A powerful, well-written biography of an extraordinary man. William Wilberforce is best known for his decades-long efforts to end the British trans-Atlantic slave trade. William Hague, an experienced Parliamentarian himself who writes with an understanding of the inner workings of Parliament, surveys the life of Wilberforce. This is a great biography that gives a great deal of insight about this enigmatic man. As a politician, Hague is well placed to offer explanations and speculation about the rationale behind Pitt's decisions. The writing flows very smoothly with quotes integrated seamlessly into the piece. I came into the book with a curiosity about Pitt the Younger and came out in awe of him.

I thought this would be an interesting pass-the-time read after having finished all of Naomi Novik's books to date - but this particular biography seems, well ... as if it was not written with holding the reader's attention in mind. That probably sounds lazy on my part - but if I'm reading something that I don't have to, I want it to be entertaining and well-written.

If you want to know what it was like to run government in this era and how to fight wars by proxy then this is the book to read. An amazing man who at such a young age grasped the levers of power and used them to first build and then bankrupt the nation with the ongoing wars with France and Spain in order to uphold the growth of the British Empire.

Ooh Hague loves the wee fella. Rihgt ripping yarn and then a little warish for me. Best bit involves a crap back-packing holiday to France where PTY and friends forget their travel papers and end up bunked up in the single back-room of a provincial grocer (just before being called back to take office as First Minister).

I really enjoyed this biography(though I confess I didn't make it all the way through before I had to return it to the library). There's so much to admire in this man. There was movie made about his life a few years ago - "Amazing Grace" -well-worth watching.

I actually plan to read his newest book, William Willberforce. I guess it is so new amazon doesn't recognize it yet? It is interesting because the author is a member of parliament.
