Jonathon Burns
The Promises She Keeps is the second solo novel by Erin Healy, who broke into fiction writing by co-authoring with Ted Dekker on Kiss and Burn. Her first solo outing was titled Never Let You Go.

As would be expected by someone who worked with Ted Dekker, Healy’s novel writing bears strong elements of the spiritual thriller novel. What differentiates her writing from Dekker’s, though, is that a lot of her characterization and struggles rely on internal choices and decisions. Dekker’s books tend to

So many things I want to say...but all I can really come up with is that even though I was very interested in these characters and what was going to happen with their overlapping plots, by the end I was thoroughly annoyed with the whole thing.

I thought The Promises She Keeps would be a hard book to review, until I started reviewing it and really thinking abou the book. When I finished the book I wasn't sure how I felt about it. I knew I could not put it down and I was enthralled by the book, but at one point I was also perturbed by the book. So read on and find out what I mean. And please do read on because I need you to understand that I truly love this book even though I did have a strong dislike reaction at one point. Also, please ...more

The Promises She Keeps

Erin Healy

Summary:

The Promises She Keeps revolves around three central characters: Promise, Porta and Chase.

Promise Dayton is an aspiring young singer afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis who wants to leave her mark on this world before she dies. Promises gains some notoriety for her singing abilities, but draws more attention to herself after she survives a series of accidents that would have killed most people.

Porta is an older woman and sorceress who is obsessed with finding t

Ok, I'll say it, this is one of the most bizarre books I've ever finished. I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. It is published by Thomas Nelson which should put in in the genre of Christian fiction, but while it features a scripture quoting autistic artist and self-sacrificing love, it also features supernatural powers that don't seem to come from above. It is the story of an old woman searching for immortality in the wrong place. It features death caused by her search for life, but it ...more

Some times I think contemporary fiction is not my cuppa. This book seemed to be a little drawn out to me, like it could have wrapped up in about 200-250 pages rather than taking me 328 to get to the end.
I don't like to say mean things about books that authors work really hard to write, unless the book is totally lame. I finished this one and finally got the entire concept, I guess I could have done without the aging witch thing, as I'm not one for common day witches and all the drama that can su

This is the third or fourth Erin Healy book I've read and had it been my first I would most likely not be reading more. It took me forever to figure out what her two story lines had to do with each other and it was so bizarre I wasn't sure I was interested in continuing but I had invested enough time I hoped I would turn a corner. An autistic young man, a young woman with CF, a witch like artist and her strange son, and a promise of the supernatural power of everlasting life are the basis of thi ...more

Erin Healy spins a good story. Her beautiful writing style combined with an intriguing plot makes for a very pleasant read. Characters are well-developed and relatable. Dialogue is thoughtful and realistic. Supporting elements are woven in masterfully.

Unfortunately, the story ends rather abruptly, in my opinion. Ends are tied up quickly, so while the story ends ok, I felt it wasn't "finished." But maybe that's just me. Overall though, I'd say this book is worth reading.

I am a big Ted Dekker fan.

Promise has a terminal disease and wants so much to live her life while she can. She doesn't want regrets or could have beens..she wants to live, but not recklessly.

Enter Zack...a man that doesn't want to live, just exist or self-distruct and seems to have bad luck where ever he is in the presence of Promise. Though he is really in love with her and is doing all he can to do just the opposite.

My Rating: 3.5/5 stars!

I’ve noticed that Erin Healy’s novels are very different from most books I read. The paranormal elements she weaves into her stories are very unique. She writes characters that grab you emotionally and refuse to let go. Her plots, while very modern and relatable, always have an additional twist that makes it stand out. Her writing style is easy to follow but still extremely thought-provoking. I admire her ability to remain true to her faith and interweave it subtlety into

Reason for Reading: I am a fan of the author.

Fantastic! This is Erin Healy's best book to date. I was hooked from the first chapter and couldn't let go until I reached the end. This book revolves around three sets of characters and is more character driven than plot driven. Though the plot is a very strange and eerie tale that turns into something so much more. Ultimately the story is about love (from a Christian pov "God is love") and everlasting life. However, the book can be read by anyone as

When I received an email from Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists about review The Promises She Keeps, I was intrigued and agreed to review it. Neither the email or the back blurb prepared me for this book. First, I was expecting Christian Fiction and second I was expecting something more suspense and romance. There is some romantic love but I didn’t find it very suspenseful.

The plot revolves around Promises and how Porta quest for eternal life effects a lot of people. Some whom have never m

The story has a little bit of religion and a little of supernatural. This is a great read for fiction lovers.

A girl named Promise wants to be remembered for having a fantastic voice, she has cystic fibrosis.
Chase is an autistic artist whom loves to draw trees and he becomes attracted to Promise.
Zack is talented in taking photographs. But he has a loon for a mother, Porta.
Porta dabbles in the supernatural and promotes her art gallery.
Chase, Zack, and Porta all desire Promise but for different rea

There are certain authors that you see their name and know without a doubt that you are going to read their book. You do this because you've been on journeys with them before and you simply trust them, for the integrity of their story, characters and writing. In only a few books time Erin Healy is in that category in my mind. At the end of her books I experience that "reader's grief" that comes when the book is done and the journey was so amazing that you just weren't ready for it to be over. On ...more

Erin Healy has done it again.

THE PROMISES SHE KEEPS is a mysterious, enthralling story with diverse, sometimes leaning-over-the-edge-of-creepy characters. Due to other reading/reviewing commitments, it took me a long time to read this title, but each scene was so completely memorable that I couldn't help but be able to just pick up where I left off -- sometimes with a week and two or more other novels in between reading sessions.

What I love about Erin's writing is that she doesn't stoop to tying

I should say from the outset that I did not know this book to be a 'Christian' book when I picked it up. I probably would not have done so had I known, and that would have been sad, because it is ultimately a good read, a fascinating tale with very 3-d characters, no mean feat. Also this read was a learning experience for me, which I always appreciate. This review contains spoilers.

This book speared me through the heart. I was impressed, surprised, and actually distressed. This book is a gem o

I have had this book for over about a year. It got lost amongst my books when I moved and so I currently found it I felt I should read and finish so I could give a long overdue review. So here we go.

The Promises She Keeps is a story about a 22 year old girl named Promise, she was born with Cystic Fibrosis, she longs to be a famous singer so that she doesn't just fade away once she is gone. She decides to help out a student with an art piece, Zack, which ends with her death defying fall from a cl

The Promises She Keeps is a deeply compelling story about love and the decisions we make about what we do with the time we have in this life. The back of the book almost makes it sound like a romance, but instead the novel delves into the power of love as a whole, and what it means for our society. The novel tells the story of a young woman with cystic fibrosis, and the people who influence her in her quest to be eternally remembered after she dies.

The book is very suspenseful, and I liked the m

I thought I wrote this review. This was an unexpected delight filled with a little of the supernatural and keeping the message of Christ, sort of. It is published by Thomas Nelson which I didn't realize until I started reading it.

It tells the story of 3 people, Promise, Chase and Zack. Promise is facing death as she struggles with Cystic Fibrosis. She wants to become famous because she would be able to live on after her demise. Zack doesn't really know what he wants and with a mother like Porta

When I saw all of the reviews on this book, I thought I was in for a thrilling, captavating story that would keep me turning the pages. While I did read it within 2 days, I only kept turning the pages to be done with the book.

The book is told from multiple perspectives. There is Promise, a Cystic Fibrosis patient, who has a mission of leaving behind a legacy for herself through fame and her name in lights. Chase, a young adult, who has a fascination with trees and drawing, living with his twin s

The Promises She Keeps was a very unique story and caught my attention nearly from the get-go. It was written by Erin Healy, which was one of the reasons I wanted to read it. Healy is the editor of one of my favorite authors - Ted Dekker - and also has co-authored several books with him. I was hoping to find her writing just as gripping and action filled as Dekkers, and must admit I was let down a little. The book was still great, but it wasn't to be compared with Dekkers. But that is not a down ...more

wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started reading “The Promises She Keeps” by Erin Healy. It is the first of Healy’s books that I have read and I was not disappointed.
A Christian suspense, the book is about the age-old battle of good and evil, life and death, the meaning of love and the sacrifices made for love ones.

I thought this was a good story. I wish I could give it a 3.5, but alas, no.

I found the characters to be likeable and believable in their crises. It's not the most earth shattreing life altering book you're ever going to read but there is enough suspense and curiosity to keep you reading. There was a bit of a slow spot about 3/4 of the way through and you just sort of feel like the main character, Promise, should stinkin' get over it. This was one of those books that was slow to make sense. It was hard to get into and then I wasn't quite sure I knew exactly where it was going - or agreed with it. There were some shining moments and well drawn characters... but I always feel the true test of a book is if I get so caught up in it that I believe in the characters and the story as if they were real people and events. I never got there with this one.

The first problem was the premise that Promise - who is sick with Cystic Fibrosis
