steht. Eine tolle Entwicklung.
Diana bleibt dagegen weiterhin vollkommen farblos und der Gutmensch schlechthin, der alles glaubt und in jedem noch das Gute sieht. Ihre Liebe zu Adam ist bodenlos selbstlos, hier habe ich in so manchen Situationen nur den Kopf schütteln können.
Wirklich gut gefällt mir dagegen Faye. Im ersten Band ist sie mir noch nicht allzu groß aufgefallen. Zwar war sie immer anwesend, aber kein Charakter, den ich unbedingt lange im Gedächtnis hatte. Doch nun ändert sich das völlig. Sie steht in direkter Konkurrenz mit Diana, denn auch sie möchte die Anführerin des Hexenzirkels werden - und dafür geht sie über Leichen. Zwar ist dies nicht die feine englische Art, aber dafür tut sie der Geschichte unglaublich gut.

Wie auch schon beim ersten Band irritiert mich hier die Covergestaltung, denn es ist weiterhin nicht zu erkennen, wer die Person auf dem Cover sein soll. Weder Cassie, noch Diana oder Faye stellen das Mädchen auf dem Cover dar. Hier wäre es besser gewesen, wenn man eine passendere Person für dieses Cover ausgesucht hätte. Dennoch sieht es nicht schlecht aus, passt jedoch nicht zur Handlung.

Insgesamt hat mir der zweite Band der Zirkel Trilogie besser als der erste Band gefallen. Zwar konnte dieser mich schon mit seiner wunderbaren Handlung in den Bann ziehen, aber dieses Buch ist eine Steigerung von 100 %. Lisa J. Smith ist und bleibt eine Garantie für gute Bücher. (less)

Woot, just reread this! My main point? I wish that they had taken the last scene (actually, all of it) and at least stuck that one into the tv show. Eerie red lights and weird shadow figures killing grandma's? Freaky as shit! Instead, we get parents murdering their parents. Yeah, that might be more 'realistic' in a witch drama show. Maybe. Actually, a demon/devil/spirit dude killing for revenge is a lot more likely of a scenario.

Completely easy to read by now, but it's still a good book. This on...more

Another fun read, although Cassie allowing herself to be manipulated and blackmailed was sort of frustrating. Also, the similarities between this particular volume and the Vampire Diaries was a little annoying. High school dance in the gym, evil in the graveyard, jock gets murdered while everyone is partying? Maybe if I hadn't already finished the other series I would have been more captivated, but to me it was a little cliche and formulaic, like a Nicolas Sparks novel.

Fast paced and nice.. But the cliff hanger is predictable..
Here, we still don't know what powers does Cassie has or much of the others too.

Diana is a bit too naive and trusting.

Just loved Faye.. Faye stealed the show in this book.. She's been portrayed very well.

And still no progress from Nick.. :'( he has potential..

Deb is another person to look out for.. Rest of the gang was in the background..

Loved the Henderson brothers too...

Honestly, I watched the show on Netflix and thought it was fun. So I decided to download the first book(s) on my kindle iPhone app. I'm often caught in the car while my son naps with nothing but my iPhone. I downloaded a free sample and found it fun and compelling. So I bought the first book(s). And the next book. And the next. Not great writing but compelling and entertaining. The author definitely captures the drama and self-involvement of being a teenager, with the added bonus of witches.

The first book took a while for me to get into, because of the character development but this one had me from page one to the end.

I've never been into the 'teen-supernatural-romance' genre, like Twilight, Vampire Diaries and such, at least not the book versions. This one, although I watch the show and love it, is brilliant.

It's nothing like the TV series, which is great because it's it's own adventure, but it's also not so unlike it that you can't relate or see the characters in your head.
