The concepts, at least what I was able to read, in this book make sense. But I'm just getting tired of it. I've tried two times to read it. It's always due back at the library and there are other books that are more pressing or interesting to finish before it.
I like any books that talk about healthy ways of eating and living. But I really don't like books (particularly ones on food and diet) that give you the suggested shopping list and recipes. I can't afford 3/4 of the stuff they recommend...more

Anyone who wants to eat well
Though the title of this book is "YOU on a Diet" - this book is not really a "diet" book, as in how to lose weight fast ... it is more of a "lifestyle change" book. The premise of the book is this: if you truly understand how your body works, you will be more motivated to eat healthy and exercise. This lifestyle change will enable you to find your body's optimal weight, and make weight loss more permanent as you develop consistent eating and exercise habits.

I love Dr Oz the co- author of this book. For me the book isn't so much about diet. Actually it's not about being on any type of diet. What the book is about are the fundamentals of what goes on in the anatomy of the body. To read about the wonders of the human body is fascinating to me.. He is very specific in how the body takes in food and breaks down food. I like reading about what happens, why it happens, and how it happens that the food you choose effects eveything that can happen to your ...more

I saw a show on Oprah where Drs Oz & Roizon helped a chunky, tired middle-aged woman lose weight, tone up and eventually look really hot. I bought this book hoping it would motivate me to do the same. Somehow, I still have the same 20 pounds to lose.
The cutesy style with lots of puns and silly drawings gets annoying after awhile, but it has lots of good, solid advice on how to lose weight and live a healthier life. Someday, I intend to follow it.

This book was trying so hard to be common person friendly in explaining it's science, that it made it harder to understand. There were too many metaphors and wasted dumb jokes that I was forced to read while trying to mine out the real information.

I thought this was sensible and even somewhat entertaining. Haven't tried any of the exercises or recipes, though.
I didn't know that (according to many peer-reviewed studies) it's waist size and not total weight that has the greatest effect on mortality rate. I thought that "waist management" was just a cutesy title.
The authors are both doctors, and apparently they got through medical school by using mnemonic devices, because this book has about 50 of them.

I am no scientist.
I never really understood science or math for that matter.
Since making a major lifestyle change almost one year ago. I was curious about how my body looses weight and why people eat. This book answered my questions. I finally get it. If only Dr. Oz was my science teacher, perhaps I would have been a dietician.

This book makes healthy eating/exercise approachable for real people -- you know, the kind who have full time jobs, families to feed, no money for personal trainers, and primary care physicians whose time is limited to reporting bad news instead of inspiring good behavior. I started off in college as a biology major... I got the basics down before the prospects of taking more chemistry classes returned me to my senses and I ran, screaming for the English department.
BUT, this book spoke to my sciencey roots and I loved learning the whys and hows about my body and its systems and why my being fat has a lot more to do with my brain and my small intestine than it has to do with my stomach or my appetite.

Good information and easy to understand. One of the authors is Dr. Oz, Oprah's favorite medical guest, and I often think I should just give up and do everything Oprah says anyway, like Liz Lemon. But reading this book, with its YOU-reka moments (get it? YOU on a diet? Eureka?), cutesy illustrations, and dumbed-down text, makes me want to put on a tweed coat, perch my glasses on the end of my nose, and look over them while saying things like, "Well I have a graduate degree and ...more

You: On A Diet attracted me because I was feeling desperate to lose weight and didn't know what to do anymore. I sat down and read it the same evening that I bought it and was impressed by how simple the plan was. I also really enjoyed all the science behind the details and that made it feel much more doable because of the information.

I appreciated this fresh approach to dieting. rather than just receive a laundry list of instructions or "dont's of dieting", the authors spent the first half of the book explaining the biology of hunger, satiety, nutrition, why high fructose corn syrup is evil, etc. And i swear even those without the bachelor's degree in bio could really get a good grasp on the material. Then it gets into meal guides, excercise suggestions and so on. It even gives you a shopping list to start out. ...more

This was a book club book. Kind of slow, read kind of like a text book, but interesteding nonetheless. I learned a lot about why junk food is terrible for our bodies.

I have finished most of the book, minus the appendices, which I plan to read because I know someone who is thinking seriously about gastric bypass surgery, and I'd like to get the authors' take on this controversial procedure. I loved the way this book went into the scientific aspects of diet, metabolism, fitness, etc. This is all information that we all should learn very early on in our lives, especially since we're so inundated by unhealthy pseudo-foods and our lifestyles discourage us from ...more

This was an audio book for me.
I found this book wasn't actually a "diet" book. It gave a couple of diet "You Tips" but mostly it gave the physiology of what fat in the body does to the body. I found it terribly interesting.
As a closet biology nerd I found the explanations fascinating. The waring organs and hormones, the contradictory body functions, all of it explains how losing and keeping weight off is such a chore.
I did get a bit tired of all the metaphors but...more

This is the partner book that goes along with "You: The Owner's Manual", but talks specifically about what people should be eating and how they should be exercising. It also says that we should be paying more attention to our waist circumference rather than the number on the scale. It is a pretty good book so far and has some good guidlines about healthy eating and moderate exercise. Nothing revolutionary, but it's not a hoax crash-diet kind of thing either. It's about being healthy...more

I have really gotten a LOT out of this book. It's kind of textbooky, but in an interesting and somewhat entertaining kind of way. I've learned and retained more information about the process of digestion, food metabolism and the consequences of food choices from this book than the university course I took on the same subjects.
