Last October, I participated in the Blog Tour for Vampyre Kisses. I had not yet read the book but I’m happy to help promote new authors. The book definitely sparked my interest due to the Irish lore and well, Irish vampires, of course! Also, Salt Whip is a kick ass term for a witch killer. If Elizabeth came up with that one on her own, kudos!

The characters are likeable in the story. Faith is so easy going and sweet. She stood up for others and did not want anyone getting hurt or killed over her. A compassionate, loving soul who took her new identity seriously. Morgan was a great character. One of the oldest vampires in the story, she is quite lethal, yet she was very motherly and protective of Faith. She was also the prophet for the ancient vampire god, Kane. Mega cool. Akilah was an interesting character and my favorite. He was charged with teaching new witches their craft. I loved his personality and how he didn’t put up with shit and pushed Faith. He reminded me of Pei Mei from Kill Bill. :) *snicker*

One of the smaller but equally important characters, Oran, stole my heart. I won’t describe him because I would hate to ruin his awesomeness for you. I definitely loved that Elizabeth wrote him into the story as often as she did. I adored him. He is full of WIN.

There are some things I did not particularly like about the book, however. The books switches POVs, which I have no problem with. However, one scene is seen through Faith’s eyes, and then we again see it through Trent’s eyes. This happened only once, in the beginning, and it felt odd. I was glad it wasn’t that way throughout.

Sadly, I did not feel the connection between Faith and Trent. It all happened to quickly for me, and while this has occurred in other books, their romance just didn’t seem real. I enjoyed them together, but the whole “I love you” bit was odd and unnatural to me. I was also sad that Ireland didn’t come into play until the story is about 75% finished, and it is where the big showdown occurs, so not much of Ireland is seen or spoken about. *sniff* Sequel, maybe…?

All in all, I enjoyed the story and the characters. The camaraderie amongst the characters was nice. The mixture of vampires, weres and witches was done well, and I enjoyed the adventure and struggles Faith and team experienced(less)

It's been a while for me since my last book about witches and, so far, I think this is one of the bests. At the beginning of the story we have Faith, an average girl that was actually, quite bored of her life. A while ago she had lost her dad and, for some reason her mother seems to dislike her a lot (such a mother material here...). On top of that her job as a secretary is rather boring and the only light in her life is Mac, her best friend and old lover.

No, really, read it. Elizabeth created a really good story, strong characters and wonderful creatures, like Oran. I think he is the pet every person would love to have... I'm a huge fan of cats, you see, and Oran is a volucris, a creature that in it's small size looks like a kitty with tiny wings that he hides in his fur and, in his real form he looks more like a leopard with huge Pegasus wings. Who wouldn't want a pet/friend like that?!

Of course we also have the "love triangle" between Faith, Trent and Zou Tai, a werewolf prince and almost Faith's killer.
Think of Trent as a serious, handsome, caring and strong protector (although he can make good jokes) and then Zou Tai -his family originates from Thailand- who is more like a funny, hot and sweet friend. I can't choose a team, they are both great in their own way.

I like vampires, I like werewolves and I like witches a lot and this book mixes all of them in a pleasant way. Think of it, if you discover you are the last witch and your new best friends are all from the supernatural world, wouldn't you be happy? Plus, there is a war coming and Faith is the only one that can save them all. And by "all" I mean all the vampires and werewolves out there.

“Vampyre Kisses” is a new book from brand new author Elizabeth J. Kolodziej. Yes, Faith is a human girl with a destiny, but she is also a witch, the last of her kind. Trent is a vampire, but he is not your average brooding Baranbas, Angel or Edward. He has a destiny as well and if anything he is just anxious about it. Fate has thrown these two together and together they hold the fate of the supernatural creatures of Kolodziej’s world. Not related to anything, but I kept imagining Faith looking like Fiona Apple. Nothing in the text lead me to that, just the first woman that came to mind.

Yes. There are things in this book we have seen before, not just creatures but plots and circumstances. The difference here, and it’s the difference that makes the book worth getting, is that Kolodziej’s world is very rich and detailed (sometimes too detailed, but I’ll get to that). No Trent is not a Sparkler, he is a vampire, but he is cut from the modern cloth of vampires and more to the point he wants to be more. Faith could have been just another vapid little Gothamite doing 9-5 and partying, but she knows early on there is more going on than just that. In lesser hands these characters would have been annoying characters, or rather caricatures, but thankfully they get much more interesting as the tale weaves on. It is told from the point of view, alternately of both Faith and Trent. Kolodziej does a great job of giving us the proper voice for each character and it is rather easy to hear that voice in your head. There are complications galore including a romantic rival in the form of a werewolf.

A minor criticism, in the beginning of the tale Kolodziej has so much to tell us that she tends to over tell it. I see this as exactly what it is; she was very excited to tell her tale, had all these ideas and wanted to get them out on to the page as fast as she could. It did slow down as the story progressed and a good rhythm was established. Though every once in a while we are hit with a lot of information. While I am calling this a “minor criticism” it is also part of the book’s charm. The author has so much to say and has built up the myths of her world that she just seems excited to tell it all to us. That’s what future books are for.

The book does read like the first book of so many authors, so the pacing is odd at times and there are odd word choices here and there, but that is all something that will work out. Once the pace though is set and the story begins in earnest then you want to keep going and learning more. The book reminds me a bit of the first “Anita Blake” book.

The mythology of this book is well thought out and great care is given to it. Kolodziej is building a world here, not just a novel. I bet if you asked her she could tell you 10 generations of Faith’s ancestors, names and all. Even if she can’t, the book feels like she could.

Admittedly I am not the target audience for this sort of tale. I prefer my vampires darker, my witches more mysterious and werewolves as ravaging beasts. That all being said there is a good tale here and an interesting set of myths. This could very well be the start of a new series of modern supernatural novels that everyone will be talking about, and if not it is also an enjoyable read and in the end isn’t what we want? Kolodziej shares her world with us and we all enjoy it.

I am pleased to hear there is a second book coming. She has built up a lot mythology here and there is plenty for a lot of books.(less)

This book gets 2 gnomes and a gnome hat out of 5 gnomes for having great characters but a plot that is just all over the place.

The prologue is entertaining because it puts forth an interesting mythology about witches and introduces the reader to Circe a goddess who many people will know from having read The Odyssey by Homer in high school.

I read this book during a vampire/paranormal book marathon over the holidays. It was an enjoyable fast read. Vampyre Kisses took me by surprise. I was expecting the typical tale of forbidden love between a mortal and a vampire (Thanks a whole lot, Twilight, for bringing that flood upon us). This was a very interesting story. I was immediately hooked once I started it. I didn't want to put it down. Each chapter left me hanging and wanting more. Vampyre Kisses was beautifully written. Faith gave up on all her hopes and dreams after her father died. In one day, that all changes. She learned that there is another world out there besides the safe one she was living in. It is filled with supernatural beings: werewolves, vampires and witches. Two important gems were stolen which could cause huge destruction if they are not found in a year. While learning her powers and tracking the slayers, Faith grows and becomes a very strong witch. Will she be strong enough to aide the vampires and werewolves in the war? Will Faith trust herself to follow her destiny?

I don't think there was character in this book I didn't like besides the evil ones. I always dislike them. They get what is coming to them though. The characters is what makes a story interesting for me, and I loved every single one of them. I loved Mac. I knew there was something special about him, I just didn't know what. I loved their friendship and how he was always there for her. I also loved Morgan. She is the mother that Faith never had. No matter what, she has always been there for Faith. Gordan and Akilah were hilarious. There aren't too many scenes with them, but they really grew on me. They were so hilarious!!! I don't know how I feel about Zou Tai yet. He really annoyed me at parts in this book.

I really loved Faith as a character. She was just one of those characters that you felt for. Faith loved and cared about everyone around her and even helped those that attacked her. Although appearing vulnerable and fragile on the outside, she was very strong and determined. She had to make some very tough choices that I don't know if I could have made or done. Protecting those around her was her top priority. She was always protected though. Even though she got a vampyre kiss at a young age, she was still able to get hurt. Vampyre kisses only let the vampires bite if permission is granted.

I adored Trent. He was so sweet and very protective of Faith. Trent has longed to find love for a long time. He never thought he would find it though. Faith makes me him feel alive. Feelings start surfacing in him that he never experienced before. It is believed that vampires do not feel so he need for her grows each day.

My favorite little being in the book was Oran. He is a volucris. It is a shape-shifting flying cat. It is so small and tiny, but when Faith is in need it shifts into a huge beautiful creature. I would love to have one of those!!!

This book had a lot of shocks and surprises that left my speechless. I also loved that the book was very action packed. The ending left me wanting more so I can't wait to read the sequel Werewolf Descent!!!

This book creates a slightly different take on the vampire world. I quickly got into it but then I was a little overwhelmed with all the different aspects of it. It confused me and I struggled to keep it all straight. There were so many things going on including vampires, werewolves, witches, slayers, hunters, salt whips, guardians, shape shifters, and magical creatures. With each of those came one or more characters. I felt like I couldn’t keep up. Along with this, I frequently had to stop and reread pages. I don’t know if I was just overwhelmed with all of it or if I was just missing things but I would find myself trying to understand how something just happened.

When Faith meets Trent, I was very interested in him. The reaction between the two was quick and intense. He had some mystery about him that I was interested in learning about. There was this instant devotion between the two that I wanted to grow. I was disappointed in the time that they got to be together before things fell apart. I guess the timing of the book was off to me. Things I thought should last longer didn’t and things I wanted to end quickly went on. Anyway, their relationship was just odd almost scattered to me.

There were questions I had at the end that weren’t answered. Or rather there were plot points that I wish had been explored. One was the Vampyre Kiss. I loved this part of the story. It is unique and has such potential but it only came up for one short scene. That disappointed me. Another was the blood binding. I loved how this brought Trent and Faith together but I wished there had been more of it. I have to include the ending to this list as well. It happened too fast and too easy. I would have loved to see more details and maybe a few more setbacks.

Faith grows though this book into a strong, “I can take care of myself” kind of witch. I like that and I’m interested in finding out what’s next for her. I guess I just wish her story could have been less confusing and stronger. You may feel different. Others have. (less)

I don't know about ya'll, but when I read a vampire/werewolf story I automatically begin comparing it to the Twilight series. Sorry fantasy authors ... blame Stephanie Meyers' success for this happening ... Vampyre Kisses was not immune to my comparisons.

Really enjoyable storyline, with some nice twists and turns. I liked how the book was written from several viewpoints and it was labeled by chapter who's viewpoint it was. I found only one chapter to be a bit more repetitive than need be, but other than that, the split viewpoints were affective and added some extra interest. The cover is adequate, it gives the night time scene over the roofs of the buildings. The thing that grabs my attention and I would say attracts me to it is the beautiful red rose with blood dripping from it. The book begins at a slow to medium pace, in some parts I was kind of feeling "come on get on with it" then about a third of the way in the pace pics up and become faster with a deeper plot that totally hooks you in. The main character, Faith is a good hearted person who seems to always try and see the good in people even when they are somewhat nasty to her. Faith has this sort of feeling that there is more for her to do in life....that she can be more than who/what she is at the moment. Wow that is so true as the book goes on faith learns she a witch, a very important witch as she is the last one alive who has a serious job to undertake. Faith is to be the one to "give faith" to those who will join her on the task to find some missing gems. The gems are extremely important as one belongs to the werewolves and the other belongs to the vampires. The two races are not used to working together for a common goal. So Faith does have a difficult task thrust upon her. She also need training into becoming a witch to her full "witchy" potential. The book has mystery, adventure, lots of action and of course some love. I enjoyed the revealing of what Faith's "birthmark", which is in fact a Vampyre Kiss, and who gave it to her and why. I also like the relationship between Faith and Morgan, it is so well described the small gestures towards each other. Elizabeth really writes that so well. I hope to read more about Morgan and Faith in the future as well as more mentions of Faith's father even though he is dead.
I really loved one of the more minor characters, the flamboyant Gordon, whom is a "fortune teller" He see's the future of what is most likely to happen. He sees the "war" ahead, and he see's Faith fighting someone very close to her......Can Faith put emotions aside?
The ending of the book does set the scene of the next book as Circe the goddess of witches wishes Faith to find a love she can procreate and continue the witch line with, but how is that to happen as Faith and Trent are so in love and determined to be together... The fates have their own special ways of working so we will have to see what they have in store and if and when the witch line will continue.
So did I enjoy the book? Once I got into the book after about the first third yes I was super hooked in. The first third is not bad in anyway, I just wanted to read it faster than I could if that makes sense? Would I recommend? Yes It has Werewolves, Shapeshifters and of course Vampires, so if you love books with these in you'll love this. It is the beginning, lead into to a potentially great series. Would I read more of this series? Oh yes please i need to know what happens next...and if the witch line will continue.... Would I read more by Elizabeth Kolodziej? Yes I would.(less)

I got this book yesterday and I started it today. Already love the beginning!

I finished this book on Nov 12th. It was a great book. I love the world that Elizabeth created. What a wonderful mix of all paranormal beings that we love so much. I love that Faith, the lead character, jummps right into the knowledge of the paranormal world around her. I would personally do the same thing and therefore love her even more for this. From the title, I can directly guess there will be vampire in this book.I thought it would give me a same legend with what I have got in some book with same genre. But I was wrong. Vampyre Kisses is the debut novel from Elizabeth Kolodziej. This book was epic on multiple levels. What can I say, words escape me. The characters, the plot, the intensity, the dynamic scenes, just everything about this book will hold your attention which is important to me. From beginning to end I was just lost in the characters and their moments. It's different, it's fast going, and it left me demanding more!
This story is told from alternating points of view, Faith and Trent. There was also from Morgan and one from the sight unseen. I actually do not mind this because it lets us know what is happening or inside knowledge from more than one character.
The main character we follow is Faith, a fragile, independent woman who lives in New York and works as a secretary. Nothing was interesting in her life. One night she agrees to go to the Club X with her ex boyfriend or best friend Mac Edmunds and there she meets the alluring Trent who is about to turn her world inside out, but little does she knows is that he is a vampire.
Trent is a vampire with a conscience, who feels a bit like a monster, even if he does appreciate the vampire life. He doesn't want to force anyone into the life he leads and he doesn't like to, but he secretly hopes that one day he will find love and someone who will love him in return, even if he is a monster. When he meets Faith, he is so intrigued by her that he can not simply walk away from her, no matter how much his friends and maker might try to convince him that he should.
When they start hanging out together, odd things start happening: she is attacked in the park, and Trent knows he must come clean with her. The next thing she knows the master vampire and the werewolf royals are in her living room. It seems that the vampires blood gem and the werewolves moon gem have been stolen. Almost everything happens at the same time when, not only does she find out that she is the last witch in existence, but that her mother is a slayer and wants to kill the vampires, werewolves, and even Faith! Faith must train to hone her skills in preparation for the battle to get the gems back from the past master vampire, the past werewolf king, and Faiths mother.
The characters really drew me in and made me want to know what was going to happen and how would they make it through. This book comes highly recommended so go check it out!!(less)

Vampyre Kisses is an ambitious first novel, epic in scope and complex in its world-building—and while it succeeds on some fronts, it falls short on others.

One of the novel’s strongest points is its highly detailed world-building, which combines contemporary vampire, werewolf, and witch lore with older myths such as Circe and ancient gods. As a matter of fact, my favourite character was Oran the volucris, a shape-shifting flying cat who can grow from the size of a kitten with wings to a giant leopard you can fly on. On top of that, not only were all supernatural factions represented, but their respective nemeses as well: slayers, hunters, and Salt Whips. Kolodziej has clearly put a lot of thought and research into the setting—perhaps even to her own detriment, as occasionally certain facts and myths were discussed despite having no bearing on the plot.

Not only is the world-building complex, but the plot covers a vast scope as well: throughout the course of the novel Faith discovers the supernatural, realizes she is the last witch alive, falls in love with Trent, trains and grows into her powers, and recovers the stolen gems in a major final battle. That is a lot of ground to cover in a 200+ page novel, and I feel the characterization suffered as a result — so much happens that we don’t have the time to get to know the characters.

Faith’s progression from weak ‘normal’ human to capable witch comes about rather suddenly, Faith and Trent’s relationship for the most part skips the delicious uncertain stage and jumps right to the honeymoon, and even the initial reveal comes too quickly—for someone with no knowledge of the supernatural world, Faith is far too observant of Trent’s ‘otherness’ for it to be believable (e.g. thinking he is “too pale even for the city” where a normal person would rationalize his paleness).

Also hurting the characterization were the numerous one-dimensional background characters, amongst which the villains, and the werewolf and vampire extras. It doesn’t help that many of the names used were lacking in originality—other than the protagonists, there was Mr Zack Zanwick (Faith’s boss), and even a club called Club X.

As for the writing, like with many debuts, Vampyre Kisses reads very much like a first novel, complete with purple prose of the Twilight variety. A distinguishing factor is that the chapters alternate between Faith’s and Trent’s first person point of view, which gives the reader some interesting insight, although the style is not always consistent: the one-off chapter from Morgan’s point of view and the last three chapters in third person were a little jarring.

Furthermore, while I enjoyed the switching point of view between Faith and Trent, the several repeated scenes (first from Faith’s point of view, then from Trent’s) were a little tedious—the tactic worked well initially, but lost its efficacy with subsequent repetitions.

Overall, Kolodziej has some talent, but it’s still rather raw and underdeveloped. Vampyre Kisses would be a much stronger piece if it were made more cohesive and — most importantly – tighter. Streamlined. Kolodziej has some wonderful ideas which lose their power in the execution, but as this is the first in a series I can only hope Kolodziej will continue to improve and give readers the chance to fall in love with her characters.(less)

Elizabeth's first novel was really interesting for me. It involved werewolves, shifters, witches, vampires, gods, and slayers! It was an intriguing mix that worked well together.

The author managed to mix folklore and legend into a modern story that still encompassed the history of supernaturals. I actually learned a few things that I was not familiar with!

When she goes out to a club with her ex turned best friend, Mac, Faith meets a man named Trent who is about to turn her world inside out. Trent is a vampire with a conscience. He doesn't want to force anyone into the life he leads and he doesn't like to kill anyone. Trent feels a bit like a monster, even if he does appreciate the vampire life. But he secretly hopes to one day find love and someone who will love him in return, even if he is a monster. When he meets Faith, he is so intrigued by her that he can not simply walk away from her, no matter how much his friends and maker might try to convince him that he should. Trent can sense that there is something different about her even if he doesn't know what it is. Meeting Trent is the catalyst that sends Faith on an epic journey, over the course of which, she learns many things about herself, her dearly departed father and her off-putting mother. This book was a fun read that really hooked me after I got going. It was hard to step away from because the action was so fast and furious. The characters really drew me in and made me want to know what was going to happen and how would they make it through. I love Faith and Trent together. Their love and friendship was heart warming and sweet. I also love the other supporting characters like Morgan, Mac and ZT. Faith is lucky to have such a great group of friends! This book comes highly recommended so go check it out!!

I really tried to like this book. Sadly it didn't work for me. There were many fragmented sentences and the dialogue (when there was dialogue) was not believable. Aside from that, the book is fragmented between the two main characters: Trent (the vamp) and Faith (the girl). This would work exceptionally well if done correctly.
