BOLT - Ex
Francis, Dick - 25th book / 2nd Kit Fielding

In Kit Fielding's breakneck world of steeplechase racing, the ultimate catastrophe strikes: someone is shooting horses with a weapon fiendishly called a “humane killer.” Kit must stop the murdering madness, and everyone in his upper-crust circle becomes a suspect—the princely rival who's trying to woo his woman, the personal enemy bent on ruining Kit's family, the black-market arms dealer whose plans could imperil the globe. Such...more

crafting audio;

When Kit Fielding, champion steeplechase jockey, finds out that his chief patron, Princess Casilia, is facing an increasingly serious threat, he goes unhesitatingly to her aid. Neither realises that his instinctive support is the first step towards a frightening battle involving violent risk, with the honour of the princess' family as the prize and Kit's own destruction as the forfeit. Beset by other problems, not least his troubled romance with Danielle, the princess' niece, ...more

Stuck without a book at Dad's and turned to this old favorite. It's as engaging as any of Francis's older reads, perhaps because the hero is once again a jockey rather than someone on the periphery of racing. This time champion jockey Kit Fielding, first seen in the equally good Break In, holds off a ruthless French businessman determined to pressure Princess Casilia's husband into unethical business practices and investigates who is killing ...more

I always enjoy Dick Francis. His main character is a breath of fresh air. The mysteries are enjoyable and horse racing an old friend.

I started reading Dick Francis novels long ago, and haven't found one I haven't liked. All his mystery novels involve horses and horseracing in some fashion, but don't be turned off by that---it's always interestingly done. This is actually a sequel to another of his novels called Break In, which I liked. I liked Bolt, too but my one complaint about this it is that I really hated the ending. I won't give away any details, suffice it to say that the main character makes some moral choices that...more

I think this was the first Dick Francis mystery I read, and I was hooked into reading them all. He is a British ex-steeplechase jockey, so all his plots center around the horse world of racing in one form or another. They are great vacation or guilty pleasure reading! Generally quite clean, and always good twists.

I think this may have been the book with which I discovered this author. I distinctly remember the details of the "bolt" gun, and I may have first encountered it in a Readers' Digest condensed form on my parents' bookshelf... but I went back and checked it out again as a complete novel, it was that good.

bookshelves: book-candy
Dick Francis books have a lovely, candy-like quality, pleasant, easy reads, with snippets of British culture, adventure, shiny death-mystery and horse-racing, invariably. Excellent for encouraging a voracious book-reading appetite, focused on the reluctant British detective and his hesitant adventures.

Couldn't wait to get back to it everytime I had to leave. Easy to read, the hero gets himself into such a quagmire you wonder how he'll ever fix everything. Then, just when you think it's fixed, you find another pitfall that he barely avoids. One of my favorite authors.

I enjoyed reading about Kit Fielding again after Break In. There is great sadness in this book but as a sequel it puts to rest some elements from the previous story which satisfy the reader. Excellent characters - would make a great movie.

Second book where hero is Kit Fielding. The other one was Break In. He's one of my favorite Francis heroes, for some reason. Family issues and Kit's height are specific factors in these two.

Read this for the first time about 10 years ago - the first Dick Francis book I've read - and have read it several times since. Good old upstanding British racecourse justice.

Standard Dick Francis fair, read by one of the best "Dick Francis readers" Simon Prebble (the other being the late David Case) -- always a good read (and listen).

One of my favorite Dick Francis. I must say that the character Kit is extremely lovable. And he has curly hair. That's always a plus.

Loved swapping Dick Francis novels with my grandfather. Good old mystery/thriller with nothing too shocking and lots of horses.
