A little disappointing, partly because the title just doesn't suit the book. Sounds like a kind of funny version of an alien invasion, right? Wrong. It ends up having a fairly serious tone, with a few lighter touches to keep it from getting too morbid. I don't have a problem with the tone, but the title needed to be changed to suit it.

But once I adjusted my expectations, it was decidedly not terrible. It has a definite whiff of summer blockbuster about it. The sort of thing that makes good mone

Why I read this: When I first heard of the book, I laughed my butt off. I love the book description and was excited to do a tour with Teen Book Scene for this book.

Plot: I have to say, I didn't think this book would be as serious as it was. Yes, it had humorous moments, but definitely a serious plot line - so serious that lots of people and aliens did die. It was interesting seeing the progression of what happened after the quickest invasion of a world ever. You follow the character Jesse, who s

Update: I did not realize I would be receiving an "uncorrected proof" of this book. That said, it was cleaner by far than many of the final copies I've purchased lately! I encountered three or four errors in spelling or a missing word or two. Not a lot to deal with. Impressive these days!

On to the book: I was originally attracted to the book because of the title. However, after reading it I don't feel the title fits very well. The title, to me, implied a light-hearted YA science fiction romp. Wi

I was surprised by this book--I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did. This book is very fast paced; not suspenseful, but the author doesn't spend a lot of time on description. The novel starts with the action: Earth is invaded, and taken over, by aliens. Boom. Done. Moving on.

The plot was rather basic, but enjoyable. I liked how Yansky was able to compare the alien colonization to the colonization of the America's without being preachy.

I wished that the author had gone deeper into the char

This book may be suffering from false advertising: from the title and blurbs, I certainly started reading it because I thought it would be a "fun joyride," as promised. It was not. It was actually much more, very moving and thought-provoking. I can tell why the publishers wanted to lure readers in with promises of wacky hijinks--and maybe there are people who find global genocide humorous--but I did very little laughing. Which is not to say it's completely somber and depressing. There's enough l ...more

It should be clear that you are weak and we are strong. You are now our slave, unless you are unable to be a slave, in which case you are dead. We are sorry for your loss. This is a most excellent planet. Lovely blue sky. Most excellent green vegetation. We are going to like it here. Thank you for not completely destroying it.

The Sanginians are the greatest beings in the known universe, as they are quick to let everyone know, and they just spent the last ten seconds conquering Earth. That's all

No one is prepared for the day alien invaders arrive, which is probably partially why they manage to take over in ten seconds. Jesse is one of the few---lucky? unlucky?---enough to be spared to work as a slave for the conquerors. But as the aliens work on getting Earth ready to be colonized, Jesse and a few other survivors are determined to take their lives back.

I saw the title and read the blurbs and thought this would be a pretty funny read. I finished the book really annoyed and feeling like

Book 46 for 2010. I loved this one. My first thought was that it would be a humorous book (based on the title), but though it did have some laugh-out-loud moments, it's a serious sci-fi story with great character development. Highly recommended for boys and girls, fans of sci-fi and fantasy, seventh grade and up.

I enjoyed it, the book was a quick read. It was also easy to read, and written a lot like how I write. There were places were he was paying great attention to detail and character development and suddenly just moved the story along like he didn't know what else to write about in those moments. The book could've been longer, but I'm not sure if that would've made it better or worse. I think there is a sequel and will be looking to reading it. One thing the book made me feel was that the author ha ...more

Every once in a while a novel comes along and you read it and you think holy crap, why didn’t I think of that?

I wasn’t even through Chapter One of Brian Yansky‘s latest, ALIEN INVASION & OTHER INCONVENIENCES when I started to feel this way. Oh, the plot envy. It can be soul-sucking.

But of course this novel was so good — so very, very good — that the plot envy was overcome. And I just wanted to hug and squeeze this book and tell all my friends about it and show my cats who just sort of stared

Very basic plotline, with not much intricate detail. Mostly, Alien Invasion is just a cake without the frosting and decorations. You can still eat a plain cake, but it's obvious that some of the flavor is gone. Okay, so that was probably not the best comparison, but that's what i thought of after finishing this book. What I'm really trying to say is that I felt that the author could have elaborated on some of the details. It's not always bad to over-dramatize everything, and that was something t ...more

This book takes a concept that has been done before - aliens taking over the world - and presents it in a different light.

Jessie is your average high school student with only the average worries any teenager has. But that all changes the day the aliens force, Sanginians, take over the world and turns all of the surviving humans into slaves.

The Sanginians are an alien force that use their massive mind power to not only communicate with each other but to also conquer other "less civilized" life-

I had never read a book about alien invasions or anything like that so I didn't really know what to expect. Having said this, it was a really good book!

Jesse is in class when everything changes in 10 seconds. His classmates and mostly everyone has fallen asleep, or what looks like it. Soon he is working for the aliens that have taken over the world along with those who survived. He makes friends and they all know they must leave that place if they want to survive.

Jesse was a fun character. He

Sandra’s Sentiments: I thought the book was excellent. Not only is it well written, it is also loaded with quirky humor that makes you crave more! I love Jesse (the protagonist), and I totally dig his relationship with his father. Jesse’s mother was an English teacher, which helps keep profanity to a minimal – it fact, it adds to the overall humor of the book because Jesse comes up with ‘proper ways’ of swearing that tickle your funny bone.

There’s definitely romance (which I love to read about!)

The second half of this book, where the action is, read like a short story written for a sci fi magazine; as something disposable, hastily written, and pressed for space. I'm not much for long, drawn out battle scenes, but even I think a fight to the death with a big baddie should last more than one paragraph. It's as if the author just wanted to get this part of the story over with so he could wrap it up.

It seems from the first half, as the story quickly takes root of an invasion by colonizing

Jesse is having the worst day of his life. It took less time for the aliens to conquer Earth than it does for you to brush your teeth.

Unfortunately, he can pick up on what the aliens say in his mind. This makes him a "superior," "hearing" product who is forced to work in the house of Lord Vetrenomous (the conquering alien lord) doing physical tasks to get the place ready for more aliens.

Longing for escape, he makes friends with some people who want the same

This book had a very weird vibe about it that was at terrible odds with the fun-time, zany impression I got from reading the title and little blurbs on the cover. For example, the title, 'Alien Invasion and Other Inconveniences,' sounds rather lighthearted and humorous. Not to mention several of the blurbs, one of which says, "The total conquest of humanity has never been so entertaining." However, nearly every living creature- man, woman, child, and animal- on the face of the earth was killed o ...more

At first, I thought - "Oh, no. This is going to be very middle school." But it wasn't. Jesse is in his teens when an Alien race invades and conquers Earth in "less time than it takes me to brush my teeth." It was ten seconds. And what Jesse soon comes to realize is that most of the population does not survive; those who remain alive are mostly in their teens and twenties. They are referred to as, "product" which equates to slave. Jesse discovers that he is able to read minds; he can hear Alien's ...more

Jesse and a few others are gathered up and discover that they are considered “product” and destined to be slaves for the alien invaders. I needed a "palate cleanser" after a bunch of YA paranormal romance type stuff. And this "alien" book fit the bill.
After aliens come and take over the earth in 2 seconds, the humans - products are what they are called - who survived are taken as slaves in the new regime led by a little green dude called Lord Vert.
The survivors start accessing their latent psychic abilities and fighting back.
The premise is good, the writing is solid and characters are pretty w

Wow...this was a majorly quick read, but good nonetheless! It took all of about 2 days with multiple interuptions along the way and believe me, you won't want their to be anything standing between you and the end of this book. It's one of the only "alien" novels I've read thus far but I found the author's storyline rather intriguing. It's written with a combination of narratives by Jesse, our lead character, and journal entries from the intimating Lord Vert...well at least that's what the Jesse ...more

3.5 stars. I wasn't sure how I would like this book because I'm not a huge sci-fi reader. However, this book was very good! The storyline was interesting and the character's likable and often quite funny. Earth gets taken over in ten seconds with few survivors (well, when compared with the world population). Jesse is the only person from his entire school that doesn't just "fall asleep." Interesting, modern take on slavery and view of what we have done to our world w

It's rather fast paced and I felt as though the characters didn't at all develop. And I found it sort of amusing how when the main character's best friend died he didn't think anything about it until two or three chapters later. But It wasn't a bad read. It had some funny parts and was a nice short read.
