Stalemate (Eve Duncan #7)
Eve Duncan has turned down the job twice already. Her skill and devotion in identifying murder victims and helping bring their killers to justice may be world-renowned. But Eve works exclusively for law enforcement and the families of the innocent, and the man on the other end of the phone is many things-none of them law-abiding or innocent.

I really enjoyed the early "Eve Duncan" series books. I have to say, the more I read or listen to, the less I enjoy them. At least this one focused on Eve, not Eve's adopted daughter, which has been my complaint with some in the series.
The thing I liked least about this one was the reader. She sounded like a Russian while speaking the dialogue for a Columbian named Gonsalvo. In fact several Colmbians. Oh, and the text specifically said (as read) that Galen (r...more

CLEVER PLOT AND PROMISES OF MANY MORE EVE STORIES
IMO:
You have to presuppose that the reader has an abhorrence of `disturbing the dead', or had a clear understanding and sides with the concept of `returning home' the remains of a murdered loved one. Frankly, I have neither. I was raised next door to a cemetery, and spent countless hours reading and playing in the graveyard, hiding behind the trees and big tombstones, when a formal grave side service took place. Luis Montalvo is a Columbian who deals in the illegal selling of arms. Eve Duncan is the best forensic sculptor in the world. Moltalvo has contacted Eve to work on a reconstruction for him at his compound in Columbia. Eve says absolutely not until...he promises to bring home her Bonnie. Against the words of her partner and lover,Joe Quinn, she goes to work on Montalvo's skull. She is lured in to more danger than she can ever imagine. She will have to face the nastiest man alive, and it's not Mon...more

Eve Duncan, a re-occurring character, is what is called a "forensic sculptor," which means she takes a skull and sculpts over it her interpretation of the face, based upon forensic measurements and - to a great extent - intuition. She has never yet been proved wrong. However, she generally works for families of missing children or law enforcement agencies - hoping with each skull she brings home, she might find her own 7yr old daughter, Bonnie, missing and presumed dead for many years.

When I saw Bob's review of Quinn, I knew I'd read one from the series, but had to start from the beginning to find which. The idea of skull reconstruction is dwelt on from the artistic viewpoint, rather than gruesome, but the author dwells on the heroine's angst and frustration, trying to escape in work. I preferred the action scenes, over worrying. Been too long to recall details, but I think there was a twist that the "bad guy" really had good and tragic motives. Eve is threatened to get her t...more
So, I apparently decided to jump into this series about Eve Duncan at a very crucial point. Eve is enlisted to help a questionable man find the answer to the disappearance of his wife in exchange for him promising to help Eve solve the mystery of her own daughter. Well written and draws you in. I immediately grabbed the next one in the series when I finished this and will likely go back to the beginning to get all of the back story. My only issue with the book was an issue with the order things...more
I have loved iris johansen since I was a teenager. My only problem that plagued me as I continued to read her Eve Duncan series was how does so much drama and life challenging adventures follow one person around? And in the last several years, I find the phrase shut him out (as in Eve hates to shut joe out, Eve must shut Joe out, Joe expects Eve to shut her out, Joe gets mad Eve shuts her out, etc) and it just aggravates me because I like the characters, like the series, and hate that everyone i...more
I got a Great Story and a Good dose of Forensic Science!
My good friend told me about this book, since she knew I got "hooked" on the field of forensic medicine after watching a certain tv show. Tv is fine, but for me nothing is better than a good novel that can weave a story around a subject that I'm interested in. Anyway I thought "Stalemate" was a fantastic novel and the forensic professor Eve Duncan was just the character I was looking for to keep me hooked on the field of forensic science. I...more

Eve Duncan is on a mission. Luis Montalvo has promised to lead her to her daughters killer if she will reconstruct his wifes skull. The job is rife with danger as warring factions are at each others throats with Eve and Joe in the middle. Deep in the jungles of Columbia Eves dedication to Joe and her work is tested. Sparks fly and the atmosphere is electric with conflict.

Iris Johansen takes you on a journey to Columbia in this Eve Duncan Forensics Thrill. Although, this story is a bit further in the series, enough detail is provided that a new reader understands the characters and how they belong in the story (this is something I have always appreciated about I. Johansen's series). Moltalvo (sp?), a criminal, weapons dealer seeks Eve's skills as a forensic facial restructor to aid him, but aid him with what? Could it be worth a million dollars or worth a promise...more
I've been reading detective murder mysteries mostly for the last 6 months or so. Stalemate was a good change of pace for me. It's more of a action and suspense type of read with a little bit of paranormal. It's the first (for me) of the Eve Duncan series and it's a realitively recent book and series(2007) The characters are strong and there's not to many to keep track of. Iris Johansen has 45 books in my library alone so there's plenty to read from this author.

Drives me nuts that I picked up a book that's part of a series ... but I really enjoyed it, regardless! Now I'll have to think about going back and reading 1-6 in the series, and DEFINITELY will need to pick up #8.
Eve is given the opportunity to discover the truth of the thing that matters most to her, and she grabs at it - despite the danger involved. She tries to take steps to keep others safe, but of course they don't necessarily work. And, worst of all, she must make a deal with the devil .....more

I really enjoyed this book
With Iris Johansen it seems a bit of a hit or miss whether I enjoy the book.
i likeed the fast pace action but the story is strikingly similar to the face of deception.
Spoiler alert
This is the blurb for both books:-
Eve is pushed , munipulated, blackmailed into helping a guy who has yet to get the skull. retrieving the skull is dangerous-bing shot at.
The retrieval of the skull is hazardous to another party that doesn't won't it to happen and is a surprise to someone . It...more

This is the first Iris Johansen book I've read and it's not bad. Her writing style was fluid but since this is the 6th book in the Eve Duncan series (correct me if I'm wrong), it was like surfing the channels and stumbling upon a middle of a show.
What made me pick up this book is the suspense, I didn't expect anything but the suspense was effective. It wasn't like the other books I've read the ratcheted up my heart rate and kept me on the edge, but I still appreciate the mystery and how it made...more

The more I've thought about it...the more I've realized I really didn't like this book. While it was classic Iris Johansen with a high paced suspensful style the story left me flat. I've read a couple of the other Eve Duncan books...but it had been a while so I didn't remember back story much. So, coming into this book I was missing a lot. While those things could be the reasons a person wouldn't like a book...they weren't the reasons I didn't like this one. Eve contantly shuts out Joe...the man...more

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan is taken to the dark edge of a battle between drug lords, and an equally dark edge between two romantic rivals -- one with whom she’s had an enduring but tense relationship for some time, and the other with whom she shares an emotional obsession. All the elements are there to bring together a fast-paced thriller that’ll keep you turning pages, but force you to roll your eyes at the leap required for believability.

I've been a long-time fan of Iris Johansen, especially the Eve Duncan series. Although STALEMATE is decidedly different from the other stories starring Eve Duncan from the past, I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed it--so much so that I stayed up until 3am to finish the book.
Yes, the Eve in this story isn't the saintly, never-do-anything-wrong Eve that many readers have come to know and love. She becomes attracted to a bad guy who, at least in the beginning of the story, is the mother of a...more

I am willing to suspend disbelief if I really like a book. However, I couldn't make myself suspend disbelief. The main character came across as extremely self-centered. She almost got her husband killed on a couple of occasions and didn't seem to care because she wanted what she wanted. She also had a weird sexual chemistry with a guerrilla solider which really made no sense.
I have read other books in the series and liked them. Don't read this one.

Another outing for forensic artist Eve Duncan as she travels to Colombia to reconstruct the face of another murdered woman. Her fee: the promise of help finding the killer of her 7-y-o daughter many years ago.
This was a good story with lots of angst and action. Frankly, though, I'm tired of the angst on the part of Eve and I'm tired of this character. Johansen should get the dead daughter settled in her grave (and I think she does in the next book).

I have not read any of the other books in the Eve Duncan series, and this doesn't make me want to go back and start. Eve is so beautiful and ethical and BORING. I don't care if she is having problems with her significant other Joe (who is ex CIA/Police/Seal. I am not making that up). I don't care about her dead daughter. I don't care about Montalvo, the weapons dealer with a heart. It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't good.

This book was entertaining and a quick read, but seemed so far-fetched and unrealistic that I had a hard time finishing it. The book was lacking in character development, and depth in general. However this was the first Iris Johansen book I've read (there were several Eve Duncan books preceding this one) so I know I missed Eve's history, but even the secondary characters were lacking. It just didn't come together for me.
I've been flying through these books, partly because I'm still sick but also because they're so good. I'm still waiting on my library to get me one of the earlier books, where Eve and Joe obviously get together. Maybe because I missed that book is why I'd love to see Eve get with some of these other incredible men...can't help myself :) Scary to think, though, that Joe might be approaching his breaking point.

Johansen began writing after her children left home for college. She first achieved success in the early 1980s writing category romances. In 1991, Johansen began writing suspense historical romance novels, starting with the publication of The Wind Dancer. In 1996 Johansen switched genres, turning to crime fiction, with which she has had great success. She had seventeen consecutive New York Times b...more

“But now you have another problem. Keeping him from exploding like a live granade and blitzing all of us." He started walking down the hall. "I've already had a little taste of that and I'm not willing to stand for it again. I'm patient, I'm not a martyr. Fix it Eve.”
